Thanks for the corrections! Although basing the structure of the database on the nature of the queries sound like it could rapidly turn into a nightmare - unless you still have a DBA saying "no, you cant do that" : )
While I agree that the Win32 API has gathered alot of cruft, I do agree with Joel that Microsoft are shooting themselve in the foot by trying to drop it.
For instance, I frequently use my 5 year old version of Photoshop, but see no need to upgrade. Nothing Adobe have added since then has tempted me to upgrade - and the price is also a major disincentive. So what is Longhorn going to offer me I don't already have? In fact, they seem to be saying I need to replace all my software, so why upgrade!
Apple already made this mistake with OSX, and had to reimplement OS9 to keep their user base happy. I'm sure Microsoft will end up back-pedalling and reimplementing Win32 into Longhorn.
Funnily enough the Windows version of Slashdot is Slashdot. It's also the equivelent site for Mac OSX, BeOs, Amiga... you may have noticed that Taco & friends don't wear the full strength Linux blinkers.
Java is one of the worst languages you can learn programming on right now. It's proprietary, it's dogmatically restrictive, and it leads to alot of incorrect assumptions about the nature of the business of programming.
Check out anything by Richard Dawkins - probably the best explanation of evolution is in "the Selfish Gene". "The Blind Watchmaker" is good too but I suspect it was written in reaction to some of his creationist critics, so if you have a creationist tendency you might find it a bit hard going. Good stuff anyway.
Teletypes & and punch cards are input media, not programming "systems". All operating systems, since the advent of terminals, have permitted a CLI - long before Unix came along. Perhaps he meant scripting language. I suspect IBM's JCL has been around longer than Unix. You also sound like you haven't spent much time in non-Unix environments.
From the article: If success is measured by longevity, the Unix command line is the most successful programming system in history.
You can tell the author has spent his entire adult life in academia. If sucess is measured by longevity, COBOL & Fortran are the most sucessful programming systems in history.
I think you will find you are free to re-interpret a copyright idea into your own words (although if you do it in an acedemic paper and get caught, you'll lose points). I don't think plagiarism is illegal, unless you try to profit from it, when you might get sued by the original author. I think you might find that many creators consider plagiarism to be flattery. I don't recall Tolkien suing every fantasy novelist, even though many of them used the world he created as a basis for their own.
Following the link from Mirriam-Webster to Britannia probably give the best definition:
Documentaries can deal with scientific or educational topics, can be a form of journalism or social commentary, or can be a conduit for propaganda or personal expression.
Given the broad variety of beliefs currently held throughout humanity (espicially some of the cults), I'm sure some people would adopt the aliens religion, and would rapidly split into different factions arguing about the true interpretation of those beliefs!
Did you enquire whether the professional solution is available for rent?
Alternatively, why not print up the words on paper and place them alongside the relevent exhibits? This has the advantage that more than one person can use it at a time, and it's cheap, leaving cash free for possibly better causes...
Unfortunately "liberal" changed definition in the USA during the McCarthy era, when describing yourself as "socialist" was likely to get you run out of town. So "liberal" was substituted and has stuck. In other parts of the world it still means something closer to a milder form of libertarianism, with more of a social conscience.
Heh, I viewed it on Windows box with no soundcard, had to tell it "no, I don't want a Media Player download". I think the videos are overkill, simple text would suffice, or at least offer it as an alternative to the video. Still it's an interesting development for a normally uncommunicative corporation...
Well you're certainly getting alot of flak - I applaud you for:
a) an interesting experiment b) a sense of humor c) non-malicious intentions d) the ability to cause a bunch of hypocrits to run around squawking in self-righteous indignation
I therefor commend to you the title of Honorary Troll 1st Class, and recommend you to the ranks of the world-wide Kibology conspiracy ; )

SQL: Standard Query Language for querying relational databases. "SQL database" is a meaningless phrase.

Oh, and did I mention it's proprietary?

ah... no. It tells you that the thread running the animation is not hung. What is happening in the other thread(s) could be a whole different story!
The Unix model has the virtue of simplicity

the game version of "Monty Python & the Holy Grail" did not suck, it still does not suck, and it never will suck, for ever and ever
Amen
Not any more - I've been boycotting the pubs since you can't enjoy your cloud of noxious cigarette smoke with your liquor any more :(
Remember what happened to Rome?
They got away with it for 500+ years. Not so silly after all...
lalalalalala... I'm not listening....lalalala

I suspect your problem is whether you are philosphically allowed to view this site. Removing your Linux zealot goggles might help.
but why did they hide the "Browse" option at the bottom of a drop down list in the Search GUI? Now that's poor design.
