What about a culture where people are allowed to "abort" children up to the age of 5 (short story I read years ago).

That's probably "The Pre-persons" by Philip K. Dick. An excellent story, the very first of his I read.

How is it I never see "Virtual Light" by William Gibson mentioned in conversations like this. An interactive inforich real world is enough to make me think glass is cool.

The only arguments I've seen along these lines have all been one flavor or another of 'I need to work at home. I have kids there, or a dying mother. I don't have any choice but to work at home. So if I can't I'll have to quit'.

How about "I was hired when this was allowable, live in another timezone, and don't want to uproot my family to get into the office"?

    I guess you're fired then.

Philip K Dick already came up with this concept in his novel "Ubik" All your appliances need to have money inserted in them. Want to open the fridge door? That's a nickel. Want your place cleaned? Gotta pay the building to send in the cleaning robots. Want to leave your house? Better pay the door a nickel.

I'm with you on this one, it'd be nice if people could turn their gadgets off and watch what they paid to watch. I caught a showing of Pulp Fiction in theaters earlier this year (having been too young to see it in 1994). It was incredible, except the twinkling lights of people playing with their cell phones. What's the point of going to a movie if all your going to do is text and otherwise generally be a douche bag?

If they [the US] started adding tariffs on everything they'd be violating NAFTA and we could just as easily do the same back. Although it would probably hurt us more than them.

If Canada follows through and adds 20 more years to our copyright we may as well give up our status as a sovereign nation and either become the 51st State or join the European Union. Foreign interests have no place in Canadian law. I wrote my e-mail of complaint - and so should you.

If we can get people to Mars without frying them in solar radiation I suspect we could probably set up bases on Mars without frying them.

Not to mention if you're going to use a tool designed to kill people, you should be fearing for your life. If you fear for your life you aim for center of mass. If you're really fancy you do 2 in the chest and 1 in the head. When you fire your weapon you should mean it. Don't shoot to injure or incapacitate. Shoot to kill.
