I was watching some show. Dateline or whatever. Talking about how the big Investment Bankers were hiring these consultants to pump up stocks and since they were on TV they were listened to.. blah blah blah..
The point that these analysts made that really interested me and is actually on topic here is that they were pumping up stocks that "had no firm business model, had no patents, and had no way to prevent others from competing with them" They want on to explain that this was why the stocks then fell because when it was pointed out that not holding a patent was not protecting your business issues people ran from the comapny.
Alot of other factors added in but I think this is why we're seeing this made rush to stupid patents. Companies think that a patent will grow the company again by stigmitizing their competitors.
Why is it everytime we hear of a game that is excessivly violent or is the cornerstone of the 3d gaming community (strictly in government and press related issues) they mention Doom? I mean really has nobody played Quake? If your going to use Doom as an example then you might as well use Wolfenstein 3d as an example. Lets get into the 21st century here. I mean you don't use 286 computers to give an example of todays processing power
Anyhow that just pisses me off.

If we can do this, And I belive there was another device that could use a laser to destroy inboud missles from the ground (it's being used in Israel) then why do we need to have orbiting satalites that in my understnading are going to have explosive weapons rather than lasers?

I don't think we (the ego-loaded slashdot community, the net in general, citizens of the US, etc) have the power to make the changes our get out important issues on the table.
Ralph Nader said himself that if he tried to do today what he did with 'Unsafe at any speed; that he wouldn't even get his foot to the door to be able to stick it in. This gov is not controlled by the people anymore.. It's controlled by corparations and more importantly money. And if anyone's voice speaks against those they aren't silenced.. Just ignored which to me is the exact same thing.
When are the people of the US going to start taking on the challangs of getting involved and making changes. C'mon slashdot.. You people seem to think we have all the power in the world... why aren't we changing things? We just bitch and moan and then move on to the next subject the next day.

This company is a NOT FOR PROFIT organization! why would you partner with a comapny that is going to charge you insane amounts of money for there own personal gain while your company isn't making a dime while trying to help other people.
I used to work for another NFP org. that dealt with Fannie Mae alot. They subscribed to the M$ way of life and in 1999 2 months before Y2k they still had over half of the organization on 486's with win3.1 because they couldn't afford to continue to upgrade.
That is exactly why NFP companys should be embracing linux above all else. It's going to decrease your It budgret by at least 2-300 dollars per computer. Think of the enhancment that would give to the rest of the business.
And don't reply saying there are incompatibilities. this NFP org I'm referring to used a AS400 for all banking/accounting/whatever and used the systems for nothing more that Term sessions, Word Processors and Chart. all of which can be done under linux with as much productivity as they need.

WHAT BULLSHIT! I for one tell at least 5 people everyday to look at NUMEROUS articles on slashdot. My number one conversation mover is to talk about the stories that are slashdot. I spread the word of all these, YRO, Patent, Space(gotta love nasa) to as many people that will listen. I have even printed out some of these articles and mailed them to users without computers! Who the hell are you to guarantee something about another person. That makes you no better then the patenters themselves.

What in the world makes you think that they're going to use some standard tech to do this? Total Annihilation should replace Dune on the list. I know dune started the whole RTS thing but TA has changed it in a way unduped by the creators themselves. TA: Kingdoms sucked and was lacking many of the quality landscapes that TA brought us.
I also don't agree with Half-Life. I didn't enjoy that game at all. In fact it made me realize why ID was in the lead for first person shooters. There's no reason for a storyline. What's the point. All the built in levels are just prep for online play.

My Problem was that the retail stores never had it so I could never get a copy. Plus I have a ATI Rage Fury and the demo works for shit under linux.
