A huge part of the corruption in the US is our Legal System. I am thoroughly convinced that our legal system as it is now is such an ingrained part of our society and government that we are doomed. It will only get worse and worse. It feeds itself. Most "commercial" software must do everything (or multiple things) and by nature are complex. But to your point, what would YOU be willing to pay for, and can you give examples? Everyone likes to pick on MS Office, but I use it at work, and it does a ton of stuff all pretty well. Integration with Outlook and other MS apps is not all that bad considering the scope. But, that's big and complex, and has a UI. You're making a comparison of apples and tomatos.

Forgetting Linux apps completely, I'll pick an app that does fit your criteria... Irfanview. Small, robust, fast, and well worth the price - free. I am sure with a little thought you can come up with some too.

And someone fat fingered an email along the way, said "we need to get this damn table product OUT THE DOOR" and a couple of years later, we have the Surface.

You're right, there's no Lady Gaga or Brittney Spears licensed under Creative Commons. But there's is a lot of really great music.

And to be fair... nowhere did *I* imply that Britney Spears or Lady Gaga are good music.... in fact, I really don't know who Lady Gaga is, or why everyone is always referring to her in conversations. I don't watch E! or read People Magazine.... I know it would take about 10 seconds to do a search and find out... but honestly, I don't care and it would be a wasted 10 seconds.

Meh. I've tried listening to public-domain music.. I just haven't found anything I really like. But really, the same could be said for most music.

The reason people use certain songs are because they are well known. And there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, there is nothing wrong with using copyrighted music. The key thing is "having permission to use it" and that is what is broken. This just points out yet another reason why the ability to buy/sell copyrights to songs (or anything for that matter) is just plain wrong. It goes against the entire point of copyright.

The system is broken, this is just another hole in the dyke. It will be plugged, another will appear... rinse, repeat. There will always be ways around silly copyrights.

I don't remember if it was in the video driver, X, or kernel updates... but every so often it took fiddling with to get it right.

Maybe it was my video card at the time - Nvidia GeForce4 MX440. I switched to an ATI, but had bigger issues with drivers. Of course, this was all a couple of years ago.. things always just seem to get better and better with Kubuntu.

In the past, all the way back to RedHat 5.something upgrades have killed me and I've had to do a fresh install. I was always running 2 monitors, and that seemed to be a never-ending battle re-configuring X. I've gone from RedHat to SuSE to Mandrake to Kubuntu.

Having said that, I recently built a new computer with Intel quad-core and ditched the 2 monitors in favor of a big flat screen... so I did a fresh install of 9.04 64-bit Kubuntu. I've been loving it! There have been a few things I didn't care for, but even KDE4 is OK, and Compiz is great.

    Still crossing my fingers. :)

Unless of course you were one of those people who jumped on the IT bandwagon 10 years ago because you heard you could make good money at it. If that's the case, then you didn't belong here anyway. Believe me, I've thought about getting out of it too, sometimes it just isn't fun anymore. But I think it could be a lot worse elsewhere, so I'm staying put.

Actually, I've strayed from my pure IT roots in my job - I'm a manager now. I manage a testing team. It has taken me a while to develop the skills at it, and to NOT see everything as a technical problem... but it's been good. I went from Unix shell scripting right out of college ('93) to system testing, then a few other technical testing roles, learning about process improvement, management, etc. etc. The money situation kind of took care of itself a few years ago when the economy nosedived. I'm making less now than I was 5 years ago. But I am very happy with my job, and I have stayed true to my tech roots... Linux has been my OS of choice at home for 10 years now.

But in the end - do what YOU want. Sometimes taking a huge leap is a great thing, and can change your life.

I don't understand why these two things are mutually exclusive. I have found that often times the most competent people aren't the ones who think they know everything, it's the ones who are willing to try and learn. There's no reason to not be both of these things. Try being the person who's right and nobody likes.... see how that works out for you.
