Loki should set up a donation page like the Mandrake one I found to be a much more efficient method of supporting my favorite distro company than paying for a bunch of packaging, distribution, retail-markup, etc. for box and cds (vs. ftp + burner).
Someone calculate how long it would take for Loki to be ok if 1 in 20 slashdotters were to go to a Loki donation page and credit card them $20.
A lot of people are attributing poor game sales to some kind of cultural incompatibility related to Linux's being developed by open-source, free software, volunteers; but that's a seriously Linux developer centric view.
The real reason Linux doesn't have a chance is that gamers love hardware. Hundreds of thousands of people didn't camp outside of Walmarts for days last October b/c they couldn't resist the whole new level of software (about 10 crappy release titles) available on the PS2. They couldn't have really cared about the games (considering how much better countless Dreamcast titles were, for example). They just wanted maximal numbers of polygons.
Gamers who are paying $400 for video cards which are 15% faster than $150 video cards aren't going to pay to play the same games on a different operating system with the performance of a $40 video card. People who buy $50 games tend to have modern video cards. If the operating system they are using supports that video card but an alternative operating system doesn't, then they sure as hell aren't going to buy games for the alternative operating system.
I've had a Radeon for a year now and there still isn't a single distro with out of the box support for it. I can't even play Tux Racer, let alone any Loki game. Anyone who wants good 2D quality and/or dual-display, and/or VIVO, etc. won't have an nvidia card, but all other cards have crap 3D in Linux.
A LOT of "normal" people are starting to use linux these days. A lot MORE would be using it if they could play 3D games with it, but they can't unless they have an outdated, slow, or nvidia card. Most people spending money on games, therefore, don't have decent 3D in Linux.
Good for you, but some of us have video cards which don't have 3D support yet. I have a Radeon and there is no distribution available that I know of which provides accelerated 3d for it yet. Mandrake 8.2 will almost definately be the first.
How the hell is that a troll? So anyone who can appreciate a beautiful machine, and doesn't react positively to hearing about how a real life Beavis thinks its cool to burn one, is trolling?
How could it not be obvious that the buyer is Sony? Aside from how obvious it is just from Sony's actions pertaining to Be over the last year or so, buying the best technology at rock-bottom prices is what Sony has been doing for 30 years. You think Sony invented Trinitron? Not, they bought it dirt cheap out of America and have been making a fortune on it, patented, ever since.
Does anyone happen to know when we can expect to see Mandrake 8.1? I figure it would have to be pretty soon. I've never looked forward to a release so much as I've been looking forward to 8.1, cuz 8.0 was such a huge improvement over 7.2 even though it was a bit too early for things like XFree86 4.1.x. Can't wait to finally get all the kernel optimizations for AMD and 3-D card drivers that should be in 8.1. I expect I'll be able to play QuakeIII with Mandrake 8.1, which will mean that I can finally go single-boot. I expect it will probably also have KOffice 1.
How come Apple is still the only company in the world who makes a well-designed tower case? Hasn't it been like 4 years now since the turquoise G3 (same case as g4) came out? I wonder how many years it will be before anyone else can come up with notebooks which are halfway as cool as Titanium and iBook.
Same way they were able to stop two smallish Swedish heavy truck (tractor trailer) manufacturers - Scania and Volvo (trucking division only) - from merging up in their little country there where it's not like they would really be bothering anybody, just making their operations a little more efficient to compete in world market where it makes sense for small companies to merge in countries that have their own languages and uncommon ways of doing things. Meanwhile, the EU loves companies government subsidized borderline monopolies in their own countries, like Airbus.
This would be true if computers were significantly cooled by conduction of heat to case surface, however they aren't. Computers are generally cooled by convection at internal surfaces combined with either active or passive circulation of air through vents.
By the way, I'm American but my mother is from Finland, as I can see from your email address that you are too. In fact, my mother took a class in computer science from Linus's uncle, or maybe it was his professor, can't remember. So far, I'm the only Tuomas I've ever met in this country.

