Welcome to my world. I work for a CLEC/ISP with coverage throughout Oregon. In the last year no less then three times have construction crews drilled through massive cables in three difference cities. The best was when they pull the spegetti fork type pull, under a major highway. It took them three days to get it all fixed. The problem with that mess is they just can't splice the wire together but need to replace meters of cable under asphalt.
If you ever want to find some buried fiber in Oregon just put a backhoe in a field. When you check it in the morning it will be pointed to the neared fiber.
It has since closed down, but it was almost a game going to the Future Shop in Eugene, Oregon. For instance I went in to help my Dad get a printer for his computer. Salesman almost immediatly walks out sounding off how this certain printer was great, and oddly enough one of the most expensive. He continues to go on for about 5 minutes about how he got it for his dads computer never had any problems, works great, blah blah blah.
Cut to a few days later, I go in the next day to get some game or something. I over hear a different salesperson talking someone about a monitor. He continues to go on for about 5 minutes about how he got it for his dads computer never had any problems, works great, blah blah blah. You will notice the verbaitem cut and paste from above. Yep same spiel as the first sales guy almost exactly word for word. It seems, like most sales peoiple those at future shop lacked a soul and just had a clonded soul implanted from a master super salesman. Well maybe not, but I heard that same story a few more times. It has been a while, but I think it was five times I heard that.
Just to add a bit from the site, Marvel is working with Gotham Entertainment. At least in the press releases. So cross overs are possible
Marvel Comics & Gotham Entertainment Group -Indian publishing licensee of Marvel Comics and the leading publisher of international comic magazines in South Asia - announces the launch of Spider-Man India.
I must agree with Otterpop (even though he is a opinionated jackass:) ) on a lot of this. There are quite a few version of spiderman that have been done over the years, some have done well, some haven't. This is just another of those. Heck we may even get a spiderman/indian spiderman crossover. Just wait until people see if it has decent storylines, I know the artwork looks great from what I have seen.
*ducks flying sharp objects* About 6 months ago I lost my job. In the year I was with that company I went from enjoying IT work and the Internet to slowly getting more and more burnt out over it. Now within two weeks of losing that job I already had another job in the same field, but it is a whole new ball game. It is run so much better, I am learning a lot, and doing things I never would have had the chance with the other ISP (yes both are Internet providers, I'm a glutton for punishment what can I say). So basically from my point-of-view at least it isn't what you are doing, but where you are doing it. If you don't like your job, quit, find a new job. There are jobs out there.
If you really want a job don't send e-mail resumes or call on the phone, go to the offices where you want to work, not from those that are trying to find someone. If you can get in before they post an ad or have sufficient experience or a good resume you can get a job even if they aren't actively hiring. And don't settle for what you think you can do. Shoot high, the worst someone could say is no. It's not hard finding a job if you just know how to do it. *ducks flying blunt objects* ---------------- Shooting is not too good for my enemies.
I just can't stay away. I do believe my views are skewed a bit since the situation where I live may be quit different from the rest of the world, or it could be the same, who knows. I know there are people out there that are really homeless and do need help. Even a bum that will just by achohol would be fine by me. But there are those out there, especially in my area that take advantage of peoples good nature.
Right now in my area we have a very liberal (to the extreme) local government. Everyone is trying to make people happy and not worrying about the consequences. Some programs are good, local organizations will loan clothes for people on a interview and they have a few days a year (it may be monthly) that those in need can get a haircut and can use a mailbox. And those are used and are great, but there are those that just don't care and make good money pan-handling. And it is tax free so why would they work.
This is a bit off topic, but by extreme liberal local government I mean this group of people had a man made sewage drainage ditch named a wetland, and has basically put a freeze on a large number of major projects from companies that would bring hundreds, if not more, jobs into the area.
Our state unemployment program gives a lot of money to people and it blatantly abused, I mentioned that in a earlier post so I will drop it (it's a little pet peave of mine). When I recently filed for unemployment I was actually going to make more by not working then I was when I left my last job, and was wondering why the hell shouldn't I take a job and not take six months off and enjoy it.
The adopt a family program is a good idea. We do have a couple good organizations in my area as well. And donating time is definatly a great way to help out. Cash tends to cloud peoples judgment. But that seems to be the way our society is going. It is easier to give cash then go out and put a little time and effort into it.
Completely off topic, but I actually quit giving gift certificates to family members last year because it just was getting so prevelant. when the whole family gets together for christmas and half the gifts are in envelopes it was time for a change.
It isn't much as they are homeless by choice (which there are), but there are those that pose as homeless that really aren't. One of my relatives ex-wife did this (after they were apart). And I know I am going to take flak from this (I already have from my family). But the unemployment system is part of the problem for the jobless. At least in the area I live in, due to how the union is set up and unemployment, basic road work laborers make about $60,000 (about $20,000 of that from unemployment) a year and get 3 to 4 months off in the winter. Even though they are not really unemployed just no jobs untill spring when it all starts over. Hell my brother almost took a job working in hawaii doing road work but he passed on it and took a job in San Fransico instead. I believe his complaint was it was to hot to do road work there.
As for the lobster bit, well with food stamps we pay for it. Anyone that pays taxes pays for it. At around $15 or more for a lobster it is just a bit over board. Someone could eat for a week with that, if not at least a few days. Now I am all for helping the people that need it, but rather then giving money to some of these groups it is often better to donate your time, or food, blankets etc.
I should probably just stay out of this and not post, but well, i'm bored.
Unfortunatly there are lots of people homeless, but the more unfortunate part is most are there by choice. I have seen people by lobster with food stamps, and use the extra that they get for cigerettes. I have had someone come up to me as for money because they are homeless turn around and get into a new looking car. People out there blantantly abuse the system and expoit those that are trying to help. I would bet anyone could put on some old clothes and walk into a place where they give out food and walk out with a armload. And some of the organization that run the programs aren't much better. Pretty much for every $1 you spend, $.25 will go to those that don't need it, and $.25 will go to the organization that runs it. Helping the homeless is a very lucrative business. But I'm just a bit jaded about that.
As for the job market, jobs are out there. I lost my job about four months ago and had a new one within 3 weeks. It's not difficult, it just takes a little, well a lot, of work.
Not young, just optimistic. I doubt that it would or could happen. But ideally not having scattered mom and pop ISPs all over the place with no real standard is going to cause major problems in the next few years.
I myself only give the Internet market 5 to 10 years with how it is currently running. Who knows what, but I have a feeling there will be some major changes in the next few years.
But couldn't this be a good thing, If handled right. Internet handled like a utility, not a commodity. No more ISPs going under and customers being sold to another ISP without the user knowing. You could just be given a group of IPs and could use them anywhere withing a given area for wireless or a connection at a variety of sources.
Now I work for an ISP so I know this would have me looking for a new job, but it would be a cool idea if done right. We just have to keep AOL and MSN out of the mix.
I administer a number of local Real Estate, Real Estate Agency and Realtor web sites in my area (lane county, oregon). Including http://www.home-tour.com. Basically the problem is MLS, the company that handles almost all real estate sales, is run by realtors and they don't want to be left out of a job (and I don't blame them). Besides there is a lot of information available that a realtor might know that a individual might not. So almost all real estate sites make it a point to get the person to get a hold of a realtor when they are looking at a specific house. Also most of these sites are are basically advertising.

Yep, they are basically a step above care salesmen, but not by much.
