Right. And I'm suggesting that just because you use the computer to produce a musical recording it does not have to be "computer generated beeps" or anything of the sort. There has been some nice stuff done with guitar, sax, pipe organ, etc.
My suggestion about the pan flute.....well, anything would be an improvement on that. Hmmmm....a Zamphier dance remix....you might have something there.
I wont argue with what others here have said about what a degree and diploma represent. That's all fine and dandy.
It seems to me that the person with the question might have a resume that represents much the same thing. I know that my resume shows a combination of formal education, self education, work experience, hobby experience, etc. that gives little doubt as to what I can do. My resume also shows a broad range of experience and education as well as showing that I complete major projects that I choose to take on (I just didn't choose to take on a college career).
What I'm saying is, for some of us, a resume and job perfomance can stand up as well or better than a diploma. If you are the right person for the position you wish to advance to and your employer chooses someone else simply in favor of a degree....time to step back and look at who you're working for. If they are telling you that a degree is required for advancement then they really don't have their priorities set right. They aren't looking at the goal (i.e. putting the right person into the position to get the maximum benefit).
I would like to demonstrate this. Could somone write a HTML document for me this will do something harmless yet dramatic, like shut down the computer? Then email me the link. This way we can all use your HTML to show people what this bug does. A picture is worth a thousand words, but a demonstration HTML would be worth a bunch more Micro$oft systems converted to Linux or Unix.
You wouldn't want to pack it around because of the weight and bulk. It's just that much more to snag on something down in the hole and if you're in rescue you're in a hurry.
The self rescuers they gave us would actually burn your lips and do permanant damage. But, for what they are, they're really small and who the hell cares about burned lips if it's the difference between life and death.
Yeah......superfund sites. There's a bunch of political bullshit for you.
I grew up in the mining area near what is now the Bunker Hill Superfund Site. You know what they do there? They remove lead from the ground in the area. Do you know what Bunker Hill did when they were a mining and smelting company? Hmmmmmm....give you three guesses.
When it's done to make a profit it's called mining. When it's done as a socialist excuse to spend tax dollars and beat up people who are trying to make a buck, well then we call it a superfund site. But a rose by any other name is still a rose. And that superfund site is just a mine with a different name and a not-for-profit management.
Don't go looking at the superfund sites in this country to compare us to the third world. It just doesn't work that way.
Look here son, grab a seat and lemme tell ya 'bout it.
See here, there aint a damn thang wrong with eatin beaver from time to time. Hand me one of them toothpicks huh. You might get a little hair caught in yer teeth from time to time, but that's life son.
Now I want you to grow up to be a man. And be a man that I can be proud of. So I don't want you actin like such a big pussy when somethin dies. Skunk comes an moves in under the house, you take the bastard and kill it or it comes back. You need to keep warm in the winter so you kill a tree and burn it for heat. These things are natural son.
Imagine if it wernt that way 'tall. You want a bite of a nice juicy steak. Son, you don't kill that fucker first your gonna get your ass trampled with the first cut with your steak knife. I mean hell, rare's one thing but come on.
You want a bit of salad with that steak, you're gonna have to kill the lettuce. I know plants are alive too and they never hurt nobody, but ifin you're gonna eat, they gotta die.
So grow up son. Don't be such a pussy. One day you'll be married too and come to realize that fur might be murder but it's the best part of the beaver.
Your statement that there are more people than jobs is a whole different philosophical issue that I won't even touch here. But it sounds like your point is that we either use force to make business stay in the U.S. or we use our money to develop other countries more to our "standard". Hmmmmm....pretty imperialistic, and not what our country is about.
I'm not recommending that companies pack up and leave. As another post pointed out, that's usually idle threat. But in order to stay in business a company has to make a profit (hello dot coms) and in order to make a profit they have to look at all expenses. Sure, it would be nice to pay every janitor a six figure income and feel good about helping him out, but business doesn't and can't work that way. The ability and freedom for a company to pack up and move jobs anywhere is necessary for it to be healthy and profitable. Without profit the company folds and you don't have any jobs in any country.
So it's the abilty to relocate that I advocate. I don't recommend that they do it, I don't want them to do it, and I damn sure don't like unions forcing them into positions where the costs of labor demand that they do it. But they need to have that option available to them.
If you really think that I'm being less than patriotic, remember this: Being American is not about being rich or making more money than the other guy. It is about the freedom and ability to do so. I advocate that people in our country be paid what the market will pay them. I advocate that the American companies be given the freedom to pay labor the market rate.