Just curious: what are you/OSX doing to utilize your current 704MB, let alone 1.5GB for playing mp3s?
You have to understand that nothing is ever going to stop Steve Jobs from trying to make cubes that run BSD. That's his whole motivation. In approximately ten years Jobs will have once again had enough success at making noncubes, that he'll be able to convince someone to let him make another one, and no one will buy it, but then he'll be forced to earn the priviledge again. Yes it's a sickness, but at least it's mostly a productive one.
What I'm wondering is what color the next one will be. The first one was black (absorbed all wavelengths), the second one was clear (transmitted all wavelengths), he can't do white b/c that's what normal pcs are, I guess he could do chrome (reflect all wavelengths), but chrome has fingerprint problems, hmm...
I think it's *alot* faster on AMD machines cuz of whole host of AMD optimizations. I noticed a big difference in latency while running X on my k6-III+ machine. I've also had no problems whatsoever with stability (no more nor less stable than 2.2), despite the cheap FIC mb with VIA chipset, and other hardware I don't trust 100%, but this is only a desktop system. So, for desktop use at least, performance advantages of 2.4 can be very noticable while stability is still, for example, a million times better than Windows.
They may have only just found out about it like Kodak and are only slower and/or less public on the uptake. Someone had to be the first to complain, why not Kodak? I expect we'll hear from others soon.
In other words the hardware was designed so badly that a year and a half after the PS2 came out in Japan, PS2 games aren't significantly better than those for the oldest console on the market (PSOne). Sounds like they should have had some Americans or Europeans design it instead.
Wasn't it supposed to be "alpha-quality"? I mean, had Eazel even had 9 months to work on it? As for speed, I always thought that that was largely b/c it was using the super-slow old Mozilla which hadn't undergone performance tuning yet. Does anyone know whether or not post-Mozilla0.9 Nautilus is a lot faster?
Will someone, once and for all, explain to me why Eazel is so often held up as the classic example of linux "dump company"? Please go further than saying something obnoxious and/or simplistic like "they spent X million dollars to make crappy file manager" b/c we all know that Nautilus was way more than just a "file manager" in the typical sense.
Personally, I was very impressed with everything Eazel had done so far (except for how it took so long to takeover desktop during startup), and I had really been looking forward to seeing more from the company because I'd felt they were really beginning to provide, in a unique way, the kind of additional usability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal that would make linux more attractive to a wider range of potential users.
In some form, a little more rigorous than in the typical off-hand remarks as exemplified above, I would really like to hear what was so Godawful about Eazel.
I have to disagree with the "almost all of the ground breaking advancements in game/console...hardware come from Japan" part for obvious reasons. For one thing, practically every recent console has been based on American and/or European technology. N64 graphics were by SGI, Dreamcast graphics were 3DFX + PowerVR (Kyro), Gamecube's graphics are ArtX/ATI, XBox is Nvidia, and if I'm not mistaken, the PSOne's graphics were designed by an American team connected with MIT. I can't remember who did PS2's graphics, but even if they are Japanese, the PS2 has basically turned out to be, although a marketing success, a major letdown technically.
Dude, you need to turn off that Playstation and get out a little more. Metal Gear Solid, for example, may be the best game for PS2, but the PC version sucks compared to countless non-Japanese competitors. Ever heard of Black and White, Tropico, The Sims, Command and ConquerX, WarcraftX, The Longest Journey, No One Lives Forever, NascarX, etc.. Is there a single category of game other than in the classicly Japanese anime-esque role-playing genre that a Japanese game is actually the best? I guess that a cool thing about XBox will be that it will be the first time that the greats of console gaming will finally be duking it out with the greats of PC gaming on the same platform.
Gates has been FUDing his way to the top for the last 20+ years. He's always been a whiney spoiled brat and everyone's always known it, but it sure didn't take him long to become the richest man in the world. It's as if every time he whines we forget about the last time he fucked us, and just start focusing on the new dick in our ass, but never punish him for the last one, and so he rapes us to infinity.
And then, EVERY TIME, there's the simplistic idiots who have no idea what they are talking about saying shit like "Hey, no one came to my door and put a gun to my head and made me use Windows, and yet I use it, so Microsoft can't be a monopoly." Extremely depressing how much influence idiots, who always come in great and vocal numbers, can have in this country.
You can't build a a laptop yourself, though. In addition to all the standard odious shit that comes with brand name desktops, brand name laptops have all that weird stuff like extra partitions for hybernating Windows. I'd prefer it if someone like Pogo made Linux laptops, but it's looking like I'm just going to have to get an iBook with OS X.
Oh, and No I will not get one of those gay "ooh, I want that one cause it's got lavender plastic on it" VAIOS just b/c they have somehow become the cool thing to put linux on as if Sony wasn't one of the most Microsoft-wannabe companies out there (don't get me started on how they got Trinitron or their many shitty tactics with PS2 buildup).
Someone calculate how long it would take for Loki to be ok if 1 in 20 slashdotters were to go to a Loki donation page and credit card them $20.

This may be the stupidest thing I have ever seen on Slashdot. It's not funny, or l33t, or clever, it's just fucking stupid.

More seriously, though, at least this means they'll be able to make the next iMac more kickass w/ less worries of cannibalizing sales of other models.
