    they don't change the way bridges are built after the engineers and politicians sign off on the plan.

    you do the same thing... does that mean they'll be constrained to the initial project? Yes. So what... it will get done and then you can change it later AFTER it works.

    Further, this would encourage such people to spend more time in planning rather then just greenlighting things with no consideration.

    The status quo is unacceptable. You have experience in the field? Great... tell us how to fix it. Don't tell me it can't be fixed.

    Contractors will give you two basic choices for contracts.

    1. Pay for my time. Do what every you want, change what ever you want... but you pay for my time.

    2. Specify the project in exact detail and the whole thing will get an over all bid to those specifications. Changes cost extra and may require an additional contract.

    I'm assuming the government keeps going with option 1 and I'm thinking most of these issues would go away if they went with option 2.

    the only way you get hacked is if someone hacks YOU. Which is a lot less likely then someone hacking facebook or whatever. If the NSA etc wants to get access they have to penetrate you specifically. The big dragnet operations will largely pass you by if you host it yourself.

    You could write a bit of code that automatically translates file paths between operating systems.

    Have the paths be a variable and have that variable go through a subroutine that checks the OS and other relevant issues to make sure the path information is accurate.

    As to receiving hate email, I don't receive much either but then I go out of my way to make that impossible. I do receive a fair amount of hate on any internet forum that discusses topics of religion, philosophy, economics, or often science as the case may be... On the purely technical forums I generally don't get any heat.

    But the instant a topic is started that involves people's identities or world views... Boom. Hate everywhere.

    And what would you have me do with it? Run away ceding the argument to anyone willing to drop an F bomb? Call for the help of the admin and be branded a coward, weak, cry baby, etc? Should I simply remain polite even with someone spitting in my face. Allowing them to color every point with invective while I hold to nothing but a purely logical position devoid of emotion or reprisal?

    or should I engage them on fronts and attempt to rip apart their likely immature ego at the same I rip apart their argument?

    Choose any of the above or possibly something I didn't cite. That's your choice. But don't fault me for engaging. Its what I do.

    And here someone is going to accuse me of being an internet tough guy just for saying I believe in holding my ground when challenged. Because not running away apparently is a sign of empty and immature bravado.

    The counter arguments are as tedious as they are intellectually vacuous.

    Take me to court and I'll successfully argue that I just drove away.

    You want to play stupid legal games with me? I'm perfectly happy to engage on any front. In the courtroom or otherwise.

    And I don't say that because I think I'm tough or particularly good at fighting. I'm just clever enough to know how to win. And if push comes to shove... so be it.

    As to nuclear war... you've totally missed the point. the point is that if given the choice between bending over and taking it up the ass or fighting to the death. Men generally choose the latter.

    And we'll carry that right up to Armageddon.

    As to my accomplishments, I'm not claiming credit for anything or trying to impress you. Why after all would I care if you're impressed or not?

    I'm explaining rather that I'm not some skittish herd animal. You flash your teeth at me and I'm not running away.

    I notice that a lot of old android apps work just fine. So why not just use an old IDE that is stable and then just release apps that aren't up to the lastest patches. Who cares.

    Again, there are a lot of old apps that work just fine so what's the difference?

    so long as the program works and is compatible who needs to bother with the new sexy thing?

    You've apparently never played an online video game, driven in busy city traffic with your window open, ridden on a bus, or employed teenagers.

    Do any of the above and you're going to deal with a fair amount of swearing on a regular basis.

    These compliance systems are not standardized? You have to shift to entirely different compliance regimes on a regular basis?

    Because if that's what's happening, that is the problem. Not the compliance systems but that they change so often and are not standardized.

    If they are standardized then you can automate your interactions with them.

    I didn't leave him anywhere. What do you want me to do? I've gotten into literal screaming matches with people over this issue and was able to turn most of my family around 180 degrees.

    beyond that, what do you expect me to do? Protest day after day in front of some federal building? I've got bills to pay. I can't do that. What about sending letters to politicians? Already done.

    What else? Want me to go all 80s action movie on the issue and sneak into russia to smuggle him out?

    Get real.

    The US on so many issues is waiting... waiting for the morons currently in power to be timed out of office so we can have a chance at getting a new group of people that hopefully less idiotic.

    That's it. that's all we've got at this point. We've got stupid leaders in office and they're going to sit there being stupid until they're removed. And given the factional nature of our political system even people that know the current officials are stupid will support them because they're more opposed to whomever the opposition will put in power even if they're not as stupid.

    Its called politics and I have no power to change it beyond my little votes and protests. There are 300 million people in this country and I'm just one guy.

    What exactly do you expect me to do here?

    Married life like any fluid social interaction requires at least high level AI and wouldn't be convincing over long periods of time.

    We're talking about programming compliance. Its a totally different question.

    Brother, I question whether you know what a programmer really is in the first place.

    Can you describe the problem? Clearly? Explain it to the computer. Automate it. You know what you're talking about? You have a problem? Good... solve it. that's what programmers do.

    I can't relate... anything that is repeated over and over again with known rules can be programmed. I've never seen anything that couldn't.

    Its okay to say someone is a "suspected terrorist" with no hard evidence in the same way the police can suspect you of murder even though they can't really prove it yet. Suspicion doesn't mean you get hit with hellfire missiles from a drone of course. That should require proof especially if they're americans.

    That said, if you're walking around in a war zone talking to terrorists... I wouldn't blame the pentagon for lighting you up at a certain point. If you're going to go to those places, at least tell someone first so you don't get people's imaginations running wild.

    We have to keep in mind this is war. If you went to Nazi Germany and started hanging around with Nazi leaders and military personnel I'm not going to feel bad if you got killed one afternoon by a B-17 carpet bombing the area. Its war.

    Kindly don't associate with the enemy until hostilities have concluded or at least signal to both sides that you're a non-combatant and those that care will try to avoid taking you in the cross fire. Short of that... via con dios.
