I'd hate to see them take one of those expediencies to get the job done
I wouldn't. Who cares if new releases still work on Alpha? If that slows down the other 99% of the world then drop it, and leave it to a specialized subproject to deal with. The three people who care can work on it.
Yeah I have to question that. "Huge impact on overall education"? That would be the teacher really. Schools should provide good access to computers with fast internet for students to use (esp. those without home PCs), and teach kids how to use the computers, but "computers for every student" is a questionable goal on its own.
It's not like you're taking life away. You're just not creating more kids. There's no shortage of children on this Earth in case you haven't noticed. By your logic, we should all be "giving someone else the chance to live" and having children as fast as possible.
It's more useful to humanity, if you want to think that way, to not have kids and put those resources towards making the world a better place for those of us who are here.
It's amazing how many kids some people have even if they're dirt poor and can't support them. They're "giving life", but only a neglected and warped version of what life should be.
> What these "trolls" are trying to do is inform you that "hey, our OS does this too" or "hey, here's another solution to this problem".
No they're not. They're saying, "don't bother with that Linux stuff, OS X has what you need". It's not a welcome sort of comment in a topic discussing improvements to Linux. Macs aren't free and have their own set of problems.
> Everything that you or I would just click on, he right-clicks, moves the mouse the requisite six inches up to the top menu choice, "Open," and clicks. No amount of explaining will do.
I noticed my dad doing this a lot also. I think it might have been because he didn't find it comfortable to double-click on things. My Mom looked awkward with the double-clicks also; her movement was so exaggerated that the mouse moved and the second click sometimes "missed" the target.
I know there are ways to tweak this but they introduce other problems. They know enough now to choose their habits.
What? We're talking about Macs. Why would the operator talk about right-clicks? The whole idea was that only advanced users would enable it for themselves, and they don't call tech support.
From random readings it looks like CentOS might be a better alternative. I haven't used either but centos appears to have more of a community behind it.

From a regular user's perspective, the interesting thing about these things is the guaranteed lifespan (security updates etc.) until 2008, which is pretty nice for anybody doing "real work" and wanting a stable platform.
"enterprise is no good for my home box, it's not worth paying an "enterprise" license for home."
You could use a clone of RHEL: http://www.whiteboxlinux.org
I don't normally see this option mentioned for people who want to use commercial software that is only officially targeted at RHEL, but don't want RH support.
It's not a responsibility. It's free. If you make something with unrestricted copyright I'm free to take it and owe you nothing at all. So it's charity (apart from the payment for the physical boxed materials in this guy's case).
Oh boy, yeah go for it! More linux users on the wagon! Too bad about that somewhat commercialized attitude. Golly gee keep modding that post up, it's amazing posts like that why I come to Slashdot!
FUD? Are you totally dense? Most games are not on Mac. It's a fact. Why do you bother arguing this? It makes you look stupid. Only a select few ever come out, and even those are usually much delayed from the PC release.
1) Who says we are in an "age of abundance"? I don't feel anything is more abundant for me than it was for my parents. Besides the internet and various tech gadgets, where is this abundance?
2) Who says capitalism is unsuited to abundance? It works quite well in commodity markets.
Oh shut up crybaby. Fedora == free Red Hat. Go take your prozac and calm down. This stuff will run on Fedora as well as other Linux distributions. The sky is not falling. Relax.
I don't think "rivalry" prods them at all, they already have Mac and Windows to do that. Those Gnome people should have joined KDE, who were first, and then we'd all be better off. As far as I can see, the parallel Gnome effort hasn't given us any better options. The two desktops try to do the exact same things, and are configurable enough to make one more like the other. The only difference is the defaults (and Gnome's historical state of being always a couple steps behind KDE).
Well, the best deal is the midrange. A Radeon 9600 Pro is around $120. It has all the latest features, and can run all of the current games as well as the next generation quite decently.
If you're real poor you're better off with a Gamecube or something.
He only inserted those vague "XP's gui is shit" statements in order to fit in with the rest of you Linux whackos. If he said it was good you'd kick him out of the club.

So what?

Ubuntu appears to have a wider community, and the web site etc. "feels" less commercial. I can't easily find a free download for mepis for example...
I doubt you would have ever played it all if you hadn't stolen it anyway.
Maybe he wouldn't have... but since he's a gamer he would buy some game, except he doesn't because he plays the ones he downloaded.

"The somewhat do. They could release a version of ES or EWS with no support, that you could load on as many workstations as you want for a small fee."
Why can't ES/EWS be obtained unofficially? Is it GPL or not? The source is there.

This is relevant why?
Gah.

So I guess you own all those SNES games? Yeah right.
Traditional Unix style? That would be commandline shell.
