  2. The legal standard for copyright is... on Psystar Claims Apple Forgot To Copyright Mac OS · · Score: 1

..."fixed in a tangible medium of expression".

According to my copyright law classes I took in college the instant any creative idea was fixed into a tangible medium of expression it was copyrighted. Registering it just allowed for extra protections such as statutory damages and court costs + attorneys fees. If you don't register your copyright and have to sue to protect it, you are only able to get injunctions, and actual damages.

They stopped printing either the date/time of funerals, or the address of the deceased because people would be robbed. It was like obituaries were publishing to the community when a house would be vacant and able to be jacked.

This same sort of publicizing someone's death on the Net could potentially lead to identity fraud.

  6. USB Drives don't last forever! on Arranging Electronic Access For Your Survivors? · · Score: 1

According to an expert I met at a con a few months back from my understanding a USB storage device must be power cycled every 1-3 years in order to retain it's memory. Apparently modern day flash memory degrades over time and if it doesn't get powered up yuo can start to have serious holes in your data.

  14. Re:Your tax money at work on Senate Judiciary Committee Approves Copyright Cops · · Score: 1

No. The government is creating artificially high barriers to entry into the marketplace.....at the request of big business.

Big business LIKES big government because big government can regulate and legislate in favor of big business.

  15. Good try - but not quite on Senate Judiciary Committee Approves Copyright Cops · · Score: 1

Monopolies are usually the result of big government. Monopolies which are not, are usually short lived.

Why? Big business likes big government. Big government can legislate and regulate in favor of big business thus blocking competition from small business. You don't think that big business actually minds all of those health and safety regulations do they? Of course not! It keeps the small guys from ever entering the market place

I am sure that McDonalds has an entire department of attorneys, accountants, and food prep experts to handle food safety compliance for every single law that exists. The mom and pop restaurant has to figure out how it goes on their own assuming they can afford to

Big business has even lobbied big government to prevent farmers from checking their own cattle for mad-cow disease. If government wasn't so big and pervasive then they would not be able to punish farmers from testing their stock for mad-cow at the request of big business.

Try starting your own phone company sometime. HA! You have to get permission from the government to do so, and it's guaranteed you probably won't be allowed to.

Why? Because big government is a tool of big business. If government isn't big, then it can't be a tool of big business.

  16. Consider the music industry on Photoshop Allows Us To Alter Our Memories · · Score: 1

"Now everyone can record their band in a home studio for under $25k worth of decent recording equipment. We will no longer have good music"

Do realize that many art pieces are copyrighted and are not allowed to be photographed without specific permission. One is not allowed to take photos of sculptures, paintings, pictures, photographs, etc without permission from the copyright holder.

That's why you cannot take photos inside the Biltmore Estate. It's not the venue that objects, it's the fact that so many art pieces are not copyright cleared.

The problem is that most governments do not recognize these rights, and the government in the US tends to ignore its founding documents more often than not.
