  1. The blame game. on Calling Software Reliability Into Question · · Score: 1

Sorry if this is redundant, I didn't have time to check every comment :). Anyways, the one problem I see in this is finding who to place the blame on. So many things can cause failures these days you better be damn sure the people you are sueing are actually to blame. Was it hardware the failed. the OS, a 3rd party library, or another application altogether? I think a lot of people wouldn't do the required research to firugre out the exact cause of the problem before they started throwing lawsuits around. Most people already don't on other issues...

Problem is all these new users don't like it being different, so for some oddball reason they wanna ditch windows so they can recreate, well, windows, and they're influencing developers. If Linux was just a sub-par windows clone, why would anyone want to use it? Well... hang on for the ride, that's exactly where we are heading.

    3. Computer Science. To imitate the function of (another system), as by modifications to hardware or software that allow the imitating system to accept the same data, execute the same programs, and achieve the same results as the imitated system.

Look very closely at that third one. Allow me to also point out that the "Wine Is Not an Emulator" is not what WINE actually stands for despite popular belief that it does. Anyways, to further solidify WINE's status as an emulator, lets look up the word "imitate."

imitate Audio pronunciation of imitate ( P ) Pronunciation Key (m-tt)

    2. To copy or use the style of: brushwork that imitates Rembrandt.
    3. To copy exactly; reproduce.
    4. To appear like; resemble.

Now please try to get over the means by which wine accomplishes its end of emulating windows. I remember when another emulator called UltraHLE came out, and people tried to claim it was not an emulator because it didn't follow the classical means of emulation. It used high level emulation. Despite that word emulation being in the type pf emulator it was, people still tried to claim it was not one. Emulation is an end, and an emulator is the software that produces that end. VMWare may be in a class of emulators called a virtual machine, but it is still an emulator. WINE may emulate windows by "translating windows system calls to X11 equivalents" (which btw is extremely vague), but that does not make it any less of an emulator.

I'd much rather use that than a small black and white LCD only capable of displaying numbers and letters mounted in a 5 1/4" drive bay. You'd of course have to end up writing your own software for the status display, but if you did this could look extremely slick, especially with custom software to drive a nice remote control, like ATI's RF remote.

Now, if you really want it easy, buy a card with multiple hardware outputs and software support to match. The emu10k1 is a fine example of this. I can have up to 64 apps accessing /dev/dsp simultaneously.

Also, Alsa does software mixing in the drive if you don't have hardware support for it, i.e. esd in the driver. So please don't bitch about lack of solutions if you haven't thoroughly researched the topic.

Dimension and time wouldn't be out there, as those are part of our universe. You really get into some freaky concepts when you turn your thought in this direction... if nothing existed, if there was no reality... there would be no shape, no form, no time, no space... nothing is not a strong enough word.

Think about the point in making a plan and keeping time in general. The whole idea is that you decide to do something while your in contact with a person, and then time and location is the only means you have of "contact" after that. You show up at the specified time and place, and hopefully the other person did too.

New technologies obsolete that kind of thinking, and provide us with the flexability of being able to do things on a whim and while on the move. It's a step foreward, not backward.

The most major annoyance i have is when I'm hanging out with someone, having a good time, and they get a call and an invitation to go somewhere else. Its just overly intrusive and disrespectful

There will always be rude people unfortunately. This is a problem with their attitude than the new technologies. I'll make plans with people while I'm already engaged in something else, but I'll make the plan in a way that doesn't sell short the current situation. IF I PLAN to do something like that then I let someone know, like "hey I got something comin gup, but I don't know when.. wanna chill 'till I gtg?"
