I completely agree! Why not OpenOffice? It's free and it rocks. The only problem I have with it, is that it's support for formulas in text is not great at all, but I use LyX to overcome that problem.
From the Register: The patents in question this time around cover "parallel instruction computing", which, as the name suggests, allow multiple processor operations to occur simultaneously, in parallel, increasing performance. Intergraph claims that PIC is fundamental to Intel's IA-64 architecture, which uses EPIC (for explicitly parallel instruction computing).

Could your mom install it? No, but she wouldn't be able to install windows xp either. Especially not on a machine with linux pre-installed.
The different distributions exist to make installing linux more easy. And with good package management, installing applications is not difficult. It's even easier than installing applications on windows.
As with many linux apps, one's it's installed properly, it's very easy. My roommate is no wizard at computers and she uses linux on her laptop everyday. Mostly for e-mail, www and watching dvd's and avi's.
No problems at all once I set it up for her. And if the distros would do their job a bit better, multimedia support in linux wouldn't be such a big problem.
I'm really curious how SuSE's 8.1 will use mplayer. It's finally in the distro.

[X] Easy support for video files and DVD - mplayer
I've installed mplayer on two SuSE 8.0 linux machines, and it's amazing. You can see DVD's, AVI's and even look at at microsoft media streams. e.g. 'mplayer mms://streaming.omroepbrabant.nl/live1'
And how easy do you want it? You can easily make an icon on the desktop that starts mplayer on the dvd currently in the drive.
WinSCP is freeware, which means that everybody has a permission for using, copying and distribution of this application for any reasons and without any payments. This program mustn't be modified and all files, with which the program was obtained, must accompany the program.
First of all, Microsoft has ZERO history of suing companies in order to destroy them (See Apple for an example of a company that uses the lawsuit as a weapon). And even if they did, so what? Like I said, money and guts. They'll lose.
That's a funny thing to say with respect to this post! Microsoft suied Lindows over their name.
Oh I forgot to mention, since I'm living outside Wageningen, the city doesn't think it's viable to give us cable, so while we have this fast internet connection, we can only receive 3 television stations with our antenna.
And for the Dutch readers: yes this is the place Volkert vd G used to live. I didn't know him, and he left long before the fast network came, so its is not bad for your mental health.
As a matter of fact, we do have a newspaper and a coffee shop 100 metres away. I also have a small beach and a big garden. Too bad I'll probably have left in a year. I'm sure I'll never be able to adjust anywhere else. The housing is not really like a campus, since it's independent from the university. So you can keep on living there after you finish you education.
Since Wageningen Univerisity can offer such a good connection to the internet, I don't see why the commercial providers can't. It must be due to their monopoly position on the last mile.

According to Google, that quote's from George Bush Sr. If you've got a sound byte to back you up, I'll believe you.
This is what a lizard would do to a butterfly.
M$ would be wiser to choose a seal as a logo animal.
M$ might not shy away from fighting Linux, but the consumers might shy away from a dirty-playing monopolist that does not act in their interest.
There's a reason TeX is still at a version less than pi and has been for years.
Yes, the reason is the version numbering scheme converges to pi.
because of higher prices caused by piracy
You can't be serious. The prices haven't risen because of piracy, but because M$ can ask higher prices and most people will still buy M$ Office.

I agree completely.
These people would be much wiser if they'd port linux to all these different PDA devices. That's a hot market right now.
I don't want to have to download (7x650) 4.550 GB of data just to try out the latest linux distro.
:^)
Don't worry. SuSE doesn't allow others to distribute their iso images.
In a few months you'll be able to download the SuSE rpm's you do like.
That's not all. Here's a list of what else is missing:
I guess we'll have to wait for 8.2.
I think Linus is getting fat.
Why preach to the converted?
Obscenities are just a small problem. What about irritating and ear-damaging sounds, such as home-build high frequency sounds or the Corrs.
Check out the gatos project for support for you Ati Rage LT.
Works for me.