I see the idea of forcing companies to pay a certain wage as unpatriotic. Our country is about freedom, not force. The us/them mentality of company/labor is also unpatriotic because in this country you have the freedom to be the company, a part of the company, or create a company of your own. Restrict business, or use force on companies, and you are restricting your own freedom.
That is why unions do so much damage. By raising the cost of labor to the employer (and the employee) they force companies to look for third world solutions to labor costs. With the unions in place, the individual employees have little input with the company in creating solutions to prevent that and save their jobs. The unions insist in "bargaining" (i.e. "forcing negotiations") and that creates a shield between company management and the line employees preventing constructive communication.
So you're right, if I want to put 25+ years in a company I'll want to have some input with the company and have the company respect my input for what it is. No way would I want a union preventing that.
On the one hand, you two seem to point the finger at the IRS. It is true that the IRS is an unconstitutional agency using unfair methods to extract unreal amounts of money from anyone comming close to living the "American Dream"(tm).
But then there is the other hand, and you've only eluded to it. It's a game. And anyone smart enough to be worth that kind of money should be either smart enough to play that game or hire someone to play it for him/her. That's how it's done.
My opinion that the people used as examples are dumbasses stands.
Some guy makes six figures for several years, gets laid off, and in less than a year he winds up in a homeless shelter.
If that is true then I would take from the article that the guy was laid off for being some sort of dumbass. Come on, if he was making such good money, after even a single year of employment he should have had enough cash savings built up to sustain him for at least a year. (Yes, it would require a lifestyle change and moving out of California, but he would be far above living in a homeless shelter.)
If we're to believe this piece of "news" then the people they quote for examples in the story are either stupid and needed to be canned for being stupid or they are abusing the support system in place for the homeless and maybe got canned because their employers recognized this lack of moral fibre and didn't want that kind of person around when times do get tough.
"there's a substantial risk the heavy metal will leach into the environment." Oh no, a natural substance may be returned to the earth where it will kill everything in it's path.
"PCs also contain lead, mainly in the solder that holds chips to circuit boards, and in that form it's even more likely to escape into the environment." Oh my dear god, this stuff could ESCAPE! Nothing like using a trigger word to get people to panic. Lead came from the very enviroment these people are worried about it escaping to. Lead is mined folks, right here on earth!
Please. Lead is natural. Yes, you are harmed if lead enters your body either from an AK-47 round or by eating paint. But computer parts in a landfil.....that's a big stretch of the imagination.
"The 'polluter pays' principle sends a strong signal to the companies to change," Again we see some brilliant thinking and innovation in free form logic. So, if I make you a cheeseburger and sell it to you, you then throw any part of the cheesburger or is wrapper into the street as litter, I'm a polluter and should be made to pay. I am evil. I am satan.
This is some pretty emotional stuff. It has to be because the logic doesn't work but these people need you on their side. This is big business, lots of opportunity to get rich for everyone in enviromental panic.
If this was such a serious and real issue, logical questions would be asked. How many of those monitors needed to be replaced? Was repair attempted? Come on, aren't you just getting a bigger monitor....fine, give this one to someone who needs one. That's recycling. Start by asking why this stuff is going to the landfill and I'm sure you'll learn that most of it doesn't NEED to go there in the first place.
How many of these computers needed to be purchased in the first place? Most personal computers are wasted (in terms of production). I have actually seen people upgrade PC from 486 class machines to the latest item because the 486 was "slow". When asked what they used the computer for: "just email". Those people are putting a lot of crap into landfills needlessly, and that's not just individuals, it's corporate too.

So, because the type and length of my service to my country is different from yours, I'm somehow a REMF? Love that attitude. That's the same liberal attitude that my fellow servicemen encountered when returning from service in southeast Asia. Nice warm attitude there, not the kind of attitude one would expect from someone else who had served.
But I have reason to doubt your alleged service or even citizenship. The country I am refering to, FYI, is a democratic republic with a capitalist free market economy. It is NOT a democracy nor is it communist.
Perhaps labor unions would be a good idea in a democracy. I dno't know. I am unable to think of an example of a country which is a true democracy at present or of one that lasted long enough to have had to face those issues.
Last point: I did not call for your expulsion, nor did I claim that right or power. I simply pointed out that you have the option of leaving this country to live and work in a country with a government type that would better accomidate your pro-union attitude.
Maybe I'm biased because I served my country. Maybe.
