Game Genie, that was it, thank you.

Your description of Nintendo's argument against Game Genie is very similar to MS's argument against mod-chips (stability, unauthorized games). You are right though, DMCA does change anything, even though only real diff between Game Genie and a mod chip (from a user point of view) is that you don't need to open up your NES to install the Game Genie.

Still, it could be used as an example of how this stuff has been around for a while, heck, same thing existed for the Commodore 64...anybody remember the SnapShot or SuperSnapShot cartridge? I think I'm showing my age :-)

I thought that argument was put to rest when those gameshark cartridges came out for the NES. Maybe I'm thinking about the wrong thing, but I could have sworn lawsuites were filed and gameshark won in the long run.

That has been my philosophy since about 1996, and it has served me well. Having a notebook also helps to making sure that important data is duplicated.

I buy a new HD about every 18 months, it usually gives me enough room to dump my (full) previous HD, and still have an equivalent amount of free space. It takes me about 18 months anyways to fill up what's left on the new hard drive.

My friend's trick is to buy small sized hard drives from a big retailer that gives the 'premium' warranty, which is usually good for 2-3 years. When the warranty is almost out, he backs up his data, takes the drive out of the case and drops it from waist height onto the floor. He brings it in, and thanks to Moore's law, gets a new drive that is usually about twice as big as what he originaly had, since HD manufacturers stop making the small sized drives with time.

Five years ago in downtown Montreal (Canada) there used to be five different cinemas, with prices ranging from $8.00 CAD to $2.50 CAD (the lower price was for movies just about to come out on video).

Now there are only 2 theatres (new ones that didn't exist back then, the others, all shut down), and the price for a ticket is somewhere between $11.00 CAD and $13.00 CAD.

I used to go and see between one and two movies a week five years ago, now I'll see one movie every month or two, at best.

I undertand that in England $13.00 CAD is only 5.75 GBP, but over here that type of price is plain extortion. I wish easyCinema the same success as their airline venture.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Something I don't want others to mess with is private. If people can mess with blocks of code marked private, then how can I guarantee my product will work for them? As for security, I mean security as in SCOPE, not as in "you'll never see my code 'cause all my methods are private".

I am curious as to how much code you write. This isn't an undocumented feature, this is a serious security issue. An undocumented feature would be having access to a method that was not described in an API, but which is still public. When it is private, the developer does not wish you to have access whatsoever.

It's a completely different thing when the person comes from your own coutry, where even the most basic of background checks would have shown that the guy had spent only a fraction (11/91) of a year in the military, and had never been an officer.

And in the case of the Russian officer, at least he really was a Russian officer, but had not actually served in Chechnya. I don't think it's fair to show those two mistakes in the same light.

It's another song in this key
Yeah but this one's about me
So like it or not people will keep pumping out the same stuff over and over, but it will sound 'new' to them. But I am sure there will always be a percentage of people who think they are in the 'know' and will only appreciate renditions of the originals. I'm sure there were other composers in the 18th century that did songs similar to Beethoven, but any discerning classical music fan would rather hear interpretations of Beethovon. Those are the die-hards, and those are the rock markets of tomorrow.

I agree with you entirely and I find it interesting to read your comment since last evening myself and a few friends were discussing how the rock genre is in the process of dying and that an inevitable void that will occur when bands such as the Rolling Stones finally disapear for good.

We came to the agreement that a market would exist for bands to emulate the stones, led zepp and others and be quite successful at it since current 'original' bands just don't cut it and fail to properly carry the legacy. Already existing examples we could thing of included The Back Doors and Bjorn Again both of whom are able to draw a crowd of 2,000 at almost any given moment.

So, how long will it be until officially sanctioned cover bands step in to replace the Stones once they get too old to tour, but are still a profitable commodity?
