  1. Simple solution for VOIP Phones on Texas Attorney General Sues Vonage over 911 · · Score: 1

What I've recommended here is not to use 911 at all. Simply program a speed dial for the 911 business line, their 7 or 10 digit number. That way you'll get in and you get the right PSAP every time.

VOIP phone providers don't transfer calls over a 911 trunk anyway, they are forwarded to the PSAP over a regular telephone line. All that a VOIP phone customer needs to do is obtain that number and program it into their "phone".

I have had several VOIP phone providers call me about this so I know their working to provide 911 service for their customers. That's awfully damn nice of them, but it's not their responsibility.

Your personal safety is your personal responsibility. You should know if you have working 911 service and, if not, make it happen. If you lose a life because you dialed 911 and it didn't work it is no different than if your smoke detector didn't alert you to a fire because it didn't work. You have to test these things and know that they work.

It's not all that hard and I don't think I've ever spent more than a half hour on my federal taxes. My state (Idaho) taxes are a nightmare and usually takes me two hours to figure all that out.

Most people in the US make it a much bigger deal than it really is. That's usually because they're either trying to find legal ways to get out of paying taxes or because they're doing something illegal and trying to cover their tracks.

  4. Re:Why? on DC Power distribution - Nix the Transformers? · · Score: 1

The problem you're having there is that most computer power supplies are designed and built pretty cheaply.

When I designed our new 911 center I eliminated all of the wall warts by using battery backed communications power supplies. The equipment room has redundant supplies for -48 VDC, +28 VDC and +14 VDC. I did build another power supply (actually two to be redundant) that takes the +14 and gives me +9 and +5 out for some devices that required those voltages.

All of this though is communications grade stuff that is filtered, clean and built to last. It wasn't cheap stuff.

Your right, ATX supplies do fail with quite a floor show and they do so on a regular basis. Most of them are crap.

  6. Re:Not a problem as I see it.. on Australian ISPs Required To Report Child Porn · · Score: 1

Maybe it's not at the moment. But the 'legislative creep' you speak of has already begun.

Some people just shoot the messenger. In Australia they ask the messenger to snoop around in the content of what they carry for their customers.

We know that someone working for an ISP will already have invested in a set of skills that is specific to data networking. That person will also have to study and train on a routine basis to keep up with that rapidly changing field.

Now Australia demands that these people become investigators or officers of the law. That would require a different set of skills. So this can go one of two ways.

The government will require a technician working for an ISP to study and train to work as law enforcment in addition to their other required skill set. That way they can properly discover, investigate and handle violations without harm to innocent citizens or violating the laws themselves. This will be difficult cross training for those who already have difficult skills to maintain.

Or the government will not require any training in the law for these people and the will run fast and free with the law. ISP's will be held accountable for their customers content which will require them to snoop on and turn in their customers.

No matter which way you look at it this is going to have a negative impact on the public trust. It will likely also raise the cost of the services provided by the ISP.

This week we task network technicians to battle kiddie porn. Next week we'll expect librarians to turn in people for checking out chemistry texts because those people might build bombs. And soon we'll not only make it legal for your neighbor to peek in your windows, we'll hold them responsible for what you do in your own home to make sure that they do so.

  7. Re:Not a problem as I see it.. on Australian ISPs Required To Report Child Porn · · Score: 1

Sure, not a problem. Next will be a requirement to turn in anyone who the ISP suspects is Jewish or black. Then the government can deal with them.

Once again we have big brother enlisting the help of your neighbors and your business associates. This worries me far more than someone involved in child porn. Sure, exploitation of children is a bad thing but IMHO big brother is worse.
