A student can be requrired to use such as service without surrenduring ownership. If a student has his/her own account with the service s/he has probably agreed to terms of service. Those terms of service don't have to require that copyright be surrendered.

The service may request a license to catalog the work for future research purposes only without obtaining ownership. In this case, they would be prevented from reselling the work (comparing other works to the licensed work wouldn't necessarily involve "selling" it. If the service had ownership, a nice way to double dip would be to sell A papers to other students while removing it from the comparison database guaranteeing an original result.

Anyway, this is similar to the software license I use in my consulting business. I retain ownership of my work. My clients have a lifetime license to use/modify my work as they see fit regardless of whether or not I'm making the modifications. They just can't resell or distribute my work.

Yes, programmers wrote those programs. But that it takes relatively few to write commercial applications. I think the article was describing the comparative armies of programmers that were required to write less-featured versions, from scratch, for every company that used them.

Gone are the days when most large companies are largely dependent on internal programs that are developed in house or by a consultant solely for that company. This required more people. Now that companies are using "off-the-shelf" software, it takes comparatively few programmers to write the code, even if the installations are customized.

  14. Insurance or Prepaid Meidcal on Health Insurance for the Self-Employed? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Insurance isn't meant to be used for routine services. You don't buy auto insurance expecting it to cover oil changes and new tires. Why should a health insurance policy cover routine physicals.

Insurance is supposed to protect you from unforeseen disasters.

I have a high deductible PPO. It costs me $50 per month and I pay everything up to $3,500. Then they pay everything up. If I'm in a major accident or get cancer, I'm in pretty good shape.

I don't want to pay $300+ per month for a policy that pays for annual physicals when an annual physical cost $250 max.

As a result of the lower cost, I've now saved more than my annual deductible. Focus on getting an insurance policy that is that -- and insurance policy and save the difference in premium so you have enough to cover the deductible and pay routine expenses when you need it.

That said, when my wife and I were planning on having a baby, I compared a few plans and picked one that had a higher monthly fee and a lower deductible. As soon as the baby was born, we switched back to a high deductible plan. For that year, there was a point where the lower deductible and higher monthly fee made sense for us because it was a planned "procedure".

I am an ISV and make a living by selling my software. I contribute to and use open source solutions but open source is not the solution to everything. I know that some people try and justify stealing music by noting that the artists make very little and the labels make lots, but without the labels, must of this music wouldn't be available to the mainstream. Yes, the labels make a disproportionate share the money but it costs a lot to produce an album but very few independent artists have the resources to produce an album on their own. Suggesting this guy should get a lighter sentence because no one is hurt is like suggesting a car thief should get off easy because no one got hurt. I had a friend who's car was stolen and he was very happy with the outcome and his insurance check. Victimless crime? Frankly, this guy is getting off easy. If he stole a car he'd be getting a worse sentence.