But the idea of citizens in this fine country inviting socialist practices makes me want to puke.
You want unions, move to a socialist country. In any case, step aside and get out of the way because there are some of us with some pride left who have work to do.
You're right, I don't understand. If it's such a unique application that there isn't already a similar open source application available (which could be cheaply customized), then such a cost justification should be easy to make.
Either way, you pay. You pay someone to develop it as closed source software (i.e. you buy the package) and every department, agency, whatever who uses it has to pay and pay again. Or you can pay someone to customize an open source application (or in the rare instance, write an application from scratch) and then you make it open source so that any other agency or department can make use of it if they need. It should be easy to see which approach has the greater public benefit.
Not that government should be about public benefit or anything. I wouldn't want them to start bucking a trend now.
So you're saying that our government should pay someone to write closed source software instead of open?
I don't get it. Other than for very specialized programs (like launching ICBM's), why should the government be in the business of software development at all? Most of the programs the government uses are available without charge (things like word processors, spreadsheets, email, etc.).
Even if the government purchases these programs off the shelf (i.e. paying for closed source software development) they still have to have people on staff to install and maintain them.
In any case, a quarter billion dollars is a lot of friggin money just for software. Even if you argue that the government should be paying for closed source software development, that's too much.
Again, I feel the money would be better spent training the next generation on engineers and scientists who will contribute to our GNP directly and indirectly.
I guess I missed something here. Just what was the pressing need to create this position anyway? Are the citizens of this country really requesting that our government meet this "need", or is the government doing this just because they think they can?
Another thing that steams me, and this fuels the fire, is that our government seems to think that we own, control, and rule the internet. Yeah, right....after all Al Gore invented it so it's ours to do with as we please.
I suppose it would be too much to ask that the quarter billion be used to fund the education of more engineers and scientists. It seems to me that is a greater need and would actually do more good for our country.
But then what the hell do I know. In a government of the people, by the people, and for the people I am just one of the people.
When land mobile services are being crowded and spectrum demand is at an all time peak, what do you suggest we do? It's not like more spectrum is being made available to land mobile users.
Oh sure, we could bid on it. But we would only be beat out by the Verizon's, Cellular One's, and Nextel's out there.
Imagine trusting your public safety communication to the phone company who can't even keep thier billing system straight. Oh wait, you don't have to imagine. It's in the near future.
These auctions are killing off land mobile as well as amateur radio and are driving up the cost of doing business in the process. Soon a small contracting business won't be able to license its own radio use but will have to pay some mega-corp for air time.
So whine all you want about losing hobby frequencies, but don't point the finger at land mobile. We feel the pressure too.
The FCC has been using auctions for the last few years to insure that small business can't clutter up the spectrum. A few more years of auctions and it will only be large, multi-billion dollar corporations and the FCC's job will be much easier because the will just do what those few corporations tell them to do.
Small time guys like me who want to make a buck in communications will have only one choice: pimp services for the big corporations. We won't be allowed to run our own systems nor will our customers. We won't be allowed any spectrum to create and develop new services either because their auctioning off the amateur spectrum as well.
It takes 3 to 4 times as many radio sites for PCS carriers to cover the same area as cellular. This is because of the higher frequencies (higher frequencies don't travel as far). That's quite a capital investment.
So these PCS ads that claim you won't drop calls must be talking about well covered major metro areas only.
for everytime someone proposed flying a plane or using a baloon for a communications repeater. It just isn't going to happen. I would love to have a list of names of the investors on this cuz I've got a bridge for sale.
Reality: You either put a bunch of stations high up on mountains or buildings or you put one expensive station in orbit. Either way your cost for coverage is going to be less than some manned aircraft system and far more reliable.
The last thing we need here in the land of the free and home of the brave is union activity.
Anyone who feels the need for a union should move to a country with a government style that is more in line with union thinking. Socialist governments.
And where I live we've got plenty of National Socialists that I would love to send along with you.
Union members and NAZI's, I've got no use for either one except maybe as bad examples.
Right. And I'm suggesting that just because you use the computer to produce a musical recording it does not have to be "computer generated beeps" or anything of the sort. There has been some nice stuff done with guitar, sax, pipe organ, etc.

No shit?
Would that work for Zamphier too? Techno fucking pan flute!
That's all nice Cap'n Kirk, and I know that funding is tight and all.....
but the fact that even with tight funding they've only put $30,000 to the task tells me that nobody really ever expects this to pay off. Ever.
