True. Adelphia will rent you a 4-port Zyxel 944 Router if you request the "home networking" subscription. I am not sure how much more it costs, however.
Adelphia does not prohibit you doing this on your own - they just do not support it.
I bought a copy from Wal-Mart, mainly to support Mandrake, and also because it's been a while since I actually bought a Linux CD (RH 5.2, & Mandrake 6.1).
Ugh. The update option is VERY broken, do NOT use it!
On a clean drive though, I didn't have much trouble at all. I think a Windows user who has a fair to good knowledge of his/her system, and is willing to learn, might do ok with this distro. On the other hand, "Joe SixPack" will be screaming bloody murder as he destroys his PC trying to get this "linux thang" to work...
I think maybe this could end up being a bad move for Mandrake. Time will tell.
MCSE? I've seen MCSE's who barely know the first thing about networking. I would say an applicant's experience would be much better than Minesweeper Consultant and Solitaire Expert;)
Loki Games president said in a recent interview, IIRC, that Loki has begged Blizzard to allow them to port Diablo to Linux. They always said no, even though there was zero risk to Blizzard. Perhaps they are doing an in-house port, or perhaps they have no interest. Time will tell...
I downloaded gnucash out of curiosity, and tried to compile. The configure script bombed out with a "Can't find Swig" error. I was thinking, "what the fsck is SWIG?!" I didn't notice anything on the Gnucash pages about needing this - it's something they should include.
I then went looking on Google, and found it. I thought I'd post a link for anyone who gets this error and, like me, had never heard of Swig before.
Further digging on the Gnucash site helped me find out that you don't really need Swig, and they might be changing the configure script so that it doesn't bomb if you don't have it.
I've been using Star Office at home for most of a year. I can say that I have yet to have a problem opening ANY Microsoft Office 97 (or older) document, be it Word or Excel. The calendar portion of Star seems to have the same functionality as Outlook, except for the Virus-friendly scripting. There is some scripting support, but I've never investigated it. Who needs it, really?
Sun is getting ready to release Star Office 5.2, from the preview pages it looks good. They claim the M$ Office filters are much improved, and will support Office 2000. I am looking forward to checking it out. If it's as good as they say, I am going to try to convert our office at work to Star Office. We are currently a M$-Only workplace, including Outlook and Exchange, and it really sucks. The "ILOVEYOU" script brought our Exchange server to it's knees for days.
By corporate decree, our company is forced to use Outlook + Exchange for all email. Of course, we got hit hard by the "ILOVEYOU" bug. I thought it all amusing, and enjoyed looking at the actual code. I am not a programmer at all, yet I saw how easy it would be to modify this simple program to be MUCH nastier: 1) forward every message from your "Sent" folder to everyone in your address book (a corporate nightmare: think about the CEO's sent emails being read by everyone in the company) 2) after that happy chore, prowl the network shares and deltree *.* 3) finally, as a parting shot, format c:
I figure someone will do this eventually. Luckily, I run Linux.:)
"How can you preserve history and learn from it, when the very act of preservation and dissemination of abandoned historical material is illegal? "
You hit it on the head. Remember that TW/AOL, Disney, et al. will be glad to teach you history - from their point of view of course. Big Brother is here, only he's not a govt, he's several corporations. But then again, they own our govt, so what's the difference?:\
I noticed with some amusement and disgust that the MPAA propaganda page states that copying a DVD for your own personal use is illegal. Since when? What a load of #%@$%$%!
I agree with the other posts, what is the status on the DDOS attacks on./? How's the Micro$oft thing going?

"Your honor, it's clear that the defendant illegally reverse-engineered Windows 2001, and then posted this illegal web page. We ask for the maximum penalty under law." "What did the web page say, exactly?" "Windows Sucks" "Guilty, as charged. Take him away."
On a more serious note, I hope that Andover will stand up to Microsoft. The DMCA was passed on behalf of corporations, not the American public.
I agree with another poster: it's a damn sad state of affairs that we (Americans) have to look to other countries to find freedom of speech.
What will happen? Microsoft will start making noises about moving to Canada/The Far East or somewhere other than the USA. This will frighten the DOJ/Govt, who will then be more lenient with them. Also, I believe that companies like Aetna, who have millions of dollars of 401K money tied up in Microsoft stock, will put pressure on the Govt to slap M$ on the wrist, and we will see nothing happening.

Insightful?
What's insightful about someone who doesn't get humor?
Did I miss anything?
;)
Yes, you did.
7) Watch the Microsoft apologists come out of the woodwork like bugs when you lift a rotted log
We don't need to have a judge to force Micros~1 IIS servers offline - we have Code Red, Nimda, etc etc et al worms to do that for us.
Thank you for the addition of some logic and level-headedness to a topic that usually generates nothing but emotionalism and flame wars.
It's nice to see there are a few people (still) out there who are not in a hysterical panic, and are willing to research the facts themselves.
If we could only get it out there like a mantra-
_There_is_no_global_warming_
Actually, this may be what Micros~1 has in mind for a "safe return". After all, they are selling bits, and they do believe that copying is evil...
I hope this story is true, because every time this sort of thing happens, one more PHB might see the light.
The original was Mandrake 7.0. I manually updated it to 7.1 via the net.
If you do the update from the CD, it's murder. But downloading an ISO I've heard works good...

Yeah, they mention Slashdot alright... but, erm..

I know. It works, but still
No kidding!
I bought one of these on a whim, and decided to try an upgrade at home. Bad Idea.
I am still trying to sort the mess out.
Urk.
I thought from the headline they were organ-harvesting or something.
... does this mean we will see you on the Jerry Springer show soon?

Anyhow, here is the link to Swig

I can go with this plan! ;-)
I don't think a break-up will happen.

I too signed up for the email version. I also got the email, linking me to a Windows-Only E-Book, with no mention of a PDF.
I dashed off a polite letter to Barnes & Noble, explaining to them that not everyone with a computer runs Windows. No reponse as of yet...
