This sounds like viral advertising to me... Hey, did you guys know Metallica has a new album out called Death Magnetic? I promise, THIS one doesn't suck.
I heard one of the songs from it on the radio. It sounds like some band trying hard to cover old Metallica.
Hey Lars, download some Clutch and listen closely.
I agree with your definitions... that is how I've always thought of them.
AFK means "I'm away" and doesn't mention returning.
I didn't get the point in the story... I never thought of IRL and AFK and interchangeable... because you could meet someone IRL in front of a keyboard.:)
I get torrents of TV shows that I miss. I have a DVD recorder, but in all honesty it is easier to download it and burn it to a DVDRW to watch later.
I also download kids shows/movies. I have downloaded movies that I own on DVD, because it's easier and they are good quality. Why? Because I have a DVD player that has a USB port, and a 120GB hard drive connected. If you have kids, you know that switching out DVDs is a pain, and they get messed up. I put them all on a hard drive, and it's SO much more convenient.
There ARE legitimate uses for downloads, although I know there are people out there who just want it for free. But instead of embracing downloads almost a decade ago like they should have, the RIAA (and now the MPAA) are still fighting it. I don't know if it's out of pride or ignorance, but downloads aren't going away.
And the MPAA/RIAA are still around, and they've been making money this whole time... so.. what's the problem?
I remember when Farenheit 9/11 came out.... I was in a video store renting something, and two guys in line were talking about it. One of them said "I wouldn't watch that commie bastard's movie!"
I really wanted to tell him that I saw it and it had nothing to do with Communism... but if someone is stupid enough to make that statement, there isn't much I can say to convince them. I am sure he wasn't referring to ACTUAL communism, or even had any idea what that is. He was being a a good little jingoist.
I wondered why they have a paintball mode too... but you know what? It's fun! I downloaded and played it. Here is the description from the docs:
Paintball
Paintball mode! You will be given a paintball marker and must tag your opponents with paint. Tagging an opponent freezes them in their tracks for a short time, but once they are un-frozen they cannot be tagged for a few seconds. However, they can still tag you so get moving! 5 tags will knock a player out and they must respawn.
It's actually pretty cool.
It will be interested to see how the game progresses, if there are community maps made, etc. They have an "editing" mode but I haven't tried it out yet.
According to experts 30 years ago, the was simply no way we could produce enough food for 5 billion people. Now we're doing it for 7. These professional pessimists have always underestimated mankind's ability to change, adapt, and solve problems. They've always underestimated our capacity to make things happen.
Unless, of course, we have millions of starving people on the planet.
I don't understand why people want to dismiss the concept of global warming. I mean, the ways the experts say to prevent it aren't BAD things to do. I don't see the harm in reducing our carbon footprint, or recycling, finding new energy sources, or just being less wasteful in general. Jeez, can't we spend money on things that don't kill each other or just make us fatter and lazier?
I don't believe that it is the under-performers being cut. Maybe they are cutting areas that are losing money, or aren't making as much as other areas. That could be due to lots of factors, not just performance.
That "get rid of the bottom 10%" BS has to stop. I know someone who manages engineers @ Intel. When they went through cuts a year or so ago, he had just started managing his team. It was raise time, and he was told he couldn't give raises to his bottom performers. He had hand-built his team, and he argued that he didn't have any bottom performers. He fought for his team, and he won - he was able to give them all raises.
Now if he has to make cuts, he'll make cuts. And he'll have to do it strategically based on lots of things. If a company just uses a blanket statement that they are cutting 10% of the staff as under-performers, they are either full of shit or are managed piss-poorly. You don't just cut across the bottom in your entire company. That's why there's re-orgs, and shifting of people, etc. You do want to keep your best people, but you also have to understand when to change the structure of things.
And I can tell you from talking to my friend, and because I interviewed at Intel in the past, they analyze EVERYTHING and are very data driven. It sucks that people are getting laid off, because there really isn't anyone out there hiring. It is the harsh reality of this economy. Hey I know, let's spend a few trillion more dollars by invading another sovereign nation for no good reason, that'll fix things.
In fact, I'm willing to bet that there's more hammer and tool related hospitalizations than gun hospitalizations...
Well, if you're trying to weigh out which is "worse" then you should also consider the positive uses of each. But you aren't trying to do that at all, are you because you already know the answer to that.
And before your blood pressure spikes and you start spouting more hackneyed quips and amendments at me, let me just say that I don't have a problem with gun ownership. But the fact is that violence has permeated the American society as OK, and sex/drugs are seen as evil. That's where this thread started, and as is usually the case with gun owners, the conversation gets steered towards making guns and gun violence seem ok. (the real problem isn't the guns themselves, it's those who worship them)
There's a huge difference between criticism and ridicule. To be frank, most of us went through that kind of stuff growing up. Very few of us turned out anti-social.
Social networking sites don't count.
