Agreed, perhaps I digressed from the original point of the post though.
However, it is plain to see in many countries, expecially the UK where I live, that Governments that were elected by the population are getting increasingly worse at doing what they are told to do:-)
I'm sorry, but not always does the "Govt. knows best" idea wash - expecially if you take a look at the UK's transport policy, for a crude example.
I guess I'm just cynical because only 50% of our population actually bothered to vote in the last General Election!
Mario Monti, the EU competition comissioner is a real ball-buster. MS will have more trouble "buying" the trust of the Eurocrats than they did in the US. It will just be interesting to see what they end up doing.
BTW, when I say "US", I refer, of course, to the administration, not the citizens.
What you say is true in my opinion. Though OS X has the advantage of not having to build-in and on top of lots of elements (most of them defunkt) from previous incarnations of the OS.
Yes, Apple have preserved many aspects of their original OS (and why not?) but for the likes of Windows, and many X Windows Managers for example, they have to build on top of and try to paper over the cracks and mistakes of previous versions. For example, how many ways can you close a window in Windows 2000? Press the 'X' in the top-right, double-click on the icon in the top-left - carries over from Windows 3.1, and click and select on the drop down menu on the top-left icon. It's a crude example but it illustrates the point.
It was the English Civil War, Britain did not exist as a political enitity until the Act of Union in the 18th Century sometime. The Civil War was the 17th Century.
Sure, I feel the same way about RMS, but his opinions are his own, etc. Open source != Free software, apparently, but what he fails to realise is that nobody gives a shit. ---

Mario Kart was and still is the best game ever written, and no-one gets killed. Amen. I say this as I have been playing it for about 8 years, and it's still fun. ---

Assuming that this is not just some flamebait, NO, IT DOES NOT defeat the purpose of Free Software.
Free as in speech, not as in Beer, for Chrissakes.
In fact, I would encourage paying for Free Software, as it covers the companies'/individuals' costs whilst preserving the freedom you have with the source code.
I encourage you to peruse Gnu.org to get your head around it. ---

If you read their security bulletins, the order goes something like this:
'Issue' gets posted to the security site as a bulletin;
Patch is available as a download from the bulletin, or from other parts of the MS Security site;
Eventually, it gets bundled to the Windows Update site.
Because patches require additional packaging and set-up for the Windows Update site, they are delayed by about a week, depending on dependencies. ---

Excuse me, but it's the labels who own the copyrights on the work that is distributed, not the artists. All the artists get is the result of their contract with the label.
In other words, Napster is only hurting the bottom lines of the labels and companies making this music, not the "poor artists".
For those of you who know of Jamiroquai, a UK hip-hop artist, you'll know what I mean. I.e. "Save the rainforest" and then he goes out to buy 2 Lambourghinis and a mansion.
Why should I care about a frankly small dent in their income? ---

(possible dupe as I cannot remember is this as been put here before) for an interesting artcile on this phenomenon. They call it "Software cruft".
Heck! If you don't like it, just add us to the Axis of Evil or something. That'll teach us!
Neither do i. Be tempted.
I tell you what though, for the amount they charge for hardware in the UK, they might as well be laced with crack!
Believe me, they cost a lot more! Go to www.apple.com/ukstore. For example:
new iMac entry-level in U.S. = $1,299 (£920.00)
new iMac entry-level in U.K. = £1,149 ($1,637.00)
Sheesh! No wonmder most people would rather spend a third of that on a reasonable PC. Bummer.
Windows comes with manuals?? I thought they had shares in the IDG "For Dummies..." Company?
I'm a pedant too:
It was the English Civil War, Britain did not exist as a political enitity until the Act of Union in the 18th Century sometime. The Civil War was the 17th Century.
Curse those GCSE's!
Sorry about that.
Not only that, but what about the speed-demons who love and use Lynx/Links/etc.? Streaming video? Pah!
It's text all the way!
The chances are you ruined your 98 partition, not the distro. No partitioning tool would do something on its own without being told.

This is typical of security in all systems. Only secure as the weakest link, which inevitably is the human mind or habits.
