Robin "Roblimo" Miller, a Long-Time Voice of the Linux Community, Has Passed Away (wikipedia.org)
Reader rootmon writes: Our thoughts/prayers are with the family and friends of long time open source writer/journalist Robin "Roblimo" Miller who passed away this morning. Robin "Roblimo" Miller (born October 30, 1952) served as the Editor-in-Chief of Open Source Technology Group, the company which owned Slashdot, SourceForge.net, Freshmeat, Linux.com, NewsForge, and ThinkGeek between 2000 to 2008. Miller formerly owned Robin's Limousine, a small limo company based in Elkridge, Maryland, the origin of his online nickname. Miller is best known for his involvement with Slashdot, where he was not only the corporate editorial overseer but also Interview Editor.
As a freelancer, Miller wrote for a number of print and online publications including Time.com, Baltimore City Paper, American Medical News, Innkeeping World, Machine Design, The Baltimore Sun, and Rewired.com. Miller is the author of three books: The Online Rules of Successful Companies, Point -- Click Linux!, and Point -- Click OpenOffice.org, all published by Prentice Hall. His most recent ventures revolved around Internet-delivered video, including video software "tours" and tutorials on Linux.com and his recent "side" venture, Internet Video Promotion, Inc. Miller has been a judge for the Lulu Blooker Prize and is on the online advisory board of the Online Journalism Review of the Annenberg Center for Communication at the University of Southern California. (Biographical Info Quoted in Part from Wikipedia) Further reading: Linux Journal: RIP Robin "Roblimo" Miller.
Remembering Miller, ZDNet journalist S. Vaughan-Nichols wrote, "He was funny, bright, quick with a quip, caring, and wise. I, and many others who had the pleasure of knowing him, will miss him enormously." Paul Jones, Clinical Professor at the School of Information & Library Science, and Director of ibiblio.org, wrote, "Robin taught me many things, besides the immense gift of his friendship, including 'the way to make money on the internet is to take on more than you spend.' Both funny and accurate in context and very much true to roblimo." Writer and engineer Emmett Initiative said, "He was my editor, which means he was my best friend and worst enemy. He was a kind and thoughtful man that made every writer around him at least 300% better. I already miss him."

I for one, fondly remember the early days of Slashdot, where a single story could completely DDOS a website, creating the Slashdot Effect.
In his honor, I'm going to pour hot grits down Natlie Portman's pants.
Who's with me? :)
(just joking, Miss Portman; please don't send the Mossad after me)
RIP, RobLimo. :(

People like Roblimo and CmdrTaco put a ton of hard work and enegry into building Slashdot into what it once was. They obviously cared about their work beyond simply turning a profit. Please honor their work by keeping your promises to rebuild and improve Slashdot. You've made a lot of promises and users are sincerely hoping you'll finally start to keep them.
RIP Roblimo
It's sad to hear that a former editor from when I started reading this site has passed away. I remember what Slashdot was then, and those are fond memories.
Met him around 2002-2003 timeframe when we both worked at OSDN. He was a bright and funny guy.
RIP Roblimo.. and thanks for all the /.
..don't panic
One day we will all pass away and those left behind will grieve but at his age it is an even more sad occurrence.
I wish his family and friends strength and thank Robin for all the good he did.

Maybe we can DDOS the funeral?
The frequent reloads in the attempt to be first post on a story. Ahhh the good old days. Just glad to see that we had the respect to not do this on such a unfortunate turn of events.
The voices in my head don't like you
nobody has updated his Wikipedia page to report his death and it's even the primary article link!
Anons need not reply. Questions end with a question mark.
I remember the days when I saw that handle all the time on /.org. Thank you Roblimo!
Oddly enough, I don't recall seeing a picture of him until now.
Has Netcraft confirmed this?
Too soon?
RIP Roblimo

As a tribute to the days of early Slashdot I suggest we post this article to the site no less than 4 times over the next 8 days. It's not what Roblimo would have wanted but it's probably what he would have done.
Rest in peace.
In other words when he was "over the hill". He was a limo driver FFS, not the entitled son of a psychiatrist and a dentist. Fuck you Zuckerberg, you over the hill asshole.

