It was a disaster waiting to happen when Carter cut the requested amount funds for the Corps of Engineers in the 70s as did every President since. Not to mention that the pumps are about 100 years old.
Do you think NOLA would be inhabited if they got a hurricane like this every year? Or San Francisco if they got a 1906-like earthquake every year? No. This sort of thing doesn't happen all the time. People build cities where it is economically advantages to do so. As soon as it is not make economic sense to live in an area, people will leave.
Even if the levies were never built, NOLA would still have be smacked around by this hurricane due to it's location. Given the amount of traffic that goes up the Mississippi, the levies would still have been built to maintain a clear shipping channel.
It's the flatest continent, so there shouldn't be a lot of line of sight issues and the remote cattle stations certainly would be users that would benefit from long distance wireless internet.
It's too bad that often the steel plates don't help that much. The flat bottom of the Humvee isn't designed to deflect blasts and putting too much armor on it will increase wear on the suspension and make it of little use for going off road. Those are some of the reasons why the DoD is looking to replace Humvees.
Google could help the problem by being a bit more communicative.
Why? Keeping the lid on a project until it's ready for the public sounds like a good idea to me. You won't have Wall Street or any of the tech press yammering that they are late or over hyping it, and competitors won't have any lead time to react. The businesses in the article got used to the employment market after the dot com crash. They are having to put up with what other firms had to do when the dot com craze was in full swing: pay more and/or make their business attractive for good candidates.
If our factories don't exist, then why are still cranking out about 25% of the world's manufactured goods made in the US (which is about what it was around 1900, EU-land is about 26%, but was 62% then). Why has US' manufacturing output doubled since 1970 in these nonexistant factories? Why are we producing 50% more steel than we did in 1980? Automation. The percentage of the workforce involved in manufacturing has dropped, but technology has filled the gap. Sure a lot of what's for sale at Wal-Mart and other stores is cheap Chinese crap. But that only accounts for 18% of imports of manufactured items.
You act like this is a recent thing and has everything to do with the current administration and religion. The decline of 'science in America' has been going on for decades based on what is glorified in pop culture. Being a scientist or engineer isn't 'cool' as a slacker, stoner, or jock. Studying math and science is for losers. Working hard is for suckers, unless it happens to make you lots of quick cash.
I don't know if IBM was losing money or not, but maybe they decided that the return on capital on the disk drive business didn't meet some internal standard. So they sold it (and later the PC business) in order to put the capital to work on more profitable segments of their business?
I wondered if the people behind this idea were behind Buffalo Commons or not. That went over like a lead balloon in the states where they wanted to create this reserve. If someone wants to buy a bunch of land to create something like that, that's ok with me. It's their money and as long as they keep their animals on their property, they won't have to worry about neighbors shooting them. But from what I remember when this was first proposed, it involved the feds booting people off their land. Screw that.
That's a good point. I'm not sure how well the USB to traditional serial adapters would work in those cases. But the last time I was at CompUSA, I did notice that they were still selling expansion cards with those type of ports on them. Will the new Intel based Macs have them? that would be odd.

threatening to kill someone is a serious offense. who the fuck does he think he is? a NOLA looter?
I think that's what many of the canals in the area are for.
so where are the people who work on the oil rigs, pipelines, refineries, etc. going to live?

You have enough room in your cubicle for a bike? that would be nice

looks like your source either didn't know about this development or pulling your leg on the timeline.
10x the US population would be 2.9 billion Chinese. That's high by about 1.6 billion people.
15 years later and we're still using olive drab and woodland camouflage as the default color for personal equipment!

Isn't that what interns were for: cheap coders?

I don't see why not. Given the problems that many have had with IBM's hard drives and low end servers/desktops, it's probably a monkey off their back.
It looks like Conner Peripheral's Chinook line of hard drives did that.

either people should learn to deal with the results of their choice in living arrangements

She already met him last year and voiced her concerns then. Bush is just ignoring a publicity whore.
