I certainly don't have to use XP's built in firewall. I could still buy a 3rd party firewall. But, why would I? I'm happy that Windows is improving. Sounds like you're just interested in spreading FUD.
Don't buy DRM laden music. It's very simple. I don't understand what the bitching is all about. You know exactly what you're buying when you buy it. If you don't like DRM, then just don't buy it. Nobody is being forced to use iTunes. I don't use iTunes for precisely this reason. Besides, I prefer to patronize my local used CD stores.
I can't help but disagree. XP has a firewall built in. Windows 2000 did not. Are personal home use"rs paying a bit more for lack of competition" in firewall software? I'm actually saving money because I cancelled my zone alarm subscription.
Don't worry. I'm still getting a PS3 with all of the bells and whistles. I don't know who who what "Lik Sang" is, nor do I care. There's absolutely no (well thought out) reason, that I can see, to boycott Sony.
Now Apple, that's another story, altogether. Between their sweatshops and the price gouging and their blaming MS for virus-ridden iPods, I won't spend a nickel on any Apple products.
Acting like criminals? Oh, you mean like Apple selling products with viruses pre-loaded, and saying it's MS's fault? Very few companies handle this kind of thing correctly. Tylenol did in the 1980's with the poisoning scare. Most companies act the way that Sony and Apple did.
I don't think that anybody with half a brain would feel threatened by RMS and his followers. I think that if anything, they were laughing at him because he's so ridiculous.
Why not get a PC for $25 at your local thrift store and use a $100 copy of Windows? I mean really, it's like going around your ass to get to your elbow. This is just dumb. If you're developing for Windows, you have to be a real masochist to try to do it on another platform, especially when you can use any ol' PC that you find laying around. It's not like a Windows PC is exotic or hard to find or expensive.
It's not characterization if it's true and he's public about it. RMS is a socially stunted freak that is starting to make the people with all of the money nervous.
Call me nuts, but I think that a magazine like Forbes has a bit better perspective than zealot. Besides, Forbes doesn't have anything to lose. This is what they do. The analyze companies.
There will be problems, but you pay them the money for it, so it's their problem. If you buy a toaster, and it catches on fire, and the company says, "It's the fault of Taiwan Wire, Inc. who provided us with faulty wire", who is going to be blamed? It's the fault of the toaster company, because they used defective materials. In this case, it's the fault of Apple, because one of their vendors/manufacturers screwed up. People aren't concerned with the thousands of steps it takes to get to the iPod, nor should they be. That's what manufacturing companies do. They put together hundreds if not thousands of components together, and the final product is what you're buying. You're not buying wire, and an LCD screen and buttons and batteries and paint and plastic. You're not buying transporation from China to the US. You're not buying trucking services. You're not buying packaging. You're not buying pallets to put the cases of boxes on. You're not buying warehouse space. You're not buying ink to print the packaging. You're not buying silicon for the circuit boards. You're not buying iron to make the steel headphone jack. You're buying an iPod.
Again: who cares? It doesn't matter what they use to make their products. The point is that the end product not only should work, but should NOT cause additional damage to other products that people already own.
Who cares how it happened? It's Apple's problem. It's Apple's fault. End of discussion. Apple's comment was childish and absolutely un-called for. Apple should apologize publically, announce that they will improved their QA, and move on.
Let me go ahead and burn karma to get this out of the way:
He's lying! He's a paid Microsoft shill! There's no way that it's as good as he says! It must be rigged! It's probably the new iPod and he thought it was a MS product! He's brainwashed by the DRM! It doesn't run Linux!
Well, if you haven't noticed, the interface is what people see, and what they notice. Linux has no consitent interface, and what is there is a nightmare. Hence, no Linux on desktops. Macs have a very very pretty, shiny interface. Hence, people are willing to pay a premium for their Mac's. And, obviously you're not aware of what's going on in the back end either, because Windows has been changing, WHILE STAYING BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE for quite a long time. They just moved from ActiveX/Com to.Net for much of their framework stuff, for example. That's pretty significant.
2. That's good for you. Now, would you mind letting me know when any of my critical business software will run on a $25 Mac that I can pick up at the local thrift store?
... it's for the damned Indians that American company managers seem to think are a good replacement for American people. I swear, they speak perfect English, but I can repeat myself 10 times in a very clear, understandable way to Indian call takers, and it just doesn't register with them.
Specific case: I use Miva Merchant. All of their support is Indian. I called with a technical problem (where are the instructions for this section of software), and I ended up giving up because none of the Indians could understand what I was talking about. I even asked a few of them if they knew what "Miva Merchant" was because I would ask them about this, and it wasn't in their script, so they had no idea how to handle it. I tell ya'... the English is there, but the brains aren't. So maybe this new software could help them. More importantly, maybe it will help ME get my problems solved!
Has the ability to boot and run Linux off flash made you "re-think that whole Linux thing"?
No, not at all. Running a headache off flash is still a headache. I use my desktop machines for work.
They'll be replaced by a medium that has a much higher MTBF for writes.
All that means is that your drive slows down. I'm talking about not having to worry about annual mechanical failures (bearings burning out, heads hitting the platters), which I'll bet is the #1 reason for downtime.
Not really. Flash memory is not all that fast, and a lot of boot time is spent doing other things. On all my machines, most of the booting process is concerned with checking and initializing hardware.
I don't care about booting. Desktops generally don't get rebooted these days too much, anyway. If they do, they're for scheduled updates in the middle of the night. I'm talking about data access speed.
That is actually reason enough for me to re-think that whole Vista thing. With partial flash drives and eventually 100% flash drives, the last major component of computer hardware failure, namely, all of those closely moving parts in a hard drive, will be wiped out. Wow. That sounds pretty cool.
Demand that law enforcement do their job and start putting these kids in jail. Sure, I know that current law enforcement is absolutely clueless, but that's not our problem. All the feds would have to do is stop the goddamned "war" for a day, and they'd have enough budget to hire and train some smart people who can track these people down, and put them in jail.

You're absolutely right. My fault.
Whose fault was it for using a partially-supported standard? Did somebody at MS hold a gun to your hand and demand that you use PNG?
I don't think that anybody with half a brain would feel threatened by RMS and his followers. I think that if anything, they were laughing at him because he's so ridiculous.

"protecting freedom"? "defense of your liberty"? Jesus, you sure do sound familiar...

Oh, please. Spare me.

If you think a chunk of metal and plastic is "sexy", then perhaps you need to GO OUTSIDE more. I find human women sexy. Call me crazy, but I do.
Actually, I've read in many places that it DOES support Ogg. Can't verify, though.
Let me go ahead and burn karma to get this out of the way:

1. This isn't a comparison article.

I can't tell whether you're trying to be funny.
I'm completely serious.

Oh yeah, and it'll be fast as hell, too.

Hey, I can dream, right?
