Snide remarks aside, I feel your pain, as stuff i thought I backed up either ended up not getting backed up at all, or the backup media fucked up. Of course, when its my personal backups, I consider it a PEBKAC error;)
If I recall correctly, the biggest show stopper of CF-style cards is that it has a finite number of writes before it craps out, but I could be wrong as I havent heard too much about it. Then again, we're talking about IF all these shortcomings were worked out.
It's a good thing, but not for today. A $6000 "add-on" doesn't fit with a equipment that cost $1000 or less:
"Oh, I bought my new car for $1000 and spent $6000 buying a new wheel... it's so cool:P "
Amen! that was my contention, I too cannot justify buying add-ons that are worth more than the equipment (well except printers and ink/toner, cause those consumables can kill ya.:P)
The first remarks i hear is "why would anyone buy a $5999 8GB memory card......when they could buy 2 4GB cards, 4 2GB cards, ad nauseam...who could possibly use that much space...That could store a lot of PORN and DVDs (mayhaps porn DVDs....im guilty here:P)"
But I digress, lets consider other technologies that we all thought we could never afford, and consequently never use. About 10-15 years ago, wouldn't our 256MB+ RAM and 30+ GB HDs run in the thousands or even millions for that stuff then. Give it time, and it will hopefully be cheap for all;)
Somewhere, a George Carlin sketch is referenced...

The Cheese Slicing Laser

"In a country where you can buy cinnamon dental floss, cheese in a spray can, and edible womens panties, are people really breaking their balls to save nine cents on a fucking phone call?!"
Well, now we can add cheese cutting lasers to that list.
It seems I have been quite lucky up to this point as I habitually leave my laptop in the trunk of my car - which is just over the gas tank (duh!).
You may want to give it a once over if you currently use lithium-ion batteries."
Considering that I usually keep my laptop in my trunk, i can rest knowing that I can pull it out and replace it with some safer items like a gasoline canister, some fireworks, my blowtorch and some booze (it is new years eve, after all;)
You know, it's funny you say that, cause my parents did the exact same thing, only it wasnt a 386, it was a broken Atari 5200, a bunch of old broken 2x4s, a 5 gallon bucket of dried up paint, some old rags, a Commodore 64:( Dead ), some broken tools, and a cracked easel (spelling?).
The funny thing was, I went to get some food soon after and when I got back, they were gone!!
Wow. One page every few minutes. And users complain because their laser printer takes 20-30 seconds to warm up...
I know what you mean and when you think about it, aren't there times that we still think "God, can't this thing go any faster?!", knowing full well that had we used said device (eg. printers, modems, CPUs, storage, etc) say 5, 10, 15, 20 years ago, we would be waiting a LOT longer than we do now.
It's a matter of perception, much like watching a boiling pot.
It really pisses me off how overzealous you Linux people are. The GPL is there to protect freedom, not make it so companies are unable to use it to do business. Calm down for a bit and see what's going on before you react liek this next time.
Actually, from what I understand, the BSD license is more appropriate for businesses who do not wish to disclose their modifications.
just like how all the software companies should be held liable for thier faults. The only thing is no matter how good a programing job one does there is always a way around it.
I couldn't agree more, there will always be someone around to circumvent or exploit exisiting code for their own purposes, be it good or evil. While I don't like playing the blame game with software companies and software, they should be liable for any damage their software (intentional or otherwise), especially if it interferes with emergency or mission critical systems. Of course, maybe I'm being too idealistic, or Polyanna as it were...
Personally, I have a cell phone and I use it for... making telephone calls! No stupid wireless web, messaging, taking pictures, or whatever in the hell people are doing with phones these days.
I agree, I dont need a fucking phone that has everything, including the kitchen sink (although games are a plus:) I'm hesitant to upgrade my phone for that very reason, granted I'm not all that attached to my current phone and provider. I never could father how one could use a typical cell phone for instant messaging (AIM, Yahoo!, whatever) as its a royal pain in the ass to type stuff in.
A computer is good in it's most basic uses, and a phone is good. All of those stupid ipods/pdas/superphones/etc aren't worth it.
However, my stance on this is that to SOME people, the PDAs, iPODs, etc are worth their time, BUT I think people like buying those superphones as it were, only for the "gee whiz, look what bitchin' shit i got here" factor.
Absolutely. It's not a matter of if they can do it, but when they will do it.
Hell, people have had their dial-up sessions hijacked because they were fooled into clicking something that disconnects them from their ISP and redials to an offshore number silently.
Japan should charge the phone company for each fake call to recover costs.
Oh yeah, THAT'S a real good idea, all the phone companies have to do is suck up the charges to save face and then pass the bill onto their customers as a anti-spoofing tax or something like that.
If companies are held financially liable it will force them to do a better job of programming and testing software.
You know what you need? a good backup plan :P ;)
;)

Well, if you going to pit the Death Star against Redmond, it's only fair if you match it up with this ;)
LMAO.....touche...fucking hilarious =D

we just need to get some frickin sharks to put the frickin lasers on their frickin heads!!
Wow! Thats cool. I wonder then if there is a way to turn my vodoo3 into a Video Card...
Well, you'd have better luck jury rigging a hampster powered Etch-A-Sketch than a Voodoo 3
You'll want to add some firearms and ammunition to your party supplies.
;)
Are you mad???!!! Those might be dangerous to haul around...might cause an explosion
If that's the case, aren't you far more likely to win the lottery several times than have your laptop battery explode?
;)
well, if that's the case, at least you'll have enough lottery winning to replace your laptop when it does explode

We're still in shock over it lol
If an mp3 price is sliced by 10% and no one hears it, does it make a sound? And do they have "falling prices" signs all over the website?
I get tired of a place that is supposed to be a type of technical forum being a place where poltical rhetoric and nonsense replaces facts.
;)
Ah, you obviously must be new here, all we do is fill this forum with nonsense...and thats the closest we come to making sense! You'll learn
Real men use PEEK, POKE, and GOTO!
;)
They still do! They just employ it on other people as opposed to computers and chips

But I used a Commodore 64, you insensitive clod!!

Maybe they've all bought licenses from SCO and therefore don't have to comply with the GPL?
In other news, DVD players will now go for at least $699, more on that after these commerical messages.
*cue DVD player commercials*

*Chortles* Right...
2D?! Wuss!! I'm waiting for laptops that are small enough to be 1D!! ;)
Well, let's keep fighting the good fight, brother ;)
