Great.. and just when we were starting to look at alternative fuel
This machine isn't about the oil or any kind of fuel. This machine is about recycling all the currently useless plastics piling up in the world's landfills.
The more we recycle what we have currently produced, the less we have to mine and drill.
No, Second Life sucks because it's pointless. If you want to "collaborate" (awful word), call somebody on the phone. Send them an email. Write them a letter. Why do you need a poorly rendered world to get work done? You don't.
isn't the answer obvious? we are in search of hot alien pussy
Jay: You know, sometimes I wish I did a little more with my life instead of hanging out in front of places selling weed and shit. Like, maybe be an animal doctor. Why not me? I like seals and shit. Or maybe an astronaut. Yeah... be the first motherfucker to see a new galaxy, or find a new alien lifeform... and fuck it. People would be like, "There he goes. Homeboy fucked a martian once."
I live in Montana as well and the distances traveled are almost always too far to walk in a reasonable amount of time. And I'm not a big fan of trudging through the snow to goto the grocery store or to work. I'd be in a bad mood all day long if I had to put up with that.
Why can't more people be like you? Because it's quality of life thing. Having a car adds greatly to my quality of life. I do wish, however, that we had higher mileage standards in the US.
If you're really butthurt about spending 8 seconds holding the power button, there is a very clean and effective design that you might have heard of: The power cord.
Did you know that if you unplug it, the computer turns off instantly? I don't how they managed such a feat of engineering...

