Like most, I had to check the date when I saw this story. I thought I had probably blacked out for a few months, as this must be an April Fools joke...
Rob, as one of the early registered users, I too, can't begin to thank you for creating this great community; like most, I spent an inordinate amount of time on slashdot. There honestly hasn't been a day where I've had an Internet connection and I haven't been on slashdot. What does that tell you? Actually, that might be an addiction. I should probably start looking for a 12 step program... I wonder if my EAP will cover that...
Anyway, you and Jeff did good. And you made a difference. I will never forget winning the Sugar Distribution Award!
Take care, and I wish you Godspeed in whatever path life leads you on.
Yeah, not to mention MULTI and the interactive apps (West, Star Trek, Karnath and of course xtalk). The folks from Luvern, Worthington, Hawley and Perham.
After 27 years in the IT field, I too was finally burned out of the IT field. The late nights, the on-call the less-than-bright users, the PHBs and the bullshit of non-technical people making technical decisions...
It took me a couple of years to finally figure out what my *REAL* passion in life was and I am now pursuing it. I started culinary school, been studying my ass off, but I couldn't be happier!
I have a wonderfully supportive wife who is keeping us afloat until I can get out of school. Granted, the pay for bakers / pastry chefs is about 1/3 - 1/2 of what I used to make, but when you weigh the cost of being burned out against your sanity, it doesn't matter.
The only advise I would give you would be to reduce the amount of your outgoing expenditures and find something that you REALLY want to do.
Like my dad always told me, "...do what you love and the money will follow..."
I too questioned the reason that the Linux game sales were low for Id and why I haven't bought that many Id titles. For me the reasons were:
1. It *IS* difficult to set up 3D games for Linux. And while things *HAVE* gotten better they are not up to par with the Winblows crowd; yet.
2. While most of the boxes that I run Linux on don't have a 3D card, I would be hard pressed to justify adding a new 3D card JUST to play games.
3. If I can find it (not that many retailers DO carry Linux games) chances are, I can find the same game for Winblows for less money. Maybe this isn't much of an issue for most folks, but at times, for me, it can be.
4. How many times can you play a variation on Quake? Personally, I've had enough Q/Q2/Q3/Qx and Half Life/Unreal Tournament, etc, etc, etc. If Id was going to come out with a different theme, I would consider purchasing it...
5. Loki has been on the receiving end of most of my gaming money spent on Linux. They do have the variety of titles.
Like those who were around "back-in-the-day" I too remember the Slashdot Effect, CmdrTaco and Roblimo - truly the golden age of Slashdot.
RIP Roblimo.
Been looking for the same thing for a while. Finally settled on File Transporter. http://www.filetransporter.com... Now owned by Drobo.

God I miss West (and Star Trek)...
I'm doing the same thing right now. Where did you go to school for B&P?

Generismo Francisco Franco is STILL dead...
and didn't get that much value from it. I was able to Google the information I needed. Cancelled my subscription after 3 months...
Probably more than 22 lbs... Damn. Just curious...
...that even a blind squirrel can find a nut from time to time...
Good God... After reading your comment, I thought I would search e-bay for "xbox mod" and holy shit... Here it is:

I'll take care of the Kool-Aid thing. What's your favorite flavor?
Now if we could only convince Kraft to make a tequilla flavored Kool-Aid, but alas...
