Now, Gotmail doesn't rely on WebDAV (as does Hotway) so this change alone won't stop it from working. I haven't seen any complaints from the gotmail cron job I run, so it's still probably working fine.
Why should we worry about it? If the XFree86 license is incompatible with the GPL, that does not only restrict its distribution and changes to the source. It also restricts what derived products you can distribute using XFree86.
"So what?", I hear you ask again. This matters, because according to the FSF, linking against a library- even if the library is shared- creates a derived work. Not everyone shares this view- I certainly don't- but the FSF's published opinion on the license they wrote would probably weigh heavily in court. See this GPL FAQ and others for their stated opinion.
More specifically, this means you can't redistribute a program that uses both licenses, or has pieces of both XFree86 code (under the new license) and GPL'd code.
That's bad enough in itself, but if the FSF's interpretation of derived work is applied again, then this would mean you also couldn't use both an XFree86 library and a GPL'd library in your code, at the same time, no matter what your license was. That would effectively prohibit anyone from using Qt, for example, since it's GPL'd and uses Xlib.
They are indeed alleging that there's tons and tons of lines of UNIX code in Linux. "Millions", in fact, is what they have claimed. Complete rubbish, of course, but they've said it.
If and when Groklaw comes back up, read some of the older headlines. Beautiful information in there; don't get turned off by what seems to be excessive sensationalism over the past couple days.
"when was the last time you changed a candy bar to
a credit card?"
Yesterday. I do this sort of thing regularly. I invented a machine to reorganize the molecules in a candy bar into a plastic card with a magnetic strip. I haven't been able to buy anything with the results, yet, but work is progressing..
REDMOND, WA - Microsoft head Bill Gates, already considered by many to be among the most powerful men in the world, further increased his powers Monday, augmenting several of his key statistics to near-immortal levels.
Among the most striking increases were a +2 raise in dexterity to 18, and an overwhelming charisma increase to an above-human score of 20, placing Gates in the realm of deities and demigods.
"I am pleased to announce that I have boosted my already impressive statistics," Gates said in a statement to shareholders Monday. "As we develop the technological framework that will dominate the 21st century, these augmentations-and others to follow-will be powerful wards against competition from the likes of Netscape, Oracle and Melkor who is named Morgoth."
"Microsoft is the software-industry leader today, and tomorrow it will also dominate the realm of information access, as well as the content being accessed," Gates said. "The continued growth of our Corbis Media archive, the successful development and launch of MSNBC, and my mastery of the shield spells of the Elven King Lagolin are only the beginning for Microsoft."
that is a good idea: have many different servers available, not administered by the same people, and there's no centralized figure for the RAIAA (whatever) to bring down. But this is what OpenNap has already done- see the below post by malus. there are indeed dozens of these servers, and some of them actually do have a lot of content.
If we can make a star trek replicator, putting together organic molecules to create, say, a nice cup of earl gray, then why not a star trek transporter as well? have yourself scanned and your plans beamed far away, where you are reassembled. what do you do with the old copy? destroy it? keep it? if replication is a possibility, the philosophers of social ethics will have a heyday.

I think it really is linux powered- you just need to add in CONFIG_HUMANOID_ROBOT=y for the new AC trees.....
