It may seem odd but I would say Godel Escher Bach. I can't really think of any other book that I would consider worth while reading at the start of my carear. (I am actually thinking of before my college education.)
I think it represents a conflict of interest when you are in-charge or the 'developing' nation. Especially when it has natural resources, or if you are primarily there to harvest a cash crop.
After watching the Youtube video on Google's venture in China I am 'slightly' inclined to disagree. It was stated that free was priority so they just bundled up the software which as much Malware/spyware that was necessary to pay for the software.
This _should_ be redundant, however you get the same effect with languages and actual special effort is need to understand it. For instance (IMHU) there was a particular tablet that was required to understand Ancient Egyptian.
IMHU = In my honest understanding.
Now imagine if ebay started using GPG/PGP on it's email and encouraging the masses to use and understand the technology. (Even at the "here take this plugin" level.)
* Plugin deletes ebay messages that don't match PGP/GPG.
When i browse on a 56k connection (always downloading) the pages load slowly (duh) there for i have more time to look at the already loaded images, For example banners usally load as one of the first thing so i do look at them. But the questions do i click....
To be fair.. A game written in a garage or not is still a cog of sorts of a larger system. :P
And proved it at the same time! :P
But.... Does it have enough traction?
Redhat -> Mandrake -> Knoppix -> Gentoo -> (Solaris) -> Ubuntu
Think of the items they sell as independent products that extend the game, and it works fine.
In places that I have worked so far. They have not.
Ah cool. Small world ... sorta. I guess.

Hey, mind if I ask you a zOS related question. My email is valid.

I think with greater exposure to poor quality writing that people would learn why it is bad. Then actually attempt to communicate better. :)
That seems to describe the Marketing place I am currently in too.
I agree with grandparent. Politics. Although it was probably brought about by constant nagging and put downs by us.
My opinion behind this is that in the US they try sell a Brand, ie The Simpsons. But I don't have an alternative model to apply to the Japanese.

Wouldn't the fact that the people who read and write about computer intelligence for the public are neither, be worse?
Actually a quick google (I had to shove on the year to get relevant content..) I found this: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000692.html which seems to backup the claim a little bit.
Perhaps try a shift in focus?
Just give them laptops and they will hibernate the computer every night in order to hide it from potential thieves, or to use it at home, ect.