At this point, in fact, the bulk of us are starting to get pretty damn sick and tired of both those SUV-driving narcissistic fuckwits that we have to contend with on the way to work every day, and judgmental foreigners that insist upon treating America (of all countries) as a monolithic culture.
I am getting pretty sick and tired of being stereotyped as a fuckwit for driving an SUV. Maybe I want something that I can drive in the hills or I can haul things around if I need to. Do you ever need to move anything big? Does it fit in your Toyota Hybrid? No? Well, then you better go borrow your friend's SUV. But, you don't have any friends with SUVs because they are all fuckwits.
Next time, pick some other characteristic instead of owning an SUV, like ranting about SUV owning fuckwits.
> You need to move to afghanistan or iraq or something where you don't have to > worry about 'The State' giving you speeding tickets for BREAKING THE LAW.
Or Montana.
That is not the case as of 1999. The highway speed limit is now 75. Unfortunately, the law went into effect the year before I got my license, so I never got to take advantage of it.
But, even then, the "reasonable and prudent" limit only applied on the interstate, not on 2 lane highways and in town. There is also no evidence in the past 7 years that setting the speed limit at 75 has made the highways any safer. The death tolls are still the same as far as speed related accidents go. Drinking and driving on the other hand....
I don't think it is a wise decision to play jokes on these people. They are very serious about what they do. There have been at least 3 murders directly related to 419 scammers, see Wikipedia.
so, lets turn it round... doesn't this actually give people an incentive to STOP internet users in the USA who have VOIP from using the PSTN altogether, and encouraging their friends to sign up too?
Yes, absolutely it does. I for one, wouldn't miss the PSTN at all.
A VoIP call is just another internet connection between two individuals, sending data back and forth. What makes VoIP so special that it needs taxation? Are they going to tax internet video conferencing and Netmeeting next? Instant messaging? Just another example of old people in government not understanding the differences in new technology.
If you would have read TFA, you would have found out that they are only taxing calls made to the PSTN, not internet only calls. I don't have a problem with that. I do, however, have a problem with the rate discrepency between VoIP companies vs the Bells vs the cell companies. VoIP companies are paying double the amount the incumbents are paying based on an arbitrary percentage (a number not justified in any sort of way).
Oh also that fund that is supposed to "subsidize" rural areas is such a waste. My parents have lived in a rural area for years without DSL and it wasn't made available until a couple years ago. And then, it's 128kbps and it wasn't funded by this stupid fund, but by the local telephone co-op. I'd rather the tax go away.
The rural telephone co-ops in my area are heavily subsidized by Universal Service Funds. I am 99% certain that your DSL is funded by USF.
Pretty soon Jack Thompson and his thought police will link gaming with global warming. Not only is it destroying the kids, but it is destroying the very planet we live on!
On a different note, what about all the other appliances we have in our homes? The 20 year old refrigerators, ovens, furnaces, and air conditioners? What kind of excess power do those things consume? I'm sure there are a lot more than half a million of those units in the United States alone. While the article makes the point that the new generation of consoles require more electricity, it's nothing but a troll.
Any computer in the last two or three years requires at least 150W just to let Windows idle. Hell, I need a 550W supply for my machine to even turn on. Compared to the 160W an Xbox 360 running at 720p, the Xbox seems pretty efficient to me.
There is a fantastic story from 1995 in the New Yorker as told by the lead engineer of the Citigroup Center building. He talks about how one of his engineering students at Cambridge told him his math was wrong and his building would fail. He didn't believe him at first, but finally found his error. He decided to come forth with the fact that he screwed up, which could have ended his career. An excellent read.
I know it's April Fools, but this story is no joke.
I was on site fixing someone's DSL when the lady asked me if there was any solution to her problem.
What problems?, I ask.
All those cables that go into the computer box, she replies.
I tell her that wireless routers are available and that I could purchase one for her.
No, no, she tells me, I meant those big blacks ones that plug into the wall, they really limit my ability to move the computer around.
My jaw drops to the floor. I tell her that they haven't made much progress in the last few years on Wireless Power Cords, it's been a tough problem to crack.
I watch the wheels in her head turn and she tells me: Well, maybe in a few years they will have figured it out, just look at my cell phone, it doesn't have any wires.
Of course, I tell her, the best and the brightest are studying day and night.
Every time we get a story of the form "I hacked A to run on B" or "I hacked C to do E", somebody always asks whether it wouldn't be more cost effective to buy something off-the-shelf. The answer is almost always "yes". Even if the hacker is saving money on hardware, he's expending a lot of his well-paid time. But that just doesn't matter.
This is actually a reverse. The goal here seems to be: take a satistisfactory piece of hardware and make it run a hundred times worse.
Where do I get a 250-300 watt powersupply with 12 SATA power connectors?
Oh, I think you're gonna need a lot more than 300 watts. Double that at least.
I just built a system with 8 400GB drives and a Pentium 3. Started with a 400 watt supply and it wouldn't even turn on. Went an bought an Antec 550 and it turns on just fine, but acts a little flaky now and again. I definately need something in the 600-700 category.
There was a project I saw on the Internet just a bit ago, unforunately I can't remember where, but he had 12 SATA drives and ended up having to buy a 1KW supply. He had a 650 but it wouldn't even turn on. Although, if I remember right he was running dual Xeons, so that could skew the results a bit...
Regardless, you need something much bigger. You could get an additional supply just to power drives. Basically you just need to ground the green wire on an ATX supply to get it to turn on with a connection to a motherboard. http://www.gideontech.com/content/articles/196/1 This site will show you how.
I am less concerned about raw download speed than I am about consistency and reliability. My Comcast cable modem broadband link is less than what I would call consistent and reliable, much less.
These things are not mutually exclusive. A lot of ISPs can provide you with both.
The original question was: could you use more bandwidth? Consistency and reliability should be a given, so we will ignore that aspect. Of course we can use more bandwidth. I want to be downloading a new movie (legally of course) while talking on my voip phone and playing my Counterstrikes and World of Warcrafts. And I want to do that at the same time.
That requires bandwidth, and a lot of it to do it reliably.
I envy those in Tokyo with their Fiber to the Home at 100Mb+ service. We should have enough bandwidth at our disposal that we can transfer and stream any sort of media imaginable.
(And even then, we have to rule out contamination from Earth life.)
Perhaps Earth life is just "contamination" from another planet. We should probably just ignore it.
Part of the problem is SoundDomain is still charging fees for unsigned indie bands.
They really struck gold with that little trick.

That's telekinesis, Kyle.

Sun Offering Optimized AMP Stack On Solaris
If you combine the words Sun and Oferring you get "suffering".
Something to ponder.
