The best way for Windows users to compute untroubled (or less troubled) is to uninstall Sophos. Our IT department switched to Sophos about a year ago and we in development have had nothing but problems. My machine barely runs now. The updates every three hours render the machine unusable until Sophos completes its download. We get off easy. Most departments get updates every hour. I would glady run the risk of infection by having no anti-virus software over using Sophos. The lost productivity clearing one virus pales in comparison to the daily loss caused by this "tool." If you are forced to use Sophos I recommend setting exclusion on all your drives for on-access and on-demand. This will slightly improve the performance of your machine. Don't bother excluding file types. It takes too long and Sophos clears your exclusions periodically. Does Sophos even work? I've never had it detect anything. Either I don't get infected or Sophos doesn't work. We always here a Windows box will be infected within seconds of connecting to the internet. So, why doesn't Sophos report all these attacks? I'm probably rambling at this point, but I really hate this product. I felt strongly enough to make this my first Slashdot post since Feb 2005.
I've noticed recently it takes a very long time for my DirecTivo to finally respond after clicking the Record button and confirming it. The delay is roughly the timespan of a commercial. Have any of you noticed this delay?
This has nothing to do with sex and violence. Some marketing executive realized there was an untapped market. Do you really think a bunch of "Christians" got together and said, "Hey lets form a rock group" and thus Christian Rock was born? Somewhere a recording industry genius figured out the record companies weren't selling Rock and or a Roll(use Rev. Lovejoy voice) records to "Christian" teens. That's how Christian Rock was born and it's the same reason for this. The "Christian" kiddies aren't allowed to play mainstream games, so we'll make games they are allowed to play. There are Christian ISPs, Christian money market funds, and my favorite the Christian Outlet Store. What does one buy at a Christian Outlet Store? Factory-second Christians?
You might think absolute zero is cold, but when you add the Wind Chill Factor, watch out!

Spider-Goat, Spider-Goat
Does things a regular spider won't
Spins a web, eats a shoe
Better watch out he'll eat you too
Look out! Here comes the Spider-Goat!
_
Is he strong? Listen, Mac!
He just ate radioactive crack.
Can he swing from a thread?
Take a look overhead.
Hey there, there goes the Spider-Goat!
_
In the chill of night,
On a pile of trash
Like a streak of light
He'll give you a rash
_
Spider-Goat, Spider-Goat
Friendly neighborhood Spider-Goat
Wealth and fame, he's ignored
Tin cans are his reward
_
To him, life is a great big trash dump
Wherever there's a drainage sump
You'll find the Spider-Goat!
Perhaps IT is a robotic prostitute. Think about it. Two models, Metro & Pro and "It will be an alternative to products that are dirty, expensive, sometimes dangerous and often frustrating, especially for people in the cities."
What if we tattoo barcodes on the back of the necks of each candidate and let the voters scan them with a Cue:Cat. Haha! Bet you didn't think you would see Cue:Cat mentioned during this discussion.
I wish I could block Allen/Robb (VA Senate Seat) Campaign commercials from my TV. Based on these ads, I believe Pee Wee Herman could win as a third party candidate on the platform of: "I know you are, but what am I?"
I recall there was a lot of controversy about the Cassini probe, prior to its launch. Most of this concerned its fuel, which I think was plutonium.
The funniest thing I heard about the controversy was when some idiot in the fashion industry called the JPL to complain about using the designer, Cassini's name without permission. The idiot was politely informed the spacecraft was named after a 15th. century astronomer and not the sycophant's boss.
I got a call the other night. The caller explained to me that with the Verizon "takeover" I would be recieving a new bill. On my Verizon bill I would see certain amounts of savings on various services and I would now have my long distance service included on the same Verizon bill. The long distance charges would be listed as business options. Although I'm sure it would be Business Options if I saw it in print rather than over the phone. Next, I was told I would be getting a call in 10 minutes to verify that the caller had performed her job. At no time was I told the call was from a company other than Verizon. I asked if they were changing my long distance carrier. The caller replied, "Yes, I told you it was Business Options." I then lost my calm demeanor and unleashed many explitives. The caller hung up on me.
Here's the strange part, they didn't block caller ID. The company's actual name is Crusade Communications. Their number is (219)756-8735. How lame can a slamming company be that doesn't even block caller ID?
Now that I have posted their number, I must say, I do not condone crank phone calls, phone phreaking, or harassment of any kind. Did I mention their phone number is (219)756-8735?
I want to thank the many posters who recommended having your local provider freeze your account. I called Verizon and froze mine today.

Unfortunately, they'll still be waiting for the election results from 2000.

Would hiding out in the Texas Air National Guard during a war still count as service?
