I generally love my Arcticooler and am surprised how little attention it gets considering how awesome its performance/(noise+size) ratio is.

How do you clean it though? That's my problem with it. I don't want to take it off because it was a bitch to get on my extremely tight motherboard (VA-503+), but I haven't come up with a decent way of getting in between all those fins in the center to get all the dust out. I know that dust has got to be hampering thermal transfer.

It would be easier if, for example, you could get Windows fonts off of a floppy or the internet.

In fact, there are countless easier ways of installing fonts than having to either edit text files or rely on a button which automagically retrieves them from Windows partition (which you don't want to need to have anyway).

Linux's current font system (or lack thereof) is actually a perfect example of just what's preventing it from being a true desktop alternative.

  13. main advantage: less commercial programming on Satellite Radio Is Officially Here · · Score: 1

  14. maybe so, but that's mostly BS on AMD To Close Plants, Lay off 2300, Lose Gateway · · Score: 1
The real reason they don't want to sell AMD is that Intel is more expensive. PC companies (Dell being the classic example) have the opportunity to be selling the PC equivalent of Mercedes (pricewise) in Honda numbers. In other words, PC companies are finding that PC customers are stupid enough to buy just as many PCs when they're unnecessarily expensive as they do when PCs are cheaper.

Why? Because people like to identify themselves with status whenever they get the chance. They may not be able to buy a Mercedes, but at least they can swing a PIV. When there are only two CPU companies, and one is much cheaper than the other, then people in a consumeristic society are going to equate the older, more expensive brand with higher status, and the cheaper one with lower status (like Mercedes versus Hyundai or something). These people don't want to hear that there might be something faster than a PIV. As long as they're with the majority/most popular thing, they're satisfied.

Just as people are buying $60,000 SUVs only because other people on the block are buying big stupid SUVs, people are listening to that pot-head Dell ad kid and buying overpriced Intel PCs. For the same reasons that every car company in the world (Ferrari next?) is dying to come out with the latest luxo-SUV (you should see the profit margins), PC companies are dying to get the old cpu monopoly era computer prices back.

Mo Money is the real reason.

  15. C# compiler!?!? on Inline Review With Miguel De Icaza · · Score: 2, Interesting
Is it really necessary for the people who had once created the most visually appealing GUI I'd ever seen to now be spending their time making a C# compiler? It appears to be the main thing they're working on.

Is there actually something good about C# that I don't know about? Not even all the pathetic MS development instuctors I've been hanging out with think it has a prayer for survival. For what it's worth: Over the entire summer at a major program development teaching company I worked for, not a single request was made for C# instruction, while Java courses were being requested on a daily basis.

The best alternative to Windows would not be an operating system which operated in exactly the same way so you wouldn't have to learn anything to use it.

This is nothing really, considering that it's a console coming after the PS2.

Talk about anti-competive practices (starting much further ahead of their release than MS'), the lies, deception, bullying of retailers, and shady backroom deals Sony pulled to make sure technical merit and consumer choice would not get in the way of the success of the PS2, pretty much set the precedent.

Lets face it, in order to make a console now, you first have to make zillions of dollars doing something like selling tvs or monopoly software so you can buy out all channels of hype and lose tons of money until you have a monopoly, and also you to be more ruthless and despicable than anyone else in your business practices.

Microsoft is going to have to kick it up about a hundred more notches, which of course they will. Hold on tight. I'm just glad that the Xbox is actually going to be a decent console.
