  1. Re:The people I know who have one or more of these on Amazon Says 100 Million Alexa Devices Have Been Sold (theverge.com) · · Score: 1

I treat Facebook as if everything I put on it in public or private is exactly like putting the same information on a bulletin board in a busy mall and just assume it is being shared far and wide. But jokes on them, I am very boring and so is what I share on facebook. I've not installed Facebook's apps and assume it tracks me all over the web. Facebook comes with a price and I understand that price and feel at this time it's worth paying.

But with Alexa I don't feel I have enough choices as to what I share with it. I don't also feel comfortable having the largest retailer in the world know so much about me and be able to always listen to me. If I started building on it and using it for home automation then I may not be able to easily remove it from my life unlike Facebook. I don't think the price for Alexa is worth paying.

I don't really get why Uber would give a shit about autonomous vehicles. Their entire business model is based around an asset light setup. They don't own or insure the cars that Uber drivers use. Going to autonomous vehicles in any substantial way would require a very hefty capital investment AND it would ruin their (bogus) argument that they aren't a taxi service. It doesn't make much sense to me.

I am guessing Uber believe if they don't go the direction of autonomous vehicles now they will be left behind when their competitors do.

Germany is an export economy and so does very well out of a weak Euro. It is in Germany's best interest for countries who drag down the value of the Euro to not get kicked out as it lowers the cost of Germany's exports for the rest of the world. If only strong export based countries used the Euro then it would increase the price of those countries exports for the rest of the world.

  4. Why do people in Indonesia live near Volcanos? on Indonesian Erruption Forces Evacuation of 1300 · · Score: 1, Informative

Indonesia is a very corrupt country from heads of government to local school teachers. There is no planning permissions needed to build a house. Indonesians just clear the forest, put up a house and bribe government officials away if they start asking the right questions. There's also 172 active volcanos in Indonesia and 300 million people.

Also the local population tend to have a great deal in faith in the protection of God from natural disasters. When natural disasters strike Indonesians tend to believe it's punishment from God. Boxing day Tsunami which hit North Sumatra near this volcano is still seen as punishment from God for western ideas and practices, such as drinking.

This Volcano is 25kms away from Lake Toba, a very beautiful fresh water lake with many tourist resorts.

Could it be possible the NSA is pushing the UK and Australia governments into forced censorship in order to reduce the amount of traffic the NSA decrypts and tracks? Opt out of being censored, added to a highly monitored list.

I can see the benefit of banning VPN access to most subscribes for the NSA when they are looking for bad guys. Just seems suspect that two countries with very open pornography laws are forcing default censorship on their ISPs. Two countries who co-operate greatly with the NSA on spying. There are far more countries with less open pornography laws that are not censoring the internet at all.

The point of the primary job of government being to protect private property is rather confusing for me. I would hope the primary job of government is to protect the citizens of said country above all else. Then providing stability (avoiding inflation, corruption, war, armed gangs roaming the streets) and then protection of private and public property.

But I am an outsider looking at the US.

Otherwise, as pointed out, once the warrently period has ended it would be impossible to repair, service or buy consumables for such products.
