Who cares if Linux/unix/some-os-non-windows goes mainstream or not. You are just different, as you say..... you just want to get work done. Personally, I think it is fun config'ing a window manager (sawfish is good at this.. ) and doing some cool keyboard combination that gets your work done faster and easier. Whenever I sit in front of a Windows box, my productivity goes way down from all the crowded windows.. no native multiple desktop support, no pager, etc.
Im sure future Enlightenment releases will support the new NET Window Manager hints and the current Enlightenment supports GNOME well. Sawfish/Sawmill just goes perfectly with gnome panel, nautilus
oh shutup. stop going into meta-discussions about discussions on why slashdot moderation sucks and implying that all slashdot users are part of one herd and that we're all Windows bashers. If you want to rate articles there's always Kuro5hin.
Windows 2000/XP is a great desktop OS.. and Linux/Unix is a great server OS. Each one has its strengths/weaknesses.
If your band didnt 'make it big' maybe it's because they're making shit music that nobody wants to see live? People are STUPID if they think they can live off being in a band without HARD WORK! And even then, it's not guaranteed, just like life. Always have a backup skill..
if you're thinking of using Mandrake on a 486 or 386, you have better things to think about (i.e upgrading your computer). use a different distro, slackware comes to mind, with a slim window manager like blackbox and it just might be usable.
are you running kernel 2.4.9? the linux 2.4 kernel's have been killing my swap partition, always consuming but never releasing swap even when I didnt have X running. 2.4.10 is a major improvement, I still havent gone to swap yet. my computer is a 750amd/384mb of RAM, though.
Just buy more RAM. You want features? Well they dont come 'free'. If you dont want flashy programs or utilities, stick to console. Prices are so cheap, 128mb can be bought for 20 dollars..

so apps dont have to be recompiled
and the library can be loaded on runtime.
>Why not just patch GDK directly?
there are patches to enable aa for gtk/gdk and they worked for 90% of the apps i tried, gedit crashing almost instantly.
also gtk/gdk 1.3 already has aa support, and so will 1.4 when it's released.

2 months ago i bought a used pentium 120 with a pci nic already in it for $30 at the local chop shop.. you wouldnt belive how many companies just throw these computers away.
dude, do you know how remote X works like? all the processing is done on the client side, YOUR computer is the server which just displays netscape, kde, etc. yes it's weird terminology. make sure the computer thats running the apps has shitloads of memory (256mb is what.. 40$?) if you have more than 5 users also invest in a switch/100mb network

first post for linux! probably too late for that , but it's been fun learning about unix through linux about 4 years ago and I use it at home and at work. always stable, has NEVER crashed on me, and cool desktops like KDE and GNOME.. what more do you need? congrats linus.
It's not THAT hard, you will have to find a broadband(DSL, prolly) reseller that will be the middle man between you and the local telco. and then you'll have to find a bigger ISP to be your backbone. We are partnered with IP Communications for DSL, and they do an good job (no i dont work for them, but I work at an ISP that is partnered with them)
they barely started the discussion list today.
cause these people who write the sites need to EAT..
i've read that alan cox has made a 'make rpm' target in the Makefile's. it might just be for only his -ac kernel's though.. not the official ones.
huh? check out news.gnome.org
theres a new gnumeric release out with new, cool features =)

what the fuck!? taco creams in his panties over konqueror and kde.. i think gnome vs kde stories are about even, now a days.
by supplying patches.. DUH.. you can even download them too.

.. and of course this has EVERYTHING to do with gnome 2..

it's a ./configure --help option.. you probably need to download some other libraries, though.
yeah, just let them rewrite every library that has the features they want, into one single program. smart thinking, huh?