But hey, I'm anti-social, I don't care about most people in general. I hate small talk, I am not really interested in what other people do, or what their favorite sports team is, or what cute thing their kid said. I don't expect them to be interested in what mine said. I don't high-five strangers, or anyone for that matter.
And that was your parent. This story and all these comments are about a woman who played a TV character. Totally different circumstances.
Sorry, I have to rant here a little....
I have never ever been a fan of Star Trek. I don't get the fanaticism in any way, with this or anything else. About the only thing I can compare it to is that I am a huge fan of The Simpsons, ever since it came on the air. I don't have a ton of memorabilia (I think Pez dispensers and the Monopoly game) and I certainly don't talk about it incessantly and insert it into every conversation. But if the voice of *insert character here* died, it certainly wouldn't make me sad. I mean, the passing of anyone is sad, but it happens constantly.
I don't get bent out of shape when someone I don't know dies. Stop deluding yourselves into thinking you have remotely any kind of "relationship" with a TV character.
Deinitely Tuxpaint with all the stamps installed. My 3.5 year old loves it, and it's really very good.
I am surprised a lot of posts are suggesting Linux-only games... I could have sworn that you were looking for games on XP. It sounds like Knoppix Game might not run well on the machines, or I'd suggest just including that. Maybe DosBox bootable CD?
Other suggestions which you probably already know: Irfanview as the default image program OO.o (which you already mentioned) Firefox with AdBlock Plus GIMP and/or Picasa Google Earth
Sure, some people may get it. But unless there's a NASCAR team with "gratis" in one of their logos or slogans, or if ESPN uses the word, people won't get it.
I get all kinds of very puzzles looks when I wear my shirt that says: Libre Gratis Linux
I learned BASIC first... then assembler. I think it would be hard to jump right into assembler. BASIC gives you the ideas of how things work, and some of what NOT to do.:)
I was in CS in college back in the late 80s/early 90s. I know things were different then, but I learned BASIC, Fortran, Assembler, Pascal, C, C++, Lisp... probably some others I can't remember. I do remember avoiding COBOL like the plague. I took an OS and hardware class, wrote a bootstrap, etc. I am sure many here had similar experiences. I can't say I use really ANY of it now, I chose the path of testing once I got out of school, and have since moved into project management. But it has always helped me to have those languages / experiences under my belt. It's much easier to communicate with developers if you can understand them and speak their language.
I am sure it might work... but I work for a large bank. I schedule and attend tons of meetings, and I have to work on shared MS Project files. I have issues with Project, as do others who use it. I'd love to try another project application, but bottom line is that my employer only allows certain applications.
My employer has standardized on MS Products. While things MIGHT work with other apps, the fact of the matter is that there are many other issues involved with having apps work. There's support, installations, maintenance. As much as Outlook is a thorn in my side as an email client, the integration between Communicator/Outlook as they have implemented it is pretty good. I haven't seen any other calendar integrations that work as well, but I suppose they could exist.
I work for a large bank, and I work from home. I schedule and attend LOTS of meetings, with people all over the country. Having it integrated with the mail client is very very useful, as much as I hate saying it.
What do we do about Powerpoint, Xcel, Visio, and the other MS utilities? Please don't act like OO is a feasible alternative for these programs. Other than that I would be a huge fan of this.
Install the alternative application of your choice. I work with and collaborate with a Microsoft world 100% from linux and/or BSD. The only thing that's ever hung me up was creating Visio diagrams. Reading them is no problem. I read/create Powerpoint presentations, read/create/share Excel spreadsheets, Word, you name it. Oops, I forgot Access... I just never have to deal with it (I make it clear that I won't have anything to do with Access).
Microsoft Project? Essential Outlook? (I HATE it for email, but I couldn't do my job without the calendar integration)
I've used Linux at home exlcusively for years (since Redhat 5.2 to be exact) but for work I use Windows. 1. because I don't have a choice, and 2. because it works for what I need to do. (software project management)

I thought you were lame for knowing this much about the show... then you suggested hacking the voting system.
*facepalm*

and have "kid mode" teach them the reality of violence. If you are playing the game and you get killed, it does a "sudo rm -rf /" on your system.

enjoy it while it lasts. :)
That's not the only issue here.
Why does the set "More than 2,000 shorter words" include the one longer word as well?
And don't forget - the word "be" can be typed with only the left hand, yet it wasn't.
hmm, didn't know about rev... but I've used "sort | uniq" a lot. (shows unique lines, duh)
Some other things I use all the time are
"grep -i" (case insensitive), "grep -c" (count), "grep -v" (non-matching)
There's probably more elegant ways of doing some things I use, but you use what you know.
xargs is always good to know.
ls -lahtr is a command I use all the time... shows files reverse sorted by modification time, or S instead of t for file size
... of incessant, smug, loony bitching and ranting by the Libertarians.
For several reasons...
1. It works, all my apps work.
2. I have a dual-monitor setup with an NVIDIA card... I want to avoid that reconfiguration hell.
3. I still fear the upgrade. I've never had a flawless upgrade on Linux, and I've been trying various distros since Redhat 5.2.
I'll get to the latest Kubuntu someday... maybe this will be the release.
