A Complete Map To Springfield

neelm writes "If you even needed to know the names of the roads Homer Simpson takes to work, you can find out at Guide to Springfield, USA. On the site you'll find a complete map and guide to all springfield location. The map was put together mostly by watching (and rewatching) Simpson's episodes. The map is even listed in Harvard Map Collection!"

Smith with an apostrophe s is possessive, just like any other noun. We could say I am Mr. Smith's neighbor. That is the normal rule for making possessives. There is nothing different about it because it is a name. If Smith is plural and possessive, we would follow the same pattern that we use for any other nouns: I am the Smiths' neighbor.

If the name ends with an s, the same possessive and plural rules apply to the name as to any other noun. So we say Mr. Smith is Mr. Jones' neighbor, or Mr. Smith is Mr. Jones's neighbor, depending on how we pronounce it. Be consistent, whichever way you choose. If Jones is plural, add an apostrophe after the plural form, since we never pronounce a word "Joneseses." We would write Mr. Smith is the Joneses' neighbor.

You are semi-correct, but only when referring to American-English, as we have adapted different styles to punctuation. That's the way I've been taught here in the US about possesive proper nouns. People in the UK, however, may beg to differ. It seems in the UK, for proper nouns, an 's' must be used after the apostrophe. Only pluralized nouns do without the extra 's' at the end; same as we do here.

There's a great book called Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss which explains quite humo[u]rously how to correctly use punctuation in proper English; at times comparing our (American) English with theirs. This is where I've learned the subtle differences. It really is a great read for people who want to learn more about punctuation in the English language. That may sound weird, but the book does a great job of clearing up some confusion about punctuation usage.

However, she makes very minimal references to grammar. So, for those of you looking to improve your grammar skills, you'll have to look elsewhere.

his house on evergreen terrace. When he finally becomes a member of the
stone cutters, instead of giving him a parking spot closer to the plant
itself they give him a pair of roller blades to skate from his parking
space to the plant. THE IRONY!!
