Lost Star Wars Scene In the Wild

Someone managed to get a clip on-line of the lost Star Wars scene from Jedi where Luke is shown crafting his Lightsaber. The full clip will apparently be included on the Blu-ray box set expected to come out in 2011. Hit the link below to see what is circulating. It's not much, but it looks real. Can't wait to see what they include in the 2015 version.
Update: 08/16 22:44 GMT by S : Lucasfilm complained, and YouTube took the video down.

Here's a thought, don't buy it! Why this obsession on Slashdot with not paying for things? Would it suddenly be okay if he released them free? I'm sure he's spending a bundle remastering them and adding content so it's reasonable to charge. The viewing public isn't a charity. I have far less trouble with this than I did with the original Star Wars laserdisk licensing mess. I believe there were five versions. Some were wide screen others had Dolby. The problem was since they licensed each version to a different company no one copy had everything you wanted. I didn't bother buying one until the box set came out. If you don't want to waste your money then don't but some people will want them so why stop the release just to avoid annoying you personally? And no I don't have any plans to buy them. Release the original first film in blu-ray and I'll buy it in a heartbeat. It was still the best of the lot and I'm not a fan of the last three. The new scenes stick out like a sore thumb. Cleaning up the old garbage mattes is fine just don't add CG shots. The reason the old VHS and Laserdisk version had visible garbage mattes is they did a one light on the gama. The blacks were too light so it showed every garbage matter around the ships. It was the studio going cheap. Things like that should be cleaned up but the rest should be released intact. You can see that in the RotS as well. Lucas is a terrible writer, and you can see how he got far in the script before realizing that he hadn't given enough reasons for Anakin to turn bad, so suddenly, instead of a gradual build up of evil, which he had seemed willing to do in AotC with the Anakin killing the Sandpeople bit, he rushed the whole seduction thing into what looked like a matter of hours or days. Hence, none of it makes a lot of sense, Anakin literally turns to the Dark Side like someone would flick a switch.

They say the best Star Wars was The Empire Strikes Back, because Lucas's involvement was at its lowest ebb. A compelling and sensible plot, real character growth (by pretty much all the characters), all of the standard compasses we measure a good story by, were present. The deeper Lucas reaches into things, the worse they get, and because Lucas was most definitely the man in charge in the prequels, they, despite all the special effects, story-wise just plain suck.

In Revenge, Anakin's susceptibility to Palpatine is again demonstrated when he kills Dooku at Palpatine's order. Anakin is consistently shown as insecure and arrogant, which Palpatine uses to alienate Anakin from the rest of the Jedi. Anyway, I think there are enough plot points in the movies that lay enough ground work to make it reasonable to turn Anakin. Not like a switch - for years Palpatine carefully maneuvered Anakin to the balance point, and at the end it took just a tiny shove to flip him to the dark side.

And then at the end of Return, Luke is able to tip him back to the light side.

I suppose they could do something with it and all the other bits floating about to come up with something pretty similar to the original theatrical release but GL has repeatedly avoided doing that. Every time there is a new version put out it gets butchered somehow - too much noise/grain removal, over the top re-colouring, pointless and really bad looking extra bits (Jabba in NH etc.)

They also seem to love inferior technology - even the latest remasters were only done at 2k resolution when the industry standard is 4k, moving rapidly to 8k. You might not think that matters as 2k is still better than 1080p BluRay but the lack of resolution is one of the reasons that the noise removal results in a flat and fake looking picture. The scenes with a lot of sand are a good example. The sky and the sand dunes are smooth and artificial looking and the sharpening filter they used got rid of the original slightly soft focus.

The first DVD release was actually terrible quality. The Laserdisc version had a better picture as it was made from the edited master copy before it deteriorated. IMHO it is the best available copy in existence.

If you know Star Wars one-sheets (standard size movie posters), you know about the "Happy Birthday" poster that was issued in May 1978. It was sent out to theaters that were *still* playing Star Wars a year after its release. Those prints were battered, torn, faded, etc., when they were returned to Fox, to the point where they were not usable any more.

As a former projectionist, I can also tell you that there was a habit amongst projectionists and theater owners (it still exists, but not so much, as it is monitored much more closely) to cut out favorite scenes from the print for the theater to keep. Sometimes entire prints would not make it back to the distributor. They'd get "lost" along the way, or the wrong film would be in the can once they were returned to the distribution point. You'd better believe that this happened a lot more with popular films like Star Wars. Hell, if theaters were fined $10,000 for not returning their print, it was worth it to them.

And if we're talking the ORIGINAL original Star Wars, it was the nine (yes, only 9) 70mm prints that were sent out to theaters on May 25, 1977. In this version, there are several audible differences in the soundtrack--most obviously Aunt Beru's voice was not dubbed by another actress. People who claim to have seen Star Wars "the day it came out" are probably full of crap unless they lived in a major metropolitan area with a theater that could project 70mm--and had one of those 9 prints. The general release 35mm version didn't come out until two weeks later, and by that time Lucas had already been tinkering with it (Aunt Beru, dialogue on the Death Star, dialogue in the attack on the Death Star, and more).

So yeah, it's pretty much a given that any existing prints would either be long gone or not usable. What would hoped to be preserved would be the original negative, but even back then it was clear that they needed to strike a new negative to keep Star Wars preserved. That is the April 1981 version, the first with A New Hope added, and which is the basis for nearly all home video releases in the 1980s, HBO and network TV showings, etc. There are even more changes in this version, all documented in the site I linked to above.

In this era of beautiful DVD and BluRay remasters and reissues, people assume that the studios just go in the vault, find a good print and make up some shiny new copies. To make those good-looking new prints, they need the original negative, but most of the time that hasn't been preserved. More often than not, a combination of an existing negative, a positive master, and existing prints in good shape are all combined to make the DVD digital master, which is then preserved--and sometimes new 35mm prints are struck from this new digital master.

This clip never made it into the films because it serves no purpose and would drag the pacing of the movie down (even more so then the jarring re-edited dance number). Where would the clip be put in? As all good Star Wars fans know, the camera always starts in space on with the bad guys (at least in the original trilogy, apparently the director of I, II and III didn't get that note). So this scene would need to be sandwiched between Darth Vader threatening his commander to step up Death Star construction and the droids approaching Jabba's palace. But all that would do is ruin Luke and his Green lightsabers big reveal. If his face is shown even partly here, there is no reason he should be shrouded in his hood and cape when he enters the palace. There was the big reveal of Luke in IV where he steps in close on his farm, then in V we see him ride in close to the camera and pull off his scarf and in VI when he pulls off the hood to talk with Jabba. Besides, three years of planning went into rescuing Han. With all that happened in that rescue it would seem to me that he shouldn't be building his lightsaber an hour before he has to go threaten an interstellar mob boss.

And what's with Vader's terrible dialogue. "Luke, Join me, it's the only way". The only way for what? Yes yes, probably the only way to rule the galaxy as father and son, but it's the beginning of a movie, the script needs to provide a little back story.
