Sure, the source code isn't available for inclusion in commercial software
Not really true, If I wanted to create a commercial product and I use some GPL source in it, I can still charge the people the cost of the product when i sell it. The only catch is I have to give them the source as well for no additional charge.
I am not obligated to give the source to anyone else except the people who have my app.
Well of all the browsers I have used Konqueror is by far one of the best. Agreed it cant run many proprietary IE extensions, but except for that it renders most pages correctly and is fast as well.
I think the best part of konqueror I like is the ability to restrict cookies, java and javascript on a site by site basis
Hyperion Software and Loki have ported games to Linux. All their games have a nice installer and work flawlessly, usually better than the windows based game it was ported from.
Many projects on sourceforge especially many games are in Alpha or Planning stage. If you MUST try and download and run an alpha game please be prepared to do some technical stuff.
Or even better try buying a game from Loki and see how polished that is.
Its not that Linux must have Office ported to it, but needs a good word processor and spreadsheet application of it must move to the desktop market. Yes I will hear ppl say why office use Lyx or always exchange csv documents than excel files, but MS Office has the stranglehold because more than anything, they enable desktop users to do their work.
My Boss doesnt care if it is Linux or MacOS or windows, as long as he can create a document, work on his budget spreadsheet and read his email. So far The K Office project looks to have promise. I have been using K Word for a while (couldnt get MS Word filters working tho) and its definitely a pleasure to use. I also use Applixware (on Linux and BSD) and that was a good package too. StarOffice albeit a bit slow isnt bad either. But all 3 need to mature a whole lot more before they will be allowed on the desktop.
Didnt Corel release Word Perfect Office for Linux ?
Linux might not be the standard desktop in many offices, but so far its a darn stable one..

If he really did break into the school's computer system then why cant they publish what he did? Like "He circumvented security procedures and gained access to the extra marital affairs of the teachers" That would be a good thing, but its common knowledge that the people in school districts who have the power to decide what is hacking and what isnt are pretty clueless themselves...
"He also would not discuss exactly what Shinjan did to the computer system or what files he accessed. Shinjan's parents don't know to this day the extent of their son's infractions"
Why not reveal the extent of what he did? The young kid could very well have hung himself cause he couldnt face his parents, but why not reveal what he did ?
A friend of mine had disciplinary action taken against him cause he brought a laptop to his school and plugged it into a network jack, received an IP from the dhcp server and he downloaded a kernel patch from www.kernel.org . Thats it... the school charged him on illegally gaining access to privileged systems.
People nowadays are getting so paranoid that gifted students are being labelled as cyber terrorists.. The school administrators are just non computer literate users who like to run a witchhunt..
If the school can publish WHAT EXACTLY He did then I might believe them... otherwise its just another case of people in power who cant tell the difference between a cracker and a gifted person..
Companies *do* need to ensure that there should be safeguards installed to protect against intruders, but just cause someone has a open system which is accessible, I dont try and use its services without permission
How about someone keeps a machine which you can telnet in as root, without a password.
The moment you logged into it, the MOTD says 'Authorized users only'. Then what? Is it ok to get in cause the account had no password, or not ?
Yes, you are right, the parents and teachers of the kids are to blame. Yes many games are violent as well (SoF or Kingpin anyone ?)
These 'relatives' trying to blame the game industry are nothing but money hungry thugs who are trying to make as much profit as they can from the great tragedy at columbine and after all the deceased have been buried, these people come to spit on their graves.
I use slackware and many RH, Mdk and deb users who I have given a slack cd to have also switched.
Why?
Cause its simple and easy to customise. I use it on 7 servers and my workstations at work and at home.
I have never had:
package management issues (which I have had with both RH and Deb tho Deb issues are like 0.0000001% of rpm issues)
Stuff has always compiled, i never needed to hack anything or work around it
Always been rock solid from the install
Simple installation procedure, agreed while not gui, but good installation programs dont need to be a gui
I started out on Slack, moved to RH (4.1 i think), moved to Debian and now back to Slack and I am not going back:)
Cause maybe India has too much to lose if they ever start a war, be it nuclear or not. India is a country with a growing economy, a democratic government and the people dont want to lose that...
