  1. How bad will it be? on KPNQWest Admins Keep Bankrupt Network Running · · Score: 1

I thought the Internet routed around damage?

I'm sure I read somewhere that during the Gulf War the Allies had problems trying to disrupt Iraqi communications as the Iraqis were using a TCP/IP-based network similar in configuration to the Internet.

If the plug is eventually pulled on the KPNQWest network how drastic will the effect be?

  2. Re:Is this necessary? on Linux Development Kernel 2.5.18 Released · · Score: 1

I don't see any harm in /. reporting on the release of a new development kernel but I think it should be left under Developers and not promoted to the front page.

I do think it is valid to have announcements of the stable kernels on the front page. I'd also like to see those stories take on a standard form, e.g.

    Linux 2.4.x Released
The latest Linux kernel, 2.4.x, was released today. Changes include {summary} and the changelog can be found here (URL). A list of mirror sites can be found here (URL). Please download the patches to conserve bandwidth.

Why are RR chnaging the Organization reference? What do they hope to achieve? The article hints at advertising but how many newsreaders display this line by default and how many people actually display full headers when reading their mail? And how many people would switch providers just because it was mentioned in an e-mail header?

  9. Re:What is it with books?? on FCC Pushes Digital TV and Digital Restrictions · · Score: 1

Books inspire and encourage your imagination. An author can describe a scene in so much detail, but your mind fleshs out the rest.

For example, take Lord of the Rings. Anyone who has read the book will have their own ideas about how they imagine Middle Earth and the characters look like. Now take the recent film of LotR. That is Peter Jackson's interpretation of the characters. Anyone who reads the book after seeing the film will, more than likely in their mind's eye, envisage the characters and scenery as per the film.

  10. Re:Same in UK on FCC Pushes Digital TV and Digital Restrictions · · Score: 1

Not quite right there. If you can prove to the TV licencing authorithy that the TV is only being used in the capacity of a monitor and is not connected to a means of receiving broadcasts (aerial, Sky box, cable box, have the tuner disabled) then you do not need to pay for the TV licence.
Basically, the TV licence is a licence to receive broadcasts.

See that middle number of the kernel version? Note that it is of the form 2n-1 where n>0, otherwise known as an odd number. Now, in the Linux world this means that it is a development kernel. D-E-V-E-L-O-P-M-E-N-T. In other words, extreme beta.

So, unless you wish to contribute to the kernel development or want a range of unknown problems, stick with the even middle-numbered kernels.