I spoke with Rob a couple of times back in the internet fame days. We could talk for an hour without realizing the time had passed, such a gentleman and all around great person. He will be missed. My condolences to his family and those close to him. At least the world is a better place for his having lived here for so long.
Do you have ESP?
Rob was what you might call a real mensch. Smart and a real sweetheart. I knew him personally, tho' not exceptionally well.
We shared close mutual friends, some going back more than 30 years.
RIP, Rob. Thank you.

While I never met him in person, I did speak to him on several occasions over the phone/Skype and we did email over the years.
Very nice person and he will be missed.

Thanks for all the fish.

Roblimo was a special guest on this Slashdot Geeks in Space audio episode.
It's people like him and places like this one that welcomed me when I first found my way onto the Internet. They taught me what to value, and how to behave. I will forever be grateful for that, even if I don't come around that often anymore. Cheers, and godspeed.
I've never met the man but his name evokes an earlier time. Upon hearing the news I felt as if a bit of my past just vanished. That's an impact I can only hope my death would have on people who've only heard of me.
You did good, Rob. Time to rest.
I met Rob at a Linux conference in Atlanta around 1998-99...
We started talking and he was extremely excited and explaining about Slashdot's amazing rise.
He kept saying... "I'm "Phat" and sticky.. I'm Phat and sticky!!"
The "Phat" was the cool factor...and the sticky was how people just seemed to hang around on Slashdot all day. Obviously, it really helped Slashdot's value and worth.
Rob also showed me a picture of his lovely wife and told me how glad he was to be with her.
I left that conversation with a big smile on my face and hoped we would meet again soon.
Great job Rob!!
Impressive re even your own UID; oh, sorry, my bad --I was trying not to step on the sprinklers on, I'm guessing, what must be your lawn?
WARNING: Smartphones have side effects--most of them undocumented.
Rob's humor and contributions to linux advocacy will be missed. His early presence on Slashdot made it my go-to news site for many years.
My condolences to his family. Thanks for sharing him with us for all these years.
He was funny, brilliant, and smart.
Heâ(TM)s going to be missed, and it hurts, even though if you knew him youâ(TM)ve surely had heard about his failing health. I thought Mr. RobLimo had found the right place to slowly retire while being in good care. But then, this.
Wherever you go, hope you become /bin/smartassd, the best daemon there could be.
I always remember him as one of the better and less offensive submitter / editors.
Looks like he last posted in 2016 here
Sure its taken out of context (he was talking about linux audio editing) but i think its a nice optimistic quote to have as your last post.

See my subject: I'm sorry to hear this happened but it always does inevitably to every one of us. Mr. Steven Burn of Malwarebytes' hpHosts just had a stroke I found out (he hosts my APK Hosts File Engine for Windows on their site & I have the Linux 64-bit ready to go & can't get it there until he's up & around again).
* Lately, as I'm nearing my mid- 50's, I've looked around online for old pals to see how they've done in life & how they're doing/where they are - many died (in their 40's even, astounding on a couple of them as they were great athletes in their teens/twenties)).
APK
P.S.=> It's going to happen to us all - we're all "just visiting" here after all - but I am sorry to hear Roblimo passed away as I had no issues w/ him on this site or elsewhere (hopefully he's gone to a better place than this crazy world (@ times) & at least his troubles here are over (that's one good thing about dying to be "optimistic" about it))... apk
Rest well, Roblimo.

Trolling is a art,
Not a lot of great reasons to log into Slashdot these days but honoring Roblimo is unquestionably one of them. The man and his editing calculations will be forever missed ...
My work here is dung.
Robin was friendly and helpful and took his work as a journalist seriously. His work had worldwide impact, a fact that wasn't always appreciated. Robin and I corresponded often online, and I had the pleasure to meet him in person several times, and to be introduced to his charming wife once. Goodbye, Robin!

Now days its filled with dysfunctional wannabe's and MAGA people.
RIP Robin you will be missed.
I haven't viewed Slashdot in some time and happened to pass through and see this news.
Roblimo will be missed. Thanks for all the work you did to further the community here and around open source.

RIP Roblimo.
Yeah, holy crap, it's like /. of old when I mostly lurked. Too bad I lost my original login.

