Actually, I'm amusing myself by picturing the /. editors trying to clear the backlog of "Tiger Release Date" submissions sent in by every Mac user in the world. Some submitting it multiple times just because its sooo easy to do with a Mac.

They could be clearing the backlog until after Tiger is released.

At which time they will be flooded with submissions about Tiger review articles. Maybe I should send mine in now.

I can picture them being very anti-Tiger by mid-May.

I thought a big part of Core* was to create basic frameworks that apps at all levels could use, including free/share-ware.. The general idea being to raise even the lowliest of apps to having an impressive base set of functionality.

In fact, from what I've been told, apps like Photoshop are the ones that won't use CoreImage, because Adobe already has their own equivalent they've been optimizing for years. Why would Adobe use FilterX in CoreImage, when they've already written the same filter and need the solution to be cross-platform?

AFAIK, Apple has never shipped "just an updater" for a paid update (of course my memory gets fuzzy when you get back before System 7). Its always been the full OS (which comes on DVD these days). That was always a nice touch as apposed to the install DOS-install Win 3.1-Upgrade to Win 95... process involved with a certain other company.

Even with the "free" ($20) upgrades some have gotten in the past, Apple has shipped the entire OS on the CD(s). Its just that the installer checked to make sure you have the previous version before starting the installation process (you could still do a full archive and install). In fact, it didn't take long for people to figure out the trick and image the upgrade CD to disk, remove the bit that checked for the previous system, then burn the "fixed" image to another CD.

But the point is, its not going to be any slower.

What's great about it (and many of the things Apple has done) is that it uses the fastest available hardware to do the job.

You don't have a GPU that can handle the job, Altivec will do it.
Don't have Altivec, the core of the CPU will do it.

On other systems, either you have to have the hardware "required", or each developer has to handle checking for hardware and writing/optimizing all the code to handle the different configurations.

That's a huge feature IMO. Its not so much doing things that can't be done on "lesser" hardware, its about always using the fastest hardware available for the job.

And yes, it does seem like a stupid limitation. I can sync my Mac with my phone or PDA without going through .mac, but if I want to sync my desktop to my laptop, I have to send the data through the 'net first. The one nice thing is the .Mac account keeps all the sync information, so you've always got a good backup of all that info.
