... but unfortunately isn't so. If the judge decides NASA has to pay this could cause serious trouble for future space exploration, for as far as I know most of the lunar and martian surface is already sold. If everybody from now on can claim money if something touches "his" property, this could possibly cause second thoughts. better to say "please place a ticket on our vehicle (harrharr) - and we will remove it as soon as possible". On the other hand side wasn't there a treaty signed sometimes in the 60's that forbade the claim for extraterrestrial property?
Well, how do you build up a reliable irc database. I mean there are many servers and bots and so on in the irc, and most of them deal with warez and therefore are only up temporary. So if google really wants to build a irc search engine they have to find a way to get rid of the dead links, and also from links that point to illegal copy's (you can be sued for pointing to warez, can't you (see the deCss case)). I personally would be glad, for the irc is a little bit, well, unstructured, and a search engine would definitely do good, but the problems building a database and interface based thereon seem enomous to me.
whats so bad about that? First of all, you will still have the capability to run linux if you install it "manually", so they don't actually drop the OS support, but they drop the "preset" configuration. so, even if you can't choose linux as an installable system, you can still install it while using a "generic" (or custom or whatever) setting. On the other hand VPC isn't the only pc emulator, i personally use VMWare that emulates a windows2000 when i acutally have a linux box.
hmm, i just installed iTunes and wanted to take a look to the music store. I'm living in Austria and when i wanted to connect to the store a message informed me that this service is not available here. so, does is help when i change the value in the "country" state at the registration or does apple a lookup where the ip adress is registered? furthermore, since i pay by credit card where is the problem with buying music from iTunes Store. if the RIAA is making problems concerning the copyright in different country's, hell, they shoud be glad someone actually buys their music and not downloading it from kazaa.
...this cool invention does survive the time until it can become widespread. At the moment I cannot really see a market for this system other than at the NSA and similar organisations (anybody got a quantum computer out there at the ready?). But as technology rapidly advances it this crypto mehthod could prove quite useful for enterpises and in the long term to all end unsers. We just have to look out that this technology doesn't disappear too soon (maybe a little bit accelerated by the above named organisations who don't like crypo they can quite easily brak or trapdoor)
...apache will spread even farther. i do a lot of web service programming myself, and i have to say that the axis project maintained by a fraction of the apache group made my life a whole lot easier. i don't think that a similar framework exists in the microsoft world (yeah, i know there is.NET, but i mean in the "real" java web service world that is truly portable cross platform)
there might be a little problem with the immediate cutting of the line: how do i get rid of the trojan without internet connection (e.g. to download a path or tool form symantec). it would be better to leave at least one port open for these reasons, and if the computer is clean again the customer can call the isp to be fully able to access the net again.
there are a few good reasons for the faster growth rate in europe. first of all europe's countrys are smaller, and so a single provider can cover a whole country's hotspots without going bancrupt because of hardware costs. here in austria the largest cellular carrier is planing to launch WLAN. as far as i know they are using the antennas they use for gsm transmission also as wlan hotspots. this makes sense especially in cities where the antenna density is quite high. in my opinion customers will prefer that they receive access from a single provider instead of having to make a subscription in every major city. since coverage of all american city's by a single provider is almost not feasible the people will be more sceptical about the WLAN. so, to sum it up: Europe's average small country size is the main reason for the faster spreading of WiFi technology
First they spam us and now they do even infect us with viruses... when will it ever stop? I don't really get it, while spam is increasingly annoying (altough i use a highly customized spam assassin filter i still get about 10 unwanted mails) writing viruses is plainly illegal. But what's the reason for DDoS'ing these sites? The only way to fight the spam is to use mail filters. if people want one they have to customize it themselves to make it actually work.
If the spam keeps increasing as fast as it has in the past few years, the future of mail will be dark... here is my vision: (behold!) you will have a "buddy" list of friendy or coworkers similar to instant messaging services such as ICQ and MSN Messenger and only mails from "thrustworthy" origin gets actually forwarded to you mailbox. not so cool, isn't it? but imho its the only way not to have to delete several dozens of spam a day. (and what annoys me most -> i sometimes accidentially delete mails from friends because they are hidden underneath masses of spam.)
... MacOS has a smoother user interface. If you like a crisp and clean desktop buy a mac. if you work in the design or music business buy a mac. also buy a mac if you have too much money left and want a piece of art. on the other hand side, as to customizing mac os can not compete with linux. also, in my opinion linux has more programs that are freely available (i know that osX is a bsd derivative, but I don't know if you can compile a lot of open source code on a osX platform). I work a lot on linux and mac, and each system has its uses. if you put up a server use linux, of you want to do some design work switch to a mac.