A sad day. My condolences to his family and those who knew him personally.
He was a man who knew what community meant, and built one here.
Long may your memory, and what you've built, live on...
This sucks.
I think of roblimo from a time when I really loved /. And I think of him and Hemos and Taco as much of why.
Blah.
It's always weird to find out someone who felt really familiar has passed away, even when you didn't really know them. I only interacted with Rob within the Slashdot universe - I remember him corresponding with me about an account issue, way way back - but he seemed like a good guy.
Thanks, Rob, for all you did.

I think he wins low UID status today, so far. There's a bunch of 3 and 4 digit UIDs posting, more than I've seen in a long long time.

Definitely a somber kick off to what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend. Terrible news, i'll always remember the early days of Slashdot as a community of well intentioned budding techs who thought we knew it all... Slashdot was our hub; and roblimo our conductor... That time will always fill me with fondness.

Thank you Roblimo for being you and may you rest in peace.
I met him in person once. Slashdot had a conference/party type thing in Boston in the early 2000s. He showed me around the Slashdot admin panel and let me approve a post on his behalf (just clicking the button). He was cool. Sorry to hear that he's passed.
Gracias por los buenos momentos en Slashdot.
RIP good man and thank you for all the good memories from back then.

Same here - I think that I had a low 4-digit ID from way back when.
He will be missed.
Rest in peace Roblimo. Your efforts helped to connect a whole lot of people.

My condolences to his family, they know that Roblimo has left a different kind of 'Slashdot effect' in the hearts and minds of millions of geeks. (We haven't even counted the ones who surface from their basement dwellings from time to time, to check if it's really raining)
I'm not him, but I left years ago for arstechnica until I got fed up with their community. Now I split my time across several sites. Problem is there will never be the geek utopia site because it costs money, and geeks are notoriously cheap. That's why ads, ads, ads, "you're the product" and cryptomining are all over the place. People like to blame it all on greed, but quite simply good things cost money, good people cost money, and no amount of technology will change that.

Wow... I just heard. I have so many fond memories from back when Rob was a fixture here. I would obsessively refresh my browser for the next story... some of which were posted by Rob. He was not as prolific a poster as others back in the day, but I do remember his being more apropos to the goings on at the time (unlike say Jon Katz... whom I think he interviewed once). God speed Roblimo. As you make your way through the unknown... may your grits always be hot, your Natalies always be Portman, your overlords always be robotic, and your clusters always be Beowulf.

Sad to hear of Roblimo's passing. This site from around 2000 to 2003 taught me a lot and made me feel -- for lack of a better phrase -- like a tech insider.

Seems appropriate to dig this account out of hibernation now. I was one of the early editors here, from 1998 or so. Worked with Roblimo for years. Very decent guy, did a good job of lending an adult presence to the group that was sorely needed. I'm sad to see him go.

How did he die? What killed him?
Some possibilities:
So what is it? What killed him at a relatively young age?
A lot of us (I was one) were part of the Slashdot community early on, but preferred to post w/o an account - I didn't get one until /. made changes that required an ID (which kind of miffed me, really), even though I'd been an active poster for years as an AC who put my actual name and sometimes email address in my sig... /. into the front page of the Internet for those actually building it. It's sad to hear of his passing - RIP to a friend I never actually met. /. is the quality of those posting and participating in those days - It wasn't unusual to have several big-name folks like ESR or Russ Nelson mixing it up with anyone in credible discussions/arguments. It seems the ill-advised "update" several years ago was largely responsible for raising the pain threshold enough that many great users just stopped dropping by...
Slashdot was once THE place to find out what was new on the net (I'm old enough to remember when that was NCSA's What's New page, or the UMN Gopher server), and Rob was a huge part of shaping

