do you want to beat conservatives? --- You misunderstand. I want to beat conservatives *at their own game*.
a frequent criticism of conservative thought after 9/11 is that you don't beat terrorism by giving up our rights and freedoms, that is, you don't beat terrorism by giving up that which makes us better than terrorists --- Which we, as a nation, have already done. Freedoms are gone in the name of "safety".
i'm sure you can understand that. so why can't you understand that you don't beat conservatives by acting like them? --- Because playing "nice" doesn't work when the other guy is a bully. If the only thing your enemy understands is violence, then killing them with kindness achives no end except to provide them with yet more incentive to bash your face in.
You're assuming the other guy is smart enough to eventually "get it". He's not.
The only way to defeat this kind of thing is either parody it to an extreme (which often doesn't work, after all how many racists were moved by "Let This Be Your Last Battlefield"?), or hit them over the head with the exact same vitriol, just turned around 180 degrees and let them know how it feels when the shoe is on the other foot. They may still be too dumb to get it, but at least we've achieved stalemate rather than constantly losing ground.
I don't understand why I can't play the same game 'conservatives' do.
For example: "drug users should go to jail, unless they are fat, conservative, white, radio talk-show hosts." FAUX NEWS is always on about anything the liberals fail at, but when their boys do the exact same shit, somehow it smells like roses to them.
For example: Fox News reports that protesting our presence in Iraq, or displaying pictures of George W. Bush as Hitler is un-American, unpatriotic, and treason. However, holding "tea bag parties" or going into a Town hall meeting with a gun, or holding pictures of Obama as Hitler, well, that's an American right of expression.
How can you claim that *anything* which is self-contrary is a moral and logical fail in POLITICS? The whole point of politics, near as I can figure is to be two-faced about everything. How can the right wing preach moral superiority when they are just as dirty as everyone else? How is it that the 'conservatives' who continously bash gay rights turn out to be full-blown NAMBLA members?
Obviously, you haven't figured out that moral and logical fail is the entirely of politics. It wouldn't BE politics without it.
And then the American public might actually respect their elected officials. Woah. I just made my head spin. Gotta sit down there for a minute....
.... And meantime, our elected officials are getting hand jobs in airport bathroom stalls, are "hiking the Appalician trail", and soliciting young male pages through monitored chat systems. And most of them recently, have been FROM the ingnorant, anti-science side of the aisle (i.e., Republicans).
Now, I realize that politicians are too dumb to realize when they *are* the pot calling the kettle black (witness Florida Gov. Christ (R), who provides state-sponsored health-care for children in his state, yet opposes the "Goverment option" for federal health-care coverage because it's "socialism"), but geeeze-louise, when the hell is someone going to call these guys on being liars (aside from whatshisname who yelled at Obama during the healthcare speech).
So, the dude at the NSF is surfing pr0n and cost taxpayers $58,000 -- what was the cost to taxpayers for Mark Foley, or the latest sex-scandal on Capital Hill? And why is it that the higher and bigger the politcal jerk is, the more he seems to think that he can have 4 mistresses and that won't affect his chances of being re-elected?
They all claim innocence and say they are going to stay in office. And they often do stay in office, although the wife usually files for divorce a week later. So, what was your problem again with a dude surfing pr0n?
The internet isn't some pidgeon you can just dump stuff in, it's a series of tubes....
I sent an email to my staff via pidgeon and it arrived faster than the actual email sent via the network. That's because the bird only had to fly across the room. Of course, I could have just yelled my message, but this is the future... Where's my flying car? Now get off my lawn.
Loius Vuitiion (or whatever the hell his name is), makes an over-priced, uber-expensive handbag, and then complains when knock-offs come around? Isn't that capitalism? I also notice that this dude and his bag of lawyers sue or jail everyone selling the stuff.
But not the guys making the stuff.
Because his handbags come out of the same Chinese factory as the knock-offs. That's why most people will never notice that they *are* knock-offs. During daylight hours, the factory produces legitimate "on the books" merchandise, and then the night shift takes over, making the exact same stuff, but "off the books", which are then sold cheap, and shipped off to the rest of the world.
Legitimate copyright holder screams bloody murder, and sues and jails everyone, except the factory, who have already made their profit by selling the knock-offs to the distribution channel. And the guy can't sue or jail the factory in China, because during the day, they make his "real" merchandise.
The Chinese have figured out capitalism pretty well for a communist country. They've got capitalsim down better than the USA, that's for sure.
If you want more advances, call your congressman and tell them that you want increased funding to the NSF, NIH, NIST, DOE, and NASA for basic research. Then sit back ten or twenty years.
Because it will take Congress ten or twenty years to pass a bill that increases funding to the NSF, NIH, NIST, DOE, and NASA. Let's face it. Progess has slowed because it takes an act of Congress to perform an act of Congress.
Actually progress has slowed because we haven't discovered any new energy sources since fission. We keep talkiing about fusion, but nobody's made it happen. When we find a powerful new energy source, technological progress will boom.
You know, I was thinking the same thing.. In fact it looks like "The Last Airbender" movie will have to avoid the use of the word "Avatar" to prevent confusion, since my guess is both movies will be out around the same time.