WindowsAE (Advertisement Edition). The basic functionality of phoning home is already implemented in the OS, and the ads will be a "feature" that you can charge
and with the correct software they will be able to provide "proof" that saddam actually had WMD's. Better than letting those robots search for weapons they should be used to help rescue workers in saving lifes. I think the small form factor would make it easy to let them search for survivors under collapsed buildings after earth quakes or - as we saw in Russia lately - help examine tunnels or mine shafts for survivors after accidents. Why does research always drift in the military direction? *sigh*
Few weeks ago there was a topic that discussed the naming of space objects, and I suggested naming the next asteroid that comes near earth "M$ Asteriod XP - XPerience the impact". Well, the space brick didn't hit us, so Microsoft seems to have messed it up again....
will they tax the online time or data that is transmitted. and will i get a refund for unwanted data (like spam) or what? and what if you get you data from another country? or another countryman gets data from you? how come that you should pay for something that is wanted by another guy in a country that doesn't tax data? do i also have to pay for the data sent by a malicious worm? questions over question...
well, i think that there is a certain frame within the weight has to lie so that this couch can recognize you. otherwise it would be funny that, each time you change you clothes (say from t-shirts & shorts to a full sized smoking) the couch gets confused and asks for the new username.
they define exactly what "spam" is, so i can't get sued if one of my mails goes to the wrong recipient. i know that this sounds laughable, but in the u.s. you would surely find a lawyer that wants to make profit out of you.
... produce energy. You can burn old tires, waste, nearly anything that doesn't explode, and you can gain energy out of it. So where is the breakthrough here? Of course it is amusing to produce power out of nuts and their shells (i think the only fraction against it are the squirrels). Is there any ecological or economical advantage over producing power out of other sources?
if you color code the passanger's in the traffic light way (green for "too stupid to be a terrorist"; yellow for "suspect" and red for "oh my god, he has a beard and even more, he wears a turban") and there is a suspected terrorist threat in a location of the u.s. will you deny the "red" passengers transportation? And how do you classyfy the color system? Would be interessting what happens when sombody say's there will be an attack on the white house and 5 planes with "red" passengers are on it's way to Washington DC. will they be rerouted to a save location (Nevada for instance, or maybe even Guantanamo)
as I used to work in the ISP department of a large mobile network provider in Austria I can tell you a little bit about the habits of our company: We used to let the users do the monitoring from external servers, such as ping probes if the server is up, they could look on a web page to see their volume information and so on. Bot we didn't implement e-mail alerting and so on, the only option you had was an occasional SMS. The whole hardeware monitoring (mem usage and so on) was done by the operators inside the company, that went after problems if they occurred and (sometimes:-))) fixed them. But the customer was only informed if either the programs he ran on his server threatened the hole ISP environment or a downtime might occur due to other problems. We did the hardware monitoring with ORCA and the service level monitoring was done with OMNIBUS/NETCOOL. While the amount of logs that were gathered is still impressive, it could be handled and did't cause any crashes or other inconveniences. I have to add that the monitoring was done from other machines, with only a small probe of the above mentioned programs installed, the logs and the monitoring software were kept on different machines.
... it is a wonder the student actually said what he did. for now he is surely registered as a potential nuclear terrorist and propably also as producer of WMD's...
Does the OS have to support this screen? I cant't imagine current operating systems of being able to handle this 3D effect native. Of course, they will supply windows drivers, but to really decide if gnome or kde look better you will propably need a linux driver. i just hope that they will release the architecture and drivers so that also the linux community can participate in the glorious 3D features. furthermore it would be of interest if (provided no drivers are present) the image looks blurry or if it just looks flat 2D.
I mysql would appreciate a laptop featuring this "smoke screen" that was posted here in/. a few weeks ago, imagine, no display you have to flap open, a REALLY slim notebook and the geek factor to have a image to come out of virtually nothing..
the more interesting question would be: can you influence the fungus that it does something useful and not only distort the data randomly... might be useful for encryption if you could find a way to restore the original data with a secure "key"/method/anti-fungus-spray/whatever.
CD and DVD media have a certain lifespan. if you copy them at the end of their lifespan for archive use, will you be subject to the DCMA and can you be pursued by RIAA and MPAA? this would be interesting since the first CD's will reach the age of 20 within a few years/month...
... to be the microsoft way. did you copy it from them?
