Duke Nukem Forever Back In Development

An anonymous reader writes "'Always bet on Duke.' It seems he was right about himself, at least. The longest, most storied in-development game in history seems like it's finally going to be released by Gearbox Software sometime within the next year. 'According to Pitchford, Gearbox began finishing Duke Nukem Forever in late 2009. "Clearly the game hadn't been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created," he says. "The approach and investment and process at 3D Realms didn't quite make it, and it cracked at the end. With Gearbox Software we brought all those pieces together. It's the game it was meant to be." The game is currently expected to ship in 2010 although given its history Pitchford is understandably reluctant to be more specific.'"

Maximum downward deflection, at center span: 10.8 ft = 3.3 m

Live load capacity per lineal foot: 4,000 lbs. = 1,814.4 kg

As an example of how the Bridge is built to move, during the winter storms in 1982, the main span bowed approximately 6 to 7 feet

The three maximum deflections noted above at the center of the suspension bridge are due to the following loading conditions:

      1. The transverse deflection is due to a sustained transverse wind load. The maximum transverse movement of 27.7 ft is based on the maximum allowable longitudinal movement of the wind locks at the support towers;
      2. The maximum downward deflection is due to a condition with maximum live load on the center span, no live load on the side spans and maximum design temperature to elongate the main cables; and
      3. The maximum upward deflection is due to a condition opposite to condition 2 above, with maximum live load on side spans, no live load on center span and minimum design temperature to shorten the cable length.

Also, do we really have to go through the "evolution vs revolution" cliche debate? First of all, by what measure?

DN3D's engine was a huge leap over Doom, but it certainly did make some improvements. For example, it allowed for jetpacks, making it feel closer to actual 3D. They added interesting things such as being able to see from another point of view, within your point of view (security cameras and monitors).

The game also included much more interactivity with objects than other games of that time periods (in a time when player interaction with objects usually was mostly limited to doors and barrels).

However, one area that I might say that DN3D was "revolutionary" was in the developer support for the modding community. Unlike Doom editors, which were made by the gaming community through reverse engineering, 3D Realms actually freely released their Build editor for DN3D. To this day, DN3D still stands among a tiny minority of games that include game editors to encourage community made mods.

Plus, the game had a lot of style and humor (as alluded to in my earlier post).

So, yeah... If you take away things like crawling through air ducts, fun and interesting items like holodukes, shrink rays, and jet packs, the humor and parody, a developer released level editor, increased environment interactivity, style, then yeah... it was nothing but "Doom + boobs."

      - DN3D had an inventory system for items (night vision, jetpack, medkti)

This meant that you could do things like have a figure of eight track where the two tracks crossed but they were still separate in the game world. Neither was on top of the other, but they were not accessible from each other, in spite of occupying the same location in 3D space. This was used in some of the later levels to produce impossible maps, which aren't possible in engines that do real 3D.

A few things that I really enjoyed in Duke3D, although I'm not sure how novel any of them were:

      • Mirrors. You could see Duke in the mirror, you could smash them (and get a retort from Duke about bad luck), and you could bounce shots off them with some of the weapons (e.g. shrink ray).
      • The freeze ray and shrink ray. Weapons that just disabled the enemy, they didn't kill them. These could (temporarily) disable almost any enemy in one shot, but then you still needed to kill them, so there wasn't such a strong ordering of worst to best weapons.
      • Pipe bombs and laser trip mines meant that you could lay elaborate traps. You could detonate the pipes with a trip mine, so you could get a really big explosion by combining different weapons.
      • Jetpack! Quake had a 3D engine, but Duke3D was a 3D game. There were lots of fun things that required you to fly for a bit. The fuel requirement of the jet pack meant that you had to be careful when using it, but combined with weapons for creating traps it could be very effective. Not to mention fun - strafing a load of players with the shrink ray from above was great fun. You get the kills, but you got to cause complete mayhem in the middle of a deathmatch.

Well, kind of... the rule for floors above other floors was that all of the vertices had to be at different coordinates and no sides could match up with the floor above/below. So it wasn't hard to do a bridge over another section, but a multi-floor building was out.

Multi-floor buildings had to be simulated. You would lay out individual floors on different parts of the map, then use teleporter effects to move the player between them.

The other big issue was that most monsters could not leave the polygon that they spawned on. I don't remember how they did the flying pig cops, I just remember the issue with the basic static spawns and that you needed to be careful laying out the floor cells.

Disagree. They could probably make a pretty decent game using whatever assets the game already has, engine and textures, models etc, but spend the remaining time left doing voices story and level design. Throw in a pretty good multiplayer mode and you have a solid game. I know it may not be feasible if the assets are too "last-gen", but I assume they at least wont follow what I keep hearing was the cause of the long dev time to begin with: the over-arching ridiculous desire to be as bleeding edge as possible. If I recall, the teaser trailer that came out within the last year or so didn't look so bad (can't remember if it had gameplay or only cgi), certainly not bad enough to require new tech.

It was mildly transgressive for its inclusion of pixelated strippers, and had a few fun mechanics (remote trigger pipe bombs?), but otherwise wasn't terribly unique even for its time. Since then, we've seen a glut of much prettier shooting games, with much more refined play in both single and multiplayer. Honestly, for a while there I wasn't sure whether Perl 6 or Duke Nukem Forever would come out first, but now that Rakudo Star is out, DNF can't be far behind!