Wow - 137 UID. I remember rushing to sign up again after the database reset. /. was always the first site I would try on a new computer/browser/kindle/shoe-phone to see how it would render that critical stream of news for nerds.
My thanks to the legacy of Roblimo.
Your subject line is a lie! According to the article you linked, Mr. Miller was a great guy.
But I see what you did there. You're just honoring roblimo by imitating him:
"Because Prodigy paid Miller based on user activity, he did his best to spark debate in the political chat room.
"I'd just say stuff to piss people off," Miller said"
I think I met him once at one of my first linuxfests.
Feel like I've lost an old friend that I never actually met.
Godspeed, Roblimo. May God grant your family peace in the days ahead.
Hear hear. 50k here too. Haven't logged in here in quite a long time, and much longer since I've posted, but Slashdot (and Roblimo) were instrumental in my early career.
I'm very "late to the party", just heard about Rob a few hours ago. It's a minor devastation, a fleeting reminder of mortality in this immortal software universe we've built and live in.
Everything good that could be said about Rob has already been said, in more eloquent ways than I could say. So why am I posting at all? Well, when a loved one has passed, I'd like to believe that repetition of praises is never shunned but always welcomed. So here I am to add mine.
So I will echo what others have said and add my own thoughts. I discovered slashdot in the late 90's, it was *the* place for news in the nascent world of "internet tech nerds", but it wasn't just a place for nerds to read the news -- it was a "safe place" where we could just be nerds, talk about those things that mainstream news had no interest in covering, and have fun.
Those early days of /. will forever be special to me, and I'm happy to have been a part of them. I know that the early work of any startup is, at core, the passion of a few committed individuals, and I am and will be forever grateful for Rob and his contributions to that effort. RIP Robin Miller, you done good, super damn good, at least by the reckoning of this stupid nerd. I'm gonna miss ya, sincerely.
And to the current /. crew -- I have to admit, I was skeptical at first, but I am very impressed with the stewardship you have taken of this platform. After many years of "asleep at the wheel' management, you are doing an honor to Rob by keeping this site to its original mission, continuing to grow it, and keeping a fresh mind to the future. thank you for keeping it real, I'm looking forward to more of the good stuff.
Rob (speaking to your ghost, or your family or whatever) -- you helped organize open source nerds on the Internet in a super-early, super-critical-important time when we *needed* to be organized! Whatever anyone wants to say to the contrary, F them, slashdot was a very important part of making open source, Linux, all of that, a part of the national conversation and you did it. You won, we all won. Linux is now running most server infrastructure and a majority of mobile devices. MEGA PROPS TO YA AND YOURS!
According to comments at Linux Journal, Roblimo was morbidly obese and that's what killed him. There are way too many tech guys who are morbidly obese. Not good.
That just sucks.

I too remember the Old Days (TM). Slashdotting was an actual thing. We fearlessly rode the waves of the ether, and many a site trembled at the sound of our clicks.

SN is very similiar to the early days of slashdot, but years on, the viewship hasn't reached even early slashdot levels.
Moving slashdot to a nonprofit company and getting the right people in to avoid mismanagement could certainly help improve it, although I wonder if it could retain/drag viewship back from sites like facebook/reddit/co.
I first learned about Slashdot in Summer of '99 from a professor who was a huge fan. I took a long time to register after that because AC made it so easy to comment on Slashdot, even without an account. Over the years the dangers of machine learning have convinced me that having a corpus of documented works tied to you are not smart if you wish to retain your anonymity.
For just a post I am giving up on that to wish Robin "Roblimo" Miller rests in peace. I hope you had as much fun on your wild ride through life as you helped the rest of us have through your early contributions to Slashdot and then your duly earned retirement years, even if they were cut short too soon.
Here's to you Roblimo, may your contributions be remembered, at least until the end of Generation X. Most of the millenials have no idea of what they missed out on.

Oh wow, that brings back memories..
you have moved your mouse, please reboot to make this change take effect
He was one of the main reason that I joined, I will miss him.
It's quite a testament to see a lot of low UIDs posting their memories of him.
To pay respects.
Thank you and farewell sir.
Always sad to see someone go -- I remember chatting with him pretty avidly during a brief period when Slashdot was thinking of buying NTK.
Sad to hear this. I grew up with stuff those guys were bringing.
Silence
Thank you, sir, for all you have done and contributed to society and humanity. Your passing has made the process table a little lighter. RIP

Didn't know him personally, but much respect.
Farewell and commiserations to the people close to him. I only remember him as a name and words on a screen but back when Slashdot felt like somewhere to belong rather than just a site to read