And already being familiar with the airbender plotline and universe, I'm looking forward to that film far more than I am to Cameron's crap-fest. His last good film was Terminator 2.
Cocaine is NOT a harmless drug, it kills people and robs them of a liveliehood at a far greater rate than almost any other drug. It is insanely addictive and knowing a couple of friends who have struggled with it I can only hope for your own sake you never try it.
Sorry, but I could say the exact same thing about liquor. Ever been to an AA meeting? Alcohol ruins more lives than any other drug in the USA. And yet it's legal.
To Bing's credit, searching for "Miserable Failure" still links to an image of George Bush. Google has substituted something else. Go Bing! At least we know Bing's results are web, circa 2004.
I'm with you. My commute is about 45 miles per day. On Saturdays, I drive into Jersey City and also into Manhattan, which is probably 30-40 round trip. When I think about NOT burning gas while I'm sitting in traffic for 1 hour waiting to get into the Holland Tunnel, I see the need for this vehicle.
I can plug in every night when I get home (I just ran electric into the garage so I can run my power tools), so the car will be "full" every AM.
As a commuter, grocery-getter, and NYC traffic tamer, I could easily put 100,000 miles on this car in 7 years.
I'm a "victim" of the NYC Board of Education, and even we had "1984" in High School. We also had "The Stranger" and "Candide" due to an exceptionally liberal English teacher.
Never mind all the people talking about gangs and organized crime. The *REAL* reason they switch to credit card payments over coin-operated is to remove the CASH from the equation. Cash requires people to collect it from the meters, and then those people who collect it also end up stealing some.
By using credit card payments, you eliminate the coin collectors, so you don't have to employ those people anymore, and you also eliminate having to monitor your collectors so they don't steal from you.
Look at any large company's cafeteria, and you'll see everyone pays by swiping their company ID. This is because they eliminated the cash that was being stolen by the underpaid cafeteria staff.
So, when a stolen laptop gets sold on eBay, why isn't the CEO and Board of Directors of eBay hauled off to jail? Why hasn't the owner of the stolen laptop sued the pants off eBay? Isn't eBay involved with "illegal behavior"?
ebay just facilitates the sale between teo individuals. eBay does "sell" the item, nor do they "warehouse" or "own" the item.
Similarly, The Pirate Bay doesn't "host" the file(s), movies, MP3s, or anything. They facilitate a transaction between uploaders and downloaders, but TPB doesn't "own" the file, doesn't sell the file, doesn't "warehouse" the file.
If TPB is involved in "illegal behavior", then similarly, eBay is just as involved, and perhaps even more so, as eBay deals in tangible physical property that can be "stolen", but I don't see an army of lawyers queueing up to go after eBay.
So, this *explains* how Desslok could survive being blown to smithereens every season and then come back next season for more punishment. "I do so hate a man who laughs at his own jokes..... HAAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA"
And how exactly, would you have stopped the bailouts?
The government works for those corporations, most of the people who made those decisions were former CEOs of those same comapanies. Notice how Bush's henchmen, who started the whole "bailout" thing, were former Goldman Sachs people? And which company benefitted from the others going under? Goldman Sachs.
Oddly enough, those on Slashdot who scream about the 2nd amendment, never took up their guns and killed Congress and the President when they should have. Our country was stolen from under our noses, and the 2nd amendment people were too worried about Obama and his funny name or that he might "take away their guns" to notice that the very purpose for which there even is a 2nd amendment, was pushed out in front of them, and they didn't do shit.
I'll bet you that due to this story, airline security won't let you take 'em on planes anymore as they are potential explosive devices! (certainly more explosive than toothpaste!).
What are we going to do on 12-hr flights now? Watch the damn movie? I *need* my laptop and ipod!
I assume they'll make it legal for Preists to rape alter boys?
This "Church" has blasphemized itself over the years with scandal after scandal. And that's only the shit we KNOW about. How is it that they can't clean their own house before intruding on the rights of others? Do they not follow their own teachings?
This needs to go on "Seen on Slash". This clearly a "best of slashdot" entry if there ever was one. Best post I've read in a long while. Scathing humor, done properly. Tip of the hat to you sir. If only the rest of Slashdot could write as well.
Yes, how did "smash" miss that one? It truly boggles the mind.
You would figure with all the crazies on the internet (that we MUST protect our children from), that sooner or later, some hot-head with a gun and enough technical know-how to track down a spammer would start a spammer hunt and start mowing them down.
It's ONLY when we have a spammer-serial-killer that spammers will stop. Suing them doesn't work, there's a guy out there that makes a living just suing spammers in small claims court. Laws and even government crackdowns don't work. It will only be when spammers live in fear for their lives and the lives of their families that they will consider another line of work.
What's annoying is that they've gotten so adept at hiding their identities, they are probably the only people on the internet who don't get spam, furthermore, they are probably the least likely to be targeted by the govt-nannyism of the web.
All in the name of selling snake oil. PT Barnum wouldn't believe how true his law is or that it's grown by a factor of a 1000...
