True that man. Jon Katz gives a bad name to leftism. This kind of impractical, unrealistic, idealistic bull shit unfortunately ruines a lot of the appeal for progressive beliefs. While I hold myself as a liberal, it's hard to believe I have to sit in the same camp as this moron.
My kind of liberalism is based on personal responsibility, reason, and practicality, not holding some superior view where we just attack the other side and have some righteous attitude about how we must help out every fucked up person in the world.
Who really cares about someone's grammar? If it's a good point, it's a good point. Don't knock someone's argument just because their grammar is sub-par. Find somewhere else to be nit-picky and petty.
But I do agree with your argument about computers. So what if people can afford better computers? Is it there fault that rich people are rich and poor people are poor? I didn't know there was a big sign in America that said "you are responsible for everyone else". Personally, I care about one person, and that's me. Just because poor people have no initiative, responsibility, or strength to make themselves into better people, doesn't mean I'm responsible for THEM. I didn't know America was turning into communism!

It's unfortunate that the ACLU and a few other's are the only organizations remaining to fight for our freedom. Especially since we have new technology evolving so quickly, we shouldn't let our rights be taking away at a time when they're most vulnerable (ie on the internet).
I think as proof by this Kaplan decision and many others too numerous to speak of regarding technology, the judicial system in America has a major problem: understanding.
Unfortunately, the majority of judges in our current system are over 60 and have little to no computer use, and therefore a lot of the current issues regarding computer related things appear fuzzy to them.
It kind of reminds me of the 1996 DMCA bill, which was said would have never passed if Sunny Bono was alive, because he would be the few people who would have really realized the consequences of such a bill. Similarily, would judgements like this be handed down if instead of Kaplan ruling on the case, someone with a fair amount of computer knowledge had been?

Not that I'm disappointed. I think those are pretty nifty pictures (especially the one of the LA riots and the rodney king were the best), but I expected there to be a little more, hrm, diversity in the choice of history.