Its all about the dollars and being an ICBM threat India gets none of those dollars... India knows this and wouldnt jeopardise it.. Just a reminder to all :
Sorry, but only partially true. I agree that the overwhelming number of ----PRESENT---- linux users use linux cause it is free (their view: As in beer), hence they wont spend a dime on games. Same goes for other software as well.
But that leaves the rest of us who do actually go out and buy the linux game and pay the high price as well as very high shipping to get the game. I have almost every single title by Loki and pre-ordered Shogo, Sin. I also purchased Quake III for Windows since it was almost 2(?) months before the native Linux version came out.
I *do* believe Linux can become a superior platform for gaming , but like you said unless we decide to speak with our wallets its a battle we will lose.
My advice for all the people who scream for Linux games: Go out and buy one, instead of whining about not enough games being ported. If companies see a revenue from the Linux market, we'll see more games.
Its good, i would say even necessary to study about the Holocaust in a History Class. Not in English. It seems to me that the teacher is forcing her political views on the students.
With the RIAA, MPAA and now the AAP pushing the fight of intellectual property to such an extent that they are targetting libraries, I have to wonder if this extreme dose of capitalism is going to further widen the bridge between the have's and have-nots.
If Schroeder has her way and gets to charge libraries, that cost is going to trickle down to the basic person in form of higher taxes etc to pay for the public libraries. Soon many of the libraries in the smaller towns will begin to die out and soon the only ones who will be able to go and read will be the ones who can afford to pay. Even in America, there are families who cant afford books and those students who need to go to the libraries to study or do some reference work. My books cost me over 500 bucks each semester.
In every civilization in the world, the presence of a community library has helped civilization to progress, since having an educated populace has helped to move forward. Its kinda ludicrous that they would target libraries since they are attacking one of the basic blocks of education.
I use both FreeBSD and Linux and having used them both in an intelligent manner, all I can say is you are full of CRAP
Both BSDs and Linux have directly and indirectly contributed to each other's efforts.
>> 1. The typical Linux user is not worth associating with.
If FreeBSD does it for you then by all means go for it, use it and feel happy about it. Same to a Linux user.
If you dont use one OS cause of the reasons you said, then you are an idiot cause you fail to make use of the best of both worlds.
Once the providers decide on more ways to make money (i.e charging viewers $9.99 to watch a game 2 hours after it is over instead of $19.99 Live) There *ARE* people who record a game and dont watch any news shows or read the paper till they have watched the recorded show. This would be an excellent way for them to capitalise on people who work during the show time.
Piracy is the lowest item on the list. Piracy is possible for Pay-Per-View movies, but by then the video is already in your corner video rental.
IMHO this is all about controlling and adding a revenue stream.
But for the life of me I dont understand why they would want to reduce the grade on the picture? Is this the "Go stand in the corner" punishment from them?
Usually the best teachers are the ones who teach you more than just the subject they teach.
By 6th grade I had come to detest mathematics. My 6th grade teacher Mr Krishnamurthy, not only made me love mathematics, but also got me to love programming.
He made math more like a puzzle game to solve and soon enough my grades were better and I was starting to enjoy the subject more.
ALL of his students feel that way!
I still call on him every other month or so and thank him for all he has done for me:)
The number of the beast...
Yes that _is_ pretty lenient. After being accepted for the job, I usually ask for all contract papers, I specifically ask for the NDA or any other 'binding' contracts before signing the offer letter. Its also preferrable if you fax that request and have a copy of that and the fax as well before you sign it. This way after signing the offer letter, if the HR dept swings by your desk and drops off other binding agreements, at least you can say "no" and "i _did_ request all this before signing on ". In one of my first jobs, I was given a pretty stringent non-compete (telecom firm) and ever since then I have always asked for *all* contracts before sigining the offer letter.
