Clearly you don't do purchasing for large enterprises. I'm in an organization known for being cheap and the 'low end' machines they buy are in the $900-$1200 range (though with bulk discounts I'm sure it's less than that). A high end machine will be $1800-$2500. Gee, that's what a G5 tower costs.

Fortune 1000 companies don't build their own boxes from parts they find on pricewatch, and they don't buy eMachines boxes. They buy mid range and high end Dell/HP/Gateway boxes and pay the same price they'd pay for an Apple box.

I use XP at work, but in classic UI mode because it's the only way to not want to gouge my eyes out. Seeing the Longhorn screenshots reminds me of something going on in the nicer neighborhood a few blocks from my house.

There's a really working class guy who made good running a car repair shop. They've got a great reputation and do solid work. So he's moved into an upscale neighborhood, bought an older house that needed some work, and he's fixed it up. But he didn't just relandscape and update the paint job, he is seriously pimping it out. It's all very nicely done and high quality, but it's done with no eye for aesthetics. If a three tier $4500 marble fountain with an 8 foot radius is good, then four of them in a front yard that's 50 feet wide is even better!

From what I hear the inside is pretty much the same concept.

That's what these screenshots make me think of.

Sure, a $500 Dell might be the same specs as that machine now, but if they were going to just buy a new computer they'd be buying a top of the line machine again and spend $2000+ dollars. So $300 for repair is a small price to pay.

I agree that it's silly to buy it because it's cheap and then spend craploads making it perform.

Most of the people I know that have bought one (only a handful, so far) didn't buy it for price alone. Form factor and noise are the two things that sold me. I've built dozens of sub $500 PCs, but to get the thing even close to quiet enough to use in a home recording studio you're going to spend another $1000 and not get much result for your money.

I've bought 'silent' hard drive enclosures, superquiet fans, case batting, enclosed cases in larger foam lined cabinets (which is not only the most effective approach, but also by far the cheapest). The foam lined cabinet worked pretty well, but heat and accessibility were big issues.

Now I have a tiny little 6x6 box on the shelf above my monitor, it makes less noise than me breathing in between takes, and there's plenty of room for keyboards, DSPs, speakers, sheet music, etc etc etc.

I threw a 160g mini mate in there for good measure and it fits nicely right under the mini and raises the profile by less than 2 inches.
