why? why should linux take over? it does what it needs to do for A LOT of people already
as a server+desktop+whatever already. the only thing that should have been standardized was the gui toolkit since it's a waste of memory to load both gtk and qt (i usually have konqueror and Evolution open all the time)
if this was a 1.0 release then for sure i'd probably be
great to put the headline on the front page, but it's only
at.80, with not THAT many improvements+features.
imap using kde blows. there is no 'only list subscribed folders' option like there is in Evolution. using debian uw-imapd it lists ALL my folders in $HOME !!
the big phone companies will always survive. independent DSL resellers wont. do you think the baby bells will want to let go of their precious phone lines anytime soon? They'd rather pay fines than be fair and have any competition at all.
I work at an ISP and Southwestern Bells takes their sweet time fixing DSL phone line problems that aren't theirs.
well, im sure (if you live in the US) that shots are necessary to enter school. Most of the shots are for immunization for measles, polio, and other childhood diseases.
A smart, fascist system administrator would block out ALL outgoing ports cept for http and maybe ftp, so your proxy trick doesnt go around all firewalls.
Easy.. just setup a cgi proxy on your computer at home or somewhere else listenin on port 80. you connect to that computer (the corporate firewall SHOULD allow at least port 80 outgoing) and then you get a text field asking which site you want to go to. the proxy program should be smart enough to filter out the http headers so the pages dont look suspicious
Debian Stable.. hard to administer? You just install the packages using apt (which is a no brainer to use) and then edit text configuration files like you regularly would on any *nix box. Yes, Stable doesnt have current packages of many programs BUT that dramatically decreases the number of bugs in the stable distribution.
are you using any linux kernel 2.4.9 or higher? i remember 2.4.8 NOT releasing swap even when i had loads of memory. it was taking more than half of my 500mb swap partition. and i was leaving X running overnight with the daily cron jobs. with the recent kernels, i havent had that many problems with RAM or swap

then just switch to testing... at work we run debian testing on our mail/web server. testing is about a month or so behind the real cutting edge (unstable) and is tested enough for me. so far, so good.
for the love of God.. DONT! Remote installs will get you in trouble. Ive seen it done with Sun boxes but.. I took a specially trained Sun person to do that.
well, if it works now, then theres no need to upgrade, that's how i see it. you could install redhat 7.1 on another faster computer and then put the hard drive back to the older computer. should boot up just fine (slow startup though..)
signal 11 gcc errors are almost hardware related problems. just earlier compiling pine would give me a sig 11 error.. and the load was barely at 1.x. underclocking the cpu a little lower cleared up that problem (this computer was a mail/web/pop server) and stressed it to a 9.x load avg with no segfaults
gee.. whats 30 bucks to increase the computer's ram by 128mb's? and im pretty sure it does REALLY require 64mb's.. probably if you do the GUI install, not the text install. and even then if it loads startup bloat you can use ntsysv and stop any daemons that load. for your situation, i'd try setting up cheap X terminals instead of a full fledged installs.

the ptracebug and symlink attack only can work if you have a local account. and even then I tried the ptrace exploit out on my debian 2.4.10 box and it didnt work (probably cause the readme said to adjust some vaules in a #define.

well, GNOME isnt really big on innovation on the interface part, more on the backend that nobody really sees. It pretty much steals the best ideas from every good operating system's interface and melds it together.

Jesus Christ.. how the FUCK did you get moderated to +5 ? I havent had a segfault with GNOME or KDE in months (running the latest versions) Maybe you used RedHat 6.0 which came with GNOME 1.0 or something and based your rant on that.
Yes Aqua is nice, but KDE or GNOME arent slowing down, and will soon catch up.
no, it's based on RPM, and you have to do some rpm magic like getting an rpmrc from another machine and doing some weird commands to integrate it into Solaris. this was documented on the ximian mailing list, though. after that annoyance, Red Carpet worked like a charm.

yes, Gtk 2 has AA already builtin (unlike the gdkxft hack for gtk 1.2) like the latest qt. check out this screenshot:

they gotta make money somehow, dude. giving away free software ISNT one way of making money.

Are you saying it's alright for them to tell you to shutup just because their profit margin might go down? Im suspecting you own some Apple stock..

It's natural for humans to want to survive.
did you take your shots before you had to go to school? why? people 300 years ago usually didnt live past 35.
