    Those leaders have huge investments in Saddam's government. He owes them lots of money. They want to keep him around so they can get that money. It doesn't matter what he does to his own populace as long as they get paid. It also doesn't hurt that this position pacifies the large Arab populations in France and Germany.

    I have yet to hear a single rational argument in favor of this war or any war from anyone ever, under any circumstances.

    But the things that you listed are perfectly normal actions that people could perform in areas w/o the repressive laws. Those actions drew support from people in other areas because they saw those actions as perfectly reasonable. Vandalization of public and private property, whether on the internet or in the physical world will more than likely just piss off those people who you want to get on your side.

    B-52s can drop precision munitions just like any other airplane in the USAF. In fact, since they have the fuel capacity to loiter over areas at high altitude and carry lots of these bombs, they are perfect for these duties. Why have some F-117, F-15, or F-18 flying back and forth several times a day with a couple 1 ton bombs when you can have one plane with several of these items circling overhead for hours? If a forward observer spots a target, a bomb can be on its way in just a few minutes instead of whatever time it takes for a small plane to get in the area.

    No kidding. The politically safe thing to do would be to continue doing what's been done for the last 12 years and hope that you're not in office with the shit hits the fan. I find it amusing that the same people who wail that the US or any other democracy should wait to be attacked first were probably the ones that bitched the most about why the govt didn't do anything or what did they cover up when we were attacked.

    IMHO, the French & German partnership with the US has been going down hill for quite a while. They French have been pissed with the US & UK since at least the 60s, it's just that those feelings have been coming to the surface more often now that France is starting to act like it's in charge of Europe. Chirac has been acting like a prick ever since he won re-election too. This is yet another example of it.

    I have a Rio Volt 250 which is perfect for long trips. It's probably the main reason why I haven't converted my CDs into ogg format: it only plays mp3 or wma files. Since the firmware can be upgraded, it would be nice if they opened the specs so hardware like this can be adapted for other file formats. I'm sure the ReplayTV users wouldn't mind being able to switch over to a Tivo subscription and keep the same hardware.

    But that hardware at least keeps you doing something other than just sitting in a room and staring at the walls or watching the garbage broadcast on television. I wouldn't have much of a social life with or without the hardware, but the hardware keeps me from going insane.

    The Soviets kept the bulk of the German Army busy while the Brits destroyed the Luftwaffe and the Brits & Americans chased them out of Mediterranian countries, and pummled their industrial centers from the air. Now imagine what would have happened if the Brits would have just been content on defending their own territories? The Germans would have had more supplies and an easier time getting them to the Eastern Front. They killed over 4 Soviets for every German killed as it was. On their own, they would have lost to Germany like they did in WWI.

    Thank you Russia for the bullet stoppers.

    Tennessee has similar sales tax rates and if the company has some form of physical presence in the state and the shipment goes to TN, the customer pays their local sales tax. Many places have warehouses here, so it's not uncommon to see sales tax added to web site orders. That's not too bad because often the merchandise will be delivered in a couple days while paying the standard ground rate.

    Personnally, I don't mind paying sales taxes, even at ~9% rates on food. It encourages limiting purchases to necessities and I don't have to report personal earnings to yet another govt entity.

    I think the underlying message of the article is a lesson on knowing when to license the designs to other companies with existing manufacturing plants and when to do it yourself. All of Kamen's other designs were made by other companies. Since his factory is largely idle, it appears that so far he should have done what he did in the past.

    Maybe they can re-tool it and make it into an intelligent utility cart. Postal carriers still like walking because it keeps them warm in the winter and gives them time to sort mail. The big gripe is carrying around the bag. Turn the segway into a modern day pack mule and you solve the biggest complaint for the postal carriers. That and make the batteries easily exchangeable. Removing and replacing 8 bolts that could get lost isn't an valid option.

    Where do these retards come from? There is not a peaceful solution when dealing with fucktards like Hitler or minor fucktards like Saddam. These 'solutions' allow them more time in which to strengthen their positions, manufacture weapons, etc and become worse problems later on. More people died because Chamberlain and the rest of Europe didn't have the balls to stand up to Hitler and make Germany abide by the treaties drafted at the end of WWI. The same is true today. Iraq has been violating UN resolution after resolution for the past 12 years. The US is pressing the UN to do it's damn job, otherwise it will become irrelevant. The anti-war people think that marching and holding protests will actually bring peace. They are wrong. They encourage the tyrants of the world into believing that there will be no retaliation for their actions. The demonstrations only happen in countries where someone in a prior generation fought and died to given them that right. If done in a place like Iraq, the marchers would be on their way to a mass grave. Mao was right. ALL political power eminates from a barrel of a gun.

    Russia's role in the war was to march enough bullet stoppers to the front and keep the Germans slaughtering them while the US & UK got a force together to invade Western Europe. Even though they were are 'ally', they wouldn't let the US use any of their bases for use against Japan.

    It's interesting to note that if Japan wasn't such a big menance, then why did the War Dept at the time authorize the creation of 400K Purple Hearts that they believed were needed to be delivered after a typical invasion of Japan. We're still handing out 60 yr old medals.

    This looks like a slick phone and given that it runs linux and java, I'm sure I'd like one to play around with it. However, based on my cell phone usage, I'm not sure if I'd like it. Most of my calls are still made/received in the car. Even with a hands free speaker in my ear, I still grab the phone and push buttons with one hand. I don't have to look because I've gotten used to the phone and the bumps on the case that help the user identify the buttons. Maybe the voice activation software has improved in the last few years, but I'm sure I wouldn't like pushing virtual buttons on a screen.

    Why not use their own embedded PPC chips? I thought the focus on the low power embedded market was one of the reasons why Motorolla had been lagging in producing hi-performance chips for Apple.

    Or you could get a lot fo the same information with a subscription to AllDataDIY. It depends on whether you want a book in the garage or just read about it on the computer and print out what you need.

    They aren't getting into the PDA market. This is a reference design that other OEMs will license so they can jump into the PDA market. I'm sure IBM will be happy to sell them parts too.

    The more devices that run linux, the better the chances of linux continuing on in the future. I don't think the use of linux in small devices such as this or a Tivo hurt its chances of being used elsewhere, like, an IBM mainframe.

    With all the recalls that are out in the market today, there is no central authority (that I could find with a quick Google, anyhow) that shows all the recalls.

    Get a subscription to http://www.alldatadiy.com and you can get the recall and technical service bulletins the OEMs send to the dealers..

    There have been a few slashdot articles about satelite internet access, mainly starband, which people are running Windows in a VM so they can use it from a linux machine. Although it appears one has to do some tuning with linux even if windows is sharing the connection.
