I guess they felt they should get something from the acquisition of Lotus Symphony so that's what they call their version of OpenOffice. Perhaps Microsoft should offer their own version of OO and call it "Microsoft Bob".
"A few years ago in WWI&II casualties were in the thousands and hundreds of thousands. Now they are in the dozens yet there is more protest over them than before."
Well the numbers are small now because most of the participants in WWI & WWII are already dead.
You can't take a war out of context to prove your case. If a Hitler tried to takeover Germany today the CIA would probably take him out before we even heard of him.
Sure, if this trend continues they might do something really insane like putting the astronauts' compartment above the propulsion system just because falling debris might create a few holes that might cause a burn-up on reentry. Those crazy wimps!
"Microsoft didn't make any effort to ensure that the lump of code they were forced to release conformed in any way to the Linux kernel coding standards."
Jeesh. Who cares about coding standards? If the code is useful than use it. You can dot the "i"s and cross the "t"s later.
It kills me how naive people can be about IBM. IBM in recent history has acquired products and discontinued them because they compete against other products they sell. They won't even sell you a license to the last version and they certainly won't make it open source. IBM won't open anything that hurts their bottom line because they don't really believe in OSS.
"That's right, the company that is still banging the patent drum against open source now has its own 501(c)(6) open source foundation."
Taking a few profitless applications from the bone pile and making them open source while patenting everything else like crazy was IBM's idea. Another example of non-innovation by Microsoft.
"When was the last time you paid Google for its search results"
When was the last time Google paid me for ads appearing in my browser? Given that Google has a ton of money they obviously get more out of search than an individual does. I'm not complaining, but Google search is a business not a public service.
"Back to computers, your 7 year old has learned (at same level) what hibernate is because it's there."
I don't understand your point. My daughter uses hibernate when we tell her she has to turn the computer off to save energy but she doesn't want to start all over.
On other occasions we don't want to preserve the state. Until computers can read our minds, the ability to make these choices is not obsolete.
So you're saying that a good investor will make money consistently except when they don't.
So the experts whose models didn't work are now going to make new models. Perhaps we need new experts.

He was right. Sailing West from Portugal to India was a stupid and dangerous idea.

That's why they call the first 10 Amendments "The Bill of Non-privileges"
Yes, I've been wanting to buy a smartphone from a manufacturer that isn't a hardware company for some time; can you help me?

It doesn't work that way.
One must have something to Embrace and Extend before it can be extinguished. What open source project are they attempting to embrace?
"People who develop and know how to use Linux are a different bred. They tend to be self reliant and innovative."
Funny I'm not a big Linux fan but I also find that people who agree with me are Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind etc.
was exactly what the BSD folks wanted to be done with their code. What's the problem?

That the organization thinks GPLv3 sucks. Next question.

MS only uses EEE when there's a potential for profit.
Nice work sliding the subject from a good product (VS) to a not-so-good product (VSS).
I'd say that most products by both MS and Apple are derivative - not that there's anything wrong with that.
"Isn't the whole purpose of copyright the betterment of humankind?"
Not the primary purpose. Among other things copyright was used to protect the moral rights of the author.
Yes these books are so valuable that it's OK to throw the authors rights in the trash. It's not as if they wrote something important ... oh wait.
"Except if it's Bill."
Or Larry. Or Sergey.
What was your point again?
