To add insult to injury, many of the enhancements in commercial software come from the customers in the first place
Personally I thought that ALL enhancements come from the customers... Otherwise, why would you write software at all ? Just for yourself ? But in that case you would be a "customer" as well as a "developer"... (Scratching personal itch, as per Bazaar and Cathedral)
I wonder if Sony could create the whole bunch of characters and/or items and just sell them through an auction site, just to make money... Scary thought, I know, but anyway....
I'm sorry, but whoever built the character already paid all the subscription fees. He may still profit from the sale (gets more money from after selling than paying for subscription), but it seems to be a slightly different issue. No ?
ipfilters (?) -- unless you compile in ipchains support...
It's actually iptables.
I built my firewall around it while ago...
2.4.0-test10 or something...
In an unrelated note, one of Pentagon officials voiced his excitement about new super secret weapon system that is going to be used as an anti-terrorist measure. First tests are scheduled for early next year. "We're going to crush that evil terrorist organization led by Laden once and for all ! They would think that sky is falling !".
However, we were not able to get an explanation about "falling sky"; "it is a secret, you know", we were told.
Also, we were informed by one of our sources, close to Pentagon, that there seem to be a huge demand for hard working hats among US military officials.
However, we still don't know either these two facts are related.
In an unrelated news, NASA said they launched a new web site dedicated to the history of a series of their Pioneer probes. It can be reached at
http://www.pioneer6.orbit.sun.space.com.
However, the site seemed to be down during the first several hours after it's launch. We contacted one of the NASA representatives, this is what he told our reporter: "That site doesn't have enough bandwidth to handle thousands of requests from people all around the world. We also had to ban visitors that came from a popular discussion site Slashdot - there were just too many of them".
To the question if NASA is planning on enhancing the communication channel, we were told that this is impossible at this time.
Some people who were able to get through to the site, told us that it was very slow, download speed did not exceed 16bps.
"You should not put banners on top of that page - it's slowing my browser to a halt", one angry web surfer said in an email to NASA.
But it appears from the note that BugTrack may not redistribute _Microsoft's_ bulletins.
You can write your own and send them out all you want.
One thing wrong with MS approach of publishing advisories on their site only - narrowing circle of people who would read them. Instead of following one reliable source of security related info, BugTraq, I'd have to spend twice as much time going through 5-6 differend sites.
And hey, MS should care about people patching their machines/being informed about bugs. The buggier their products are, the less people will use them. IMHO, as usual:)
Guess what I'm doing right now, while reading this beautiful story ? I'm actually compiling 3dfx's release of XFree86 with Voodoo4/5 support built in... Coincidence ? Maybe... And maybe I should have bought Nvidia or something.... But then there would be nothing to compile.... Technology/choice/life is tough:) But it seems people like it anyway...
IMHO, people are using this "tech rush" as an excuse to abuse their employees... But if this excuse goes away, there gonna to be another one (two, three, doesn't matter).
But not all employers are that evil... Somebody are just clueless...
It would be nice if we could teach them... Maybe not by making a union.. There should be another way.
It's interesting that, while talking about developers' egos, Mr. Greenspun doesn't touch the point of "manager's personality"...
IMHO it's a very important side of the problem.
If a manager has "personality of a dead fish", it doesn't matter if they buy all grand pianos in the world and put them in an enormous play room.
Developers are not going to be happy anyway...
Or maybe I'm just missing his point on this... (Gotta read the article again)
I've sent a copy of this article to my manager, hope he'll read it:)
Segway also used to be known as "IT". Pronoun all right.
Let's hope China will not try to beat this "unofficial record". I just paid mortgage for my house !!!
One hand + one leg...
You can even type without hands at all.
Very nice.

Huh ?!? Of course not, according to Mr. Gates
But at the same time 640k was supposed to be enough for everybody... hmmm

I guess you had to debug it some more...

Are there any mirrors of microsoft DNS records around ? Wait... nevermind that.

...I'd like an order of chicken fried rice. Yes, everything together. I HATE watching my "Web Site" 6:30pm show without food.
Thank you.

Not unless they add some more mouse buttons

I think our best bet it to have multiple, redundant, independant replicas
:)
Mirror often, mirror early

Now I know what I want for Christams !
My current UT server is just not fast enough....

Whenever I hear a comment like this one, a vision appears in front of my eyes:

but, regardless, I play the same way....
