Actually, JPL was founded by a notorious satanist who was murdered in an explosion. And the initials "JPL" are jokingly referred to mean "Jack Parson's Lab".
Part of this post is true, part is false, and part is opinion. Can you tell which is which?
Perhaps you're thinking of Arch Obeler's "Chicken Heart" episode of Lights Out. Bill Cosby did a bit about how he freaked out upon hearing the story on the radio as a kid.
Robert Heinlen makes reference to the actual case somewhere in one of his Lazarus Long stories.
Apparently, the actual experiment has been repeated many times. Although I can't track down the longest lived one.
Roll up your sleeves and get to work, mutherfukka!
I absolutely despise the attitude our society endgenders that you have to sit around and wait for the "professionals" to get around to serving your needs.
They expect you to dial 911 and wait for the police to (maybe, eventually) show up when someone breaks into your house. God forbid you take responsibilty for your own safety and plug the bastard with a.45!
If 1 person in 100 on/. set up their own link, that'd be 50,000 links. (of course, we'd need people who can connect us to a backbone -- I'm thinking universities here.)
Still, I would rather have a standard for a fast way to connect any device to my computer rather than USB2/firewire + SATA. Why not just work on cranking up the speed on existing standards instead of reinventing the wheel (with a kludge based on ATA)?
What ever happened to Reflection Technologies? They had a working design using a acoustic resonant mirror and a row of LEDs that seemed like it would be cheap to manufacture.
Last I heard they were working on a color xvga model and had a deal with Omron, then they sorta disapperared.

Did you choose that just for this story?

I'm gonna call BULLSHIT on that one unless you can back it up with references.
You probably liked that Will Smith movie with Gene Hackmen in it.
Sadly, no.
That model was involved in one of the worst disaters of the Soviet space program. And given their track record, that speaks a lot.

I would hope to God that they would have a mechanical failsafe that deflected the beam away from your eye if the electronics failed.
Of course, there's a lot of places that build stuff the way Microsoft does these days. As opposed to the way DEC builds, er... nevermind...

Damn, Microvision is running neck-and-neck with the bitboys in the vaporware stakes.

These weenies don't know from real pirates. real pirates shoot and kill people and take their physical property.
A long sight different than some kid who makes a copy of a song.
I think it's a shame that the word " pirate " has been so trivialized. Sort of like happened when the media started using the term "hacker".
"$680,000 / $450,000"
So our elected representives are not only whores, but cheap whores at that.
(Not that I can come up with the money to buy my own congresscritter. But as things go, that's popcorn money.)
