Once the rust sets in on steel it's very hard to stop sure they will stay standing with no maintenance and be and eyesore for longer than wood.

They do work, a two to one oversubscribe ration has little to no effect five to one is going to degrade your performance. Cost is also a factor you can get 4 port pci or pcie sata cards for under $20 on ebay the port multipliers tend to be more than that. Assuming 4 sata ports built in videa on a 7 slot motherboard that's 32 root sata ports more than you can fit into a reasonably sized priced etc case. ZFS or linux software raid on top of that. A 4 port card fails replace it and your up and running again (yet to have one fail). Just buy the green drive with the best GB/price at the time. Once you get into external chassis etc prices start going way up.
Either way the pricing is horid. I buy transit all the time and 10gb Ethernet is down under 30 a mbs from the most expensive tier 1's. Metered pricing does not reflect the real cost of providing service, since you need to provision for peak usage + redundancy. The actual cost of doing so is pretty static, if you have anything like a sensible design upgrading bandwidth is just one time costs.
Now I would love to see the government run a pure fiber competitor, two strands to every house can get us hundreds of gbps today. There is no tech or bits the various vendors can optically cross connect at the CO. 40km is the normal distance for short reach optics and your can go a lot further with better optics. Regenerative gear is pretty agnostic and well established in undersea work it might be an option for more rural areas.

There is no tech or bits the various vendors can optically cross connect at the CO. 40km is the normal distance for short reach optics and your can go a lot further with better optics. Regenerative gear is pretty agnostic and well established in undersea work it might be an option for more rural areas.
