I agree I have 20 years experience in many areas and finding a job in this field right now. hahahahahahahahahaaha! Good luck I say, wal-mart is your best bet. The sad part is I speak not just for myself but for many others who either have jobs and are looking to no avail or just finally ending up as stock boys at your local home depot (one in particular has a Doctorate).

  2. Re:One word - Karate on Building Social Skills in Gifted Youths? · · Score: 1

As the father of a gifted child and a gifted child myself, I am aware of the social stigma.

My son is in kindergarten and has asked that we skip him to the 11th grade, mostly because he's already doing a lot of 5th-11th grade work.

We do plan on skipping him, but only to second, social skills are a must, it took me until my 20's (i.e. out of the school/middle/high cliches) before I became a socially acceptable 'geek'.

Our direction with my son (my wife and I) has been to enroll him in Tae Quan Do (age 6) and his master makes it clear that only in the presence of a master or apprentice that you show what you have learned, I think this is important in that, I don't want to hear him say, I know blah blah and can beat you up. Although like the second guy said, he needs to defend himself, as I did. I do believe, you never start the fight, but you must finish it. (Sometimes finishing it means walking away, other times it means sending the other kid to the hospital.. done both).

The bottom line is, let these kids be themselves and come into their own, I cannot control the issues my son will see as he grows, but I can give him a strong sense of self worth (other then his own opinion about his intelligence) but will be there when he falls and when he succeeds.

I can say this, I agree, socially the kids you are dealing with will be late bloomers, but they will contribute and if true to themselves have their own personal needs met.

So let the social skills come in later, if the kid wishes to do more then math, reading, whatever, then provide them with options (my son chose Tae Quan Do), my son loves his Tae Quan Do classes and looks forward to them, but this is his thing, it might not be theirs.

As for girlfriends, etc. All my friends, geek or not have married or are dating the people they wish to be with, I had a late, but awesome life in that area, there is no reason to believe they will not either. Here on slashdot, we have already seen that a geek can get his girl.

I never considered MARS or anywhere else, MOON or otherwise as easy. Before the 'New World' was found how many explorers and and their kin died.

All astronaughts know, the moment they step into a craft of any kind may be their last, their families do too. It's why Christa Maculafs backup said the next day after the Challenger disaster, I would go up tomorrow if asked, we know and she knew the risks of space travel.

The exploration of the world is now the exploration of the universe. There will be the next James Town on Mars and others.

This is the price and reward or exploration.

Having been in this business since about the same time as Hayes, Katz and others you obviously have no idea what the difference between a acoustic coupler modem to, 300 baud, to 1200 baud, to 2400 baud and what we have now meant. Hayes was the standard after acoustic coupler. It defined everything up to 19.2k. When their designed reached the speed where I could not type fast enough to keep up, they changed the world.

Don't think about the web, think about your keystrokes think about those who saw they could send much more then just text for the first time.
(Never mind sending a 1 meg file for 60 minutes).

  5. Re:This is the end of SCO, for sure, IBM != Stupid on SCO Sues IBM for Sharing Secrets with Unix and Linux · · Score: 1

Having worked with and for IBM on the development side of things, I find is very unlikely that SCO has a case. IBM is anal to the n'th degree about "contamination". I have seen this over and over in the last 15 years of dealing with them on the code side of things. IBM is the company with source licenses to more systems then anyone is probably aware of and if your working on something that might compete or might come in question you have to be 'clean' from any competing products. Granted, this is not my impression of IBM of the early and mid 80's but I know this to be a fact of IBM well before Linux even existed.

I'm sorry to see that SCO (which certianly only exists as a name anymore) but at one time was a large part of the OS world at one time resort to extortion.

I had something insightful to say, but it seems silly now. I rely on his driver for all the data that matters to me. Picture of my son from birth to today and all the code I have written and kept in my years. It was his DAC960 driver and the fact that Mylex seemed to respect the driver enough to point you to his page for Linux support that made me choose Linux over Solaris a few years ago for a set of large arrays.

His contributions will truly be missed by me and I am sure many others.

  8. A link or E-Mail Address to Voice My Opinion? on Kazaa, Verizon Propose Compulsory Music Licensing · · Score: 1

I am a firm beliver in file sharing. All data shows that most people are honest and will pay a fair value for what they use. I have a huge CD collection, so do many of my friends. I however am not that careful with my CD's and as a result have mp3'd many of them at the 360k options so I can have them with me and burn new cd's. Although, I rarely do that anymore except for road trips. I have no problem at all paying for what I listen to and like. I too expect to get paid for my work, I put effort, time, energy and (yes) ego, into what I do (a software and web systems developer) that I expect to get paid. Artists deserve to get paid and if my voice will help this alliance, help the artist get what they deserve, I want to know how and where to help. I am willing to pay for each and every song I download and save (the key being save and in high quality, not at 128k and only while I am a member). I can't speak for everyone, but it would be nice to know and hear from and voice with others who feel the same way.
