When I resigned my commission I had to see the post commander(!) of my installation in order to explain why "America's Best Leaders" were leaving the military. My performance reports were marked "2", even though I was told I deserved a "1", but they wanted to save the rating for someone who would need it later on down their career. 1) You apparantly host dot.kde.org and post regulary, though RH 'sponsors' GNOME. Anyone at redhat have any comments towards you? Hate mail? Unexpected nerf ambushes? Do they sign you up for GNOME mailing lists? Do they make fun of the 'KDE guy in the corner'? (BTW, this is what makes open source so cool, the freedom to choose what you want).

    2) Any of the ideas from bero linux make their way into the main RH distro? I know Mandrake did, but since RH is mostly conservative, I'd like to hear your opinion.

    3) Does it piss you off that every complaint about the gcc in RH is answered on your website and you have to post the URL for the last 2 red hat releases including the betas? (that must suck).

    4) You get paid to work on Linux, that rocks! What do you think needs the most attention?

(e.themes.org, I think even all ye console purists can agree that the right E screenshot can convert anyone.)

This is what I learned, in a nutshell of course:

    1) Teach them to use the console method first, then, when they've done it a while, show them the GUI way, that way they'll learn how it works.

    2) The multi-user thing coming from windows is kind of hard to get over. "Why do I have to be root to install this?"

    3) Guy calls it all linux, not GNOME, KDE, Red Hat, Ximian, mozilla .... this was weird to me, because I've being doing it so long, because when he got frustrated, it was like "fscking linux" instead of "fscking gnome, unstable mozilla, stupid rpm." It takes a while to explain how all those things interact and come shipped with a distro, remember they are used to everything coming from one vendor. "No, you can't update KDE with Red Carpet", "Oh, that sucks..." ... you get the idea.

    4) He needs to know his hardware, regardless of distro - everyone knows this, I hope. :)

    5) After he got a hold of it, he found linux easy to use and maintain (I used Ximian GNOME in this case). Because it's different doesn't make it hard. Once you get them to 'think outside the box' (hate to use that phrase), learning linux can be easy and fun.

    6) Nothing will help you learn linux faster than teaching someone. I consider myself an average linux guy, this experience taught me alot, and in the end, we all want to learn something, right?

    7) The most important IMHO: The simple things are hard, the hard things are easy. Yes, you don't need to defrag, virus scan, worry about privacy issues, 'registration', or worry about BSODs, but yes, it will take us 2 hours to get yout ghetto ass CD burner working right .....

Red Carpet still has some issues, Evolution isn't even close to being done, MonkeyTalk is/was awesome, but try finding a Ximian guy in there sometime, just don't bother the other _4_ users in there all asking for support.

Example: Red Carpet is STILL stuck with mozilla .9.1, but if I get .9.2 and install manually, nautilus stops working, but if I install the new nautilus, it won't unless I downgrade back to mozilla .9.1, and it keeps telling me stuff isn't installed that is ... I don't understand how apt does this so well, yet this slick looking "super update" tool from insists that my stuff is broken. And you just know somebody is going to start using --force and --nodep and screw stuff up even more.

This reminds me of the big 'Push' craze. "Everyone stop what you're doing, push is the future! The regular internet will die!" Who cares, keep doing what we're doing, making a better OS for US, not for the MASSES.

Mandrake is bleeding edge and all, but it has a real QA issues that absolutely suck. I couldn't believe 8.0 was released, especially with all the problems that plagued the beta. Stuff just stops working in Mandrake, in both KDE and GNOME, and it was beginning to drive me insane. The RH stuff is older, but it works better. While Mandrake does have some things that make it a better 'desktop experience', there is nothing I can do in Mandrake that I can't do in RH. Mdk just makes it easier, and that's fine because that's their market anyway.

Now, DrakFont is definately awesome, and I applaud them for continuing to push the envelope. MandrakeFreq is an excellent idea, as well as cooker, but I will continue to use RH until I actually find a stable version of Mandrake.