Man, where have you been, like we got some buzz back in 2013, and thought it was you on youtube even https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUZICK77jck turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. ("fake news" to be more up-to-date with the jargon)
RIP. I recall the early days when I first started lurking peacefully here appreciating the stimulating conversation and articles posted. It's not the same now but it helped a fella out during some dark times. Roblimo I thank ya.
Pretty much. Would have had a low ID if I did it in my AC days, but it really was a bragging point more than anything. ACs back then were pretty much treated like everyone else.
Shai Schticks:"You don't make peace with friends, you make peace with enemies"
And some of us had an account early on, lost their password (and the email account associated with it, RIP the Cleveland Freenet), and found it (the password) years later in a notebook. It still worked.
I was definitely shocked and had to do a double take when I saw this news. While everyone will eventually pass, it doesn't make it any less "sad".
Roblimo's passing hit a little close for me.
RIP
Thanks for all the grits.
I'm lucky enough to have hugged roblimo in person.
We didn't always agree. But we always cared about what each other said. ...and isn't that the best any of us can ask for in a relationship?
Likewise. But by the time slashdot started requiring uidâ(TM)s, I was already loosing interest in it, so it was a long time before I bothered to get one at all. That, and implementing moderation. After it had become successful enough to require those things, it was already too much of a circus to enjoy a constructive discussion.
I haven't posted in years, but wow. Thanks for all the fish, rob. /. feels smaller without you around.

Farewell and Godspeed, roblimo. Thank you for being the person you were.
I don't have a particularly low UID, but nonetheless, bye Roblimo.

oh jesus h christ, what is this mess? how can you be so uncouth? this is just beyond.
Look at em, nowdays. You were here, almost before the beginning.
Bye, Rob.
"Flyin' in just a sweet place,
Never been known to fail..."
Sounds like him. He was generous, in the bigger sense of the word.
"Flyin' in just a sweet place,
Never been known to fail..."
Good to see you, Jeff!
My kids just had 18th birthday. They arrived the day Sega.com and the Dreamcast site went live, at EC3.
Yeah! My VMs run applications for which we used to dedicate Sun Enterprise boxes.
"Flyin' in just a sweet place,
Never been known to fail..."
Same. Slashdot rendered so badly, with fixed width graphics and no CSS. If I could read it on a CE phone, then I could see anything.
"Flyin' in just a sweet place,
Never been known to fail..."
Natch. A requirement.
"Flyin' in just a sweet place,
Never been known to fail..."
you are a fucking tool. you bought this account on ebay you fucking poser fag.
Every now and again something catches your attention and reminds you that time is flying by. This sad news definitely falls into that category.
Hard to overstate the impact Slashdot had, and roblimo right along with it. Feeling old and nostalgic...
This account still exists? Wait, slashdot still exists?
How's life in the hypocrite lane?
I just read about this on meh.com. So i came to read.
RIP Rob.
Have you read my journal today?
RIP Roblimo. His name has been synonymous with this site for as long as I can remember. He will be missed.
Gopher, ha! And pine/elm mail client via telnet to read the listserv you singed up for. A LOT has happened since I came back to computing in the mid 90s. Slashdot helped shape a great portion of my understanding of 'how' things work.. maybe not the 'why,' but it was an amazing time to be in tech.
I kinda blame the highly-monetized, overly-curated newsfeeds that only seem to inspire endless clickbait; forums that aren't community-moderated (thank you /. for the filter comments function), but moderated by companies that don't know porn from an artist's rendition of the nude form. There's more, but, meh.
Something about the world today doesn't seem to inspire curiosity in younger generations to the degree of previous generations. Whatever the reason(s), I really hope it doesn't fully poison the wonders of a life of learning..of seeing connections that you didn't notice before or finally finishing that project, whether code or sculpture, and feeling the satisfaction that comes with finality--maybe a new project because it's now becoming fun and new ideas are coming so rapidly that you know you just won't have enough time to do them all.
Slashdot and the early internet were an experience that I'm happy to say I was in the thick of. The early staff of /., like Roblimo and Commander Taco, made this website the place to be..to learn and even connect with others.
