i know for sure that i have an ibm deskstar. and when i went to the computerstore they said that there is a lot of problems with ibm disks (ide atleast)
i used to run a store before, and then i had mostly problems with western digital caviar disks.
now i'm not sure whether there is just normal for disks to just die/have bad sectors, or if there is still some hope using samsung disks...
i know samsung bought a fab from conner. and i know i had some problems with those old conner disks.
i guess somebody should cover which fabs are producing what brands and how their reliability tests are performed. atleast i think it's a shame that ibm just have a bad word nowadays.
We tried this at work, but we used Windows 2000 servers. However we felt that it was very hard to make it work over firewalls, since so many ports are used (might be different in BSD). We ended up using own ip-segment for those servers without ipsec..
BAD
1. Filesharing sux. WinXP-WinXP sharing almost always fail. I do not understand why.
2. GUI can be buggy at taskbar sometimes.
(3. Default skin uses too much space.)
4. The control panel just has TOO many buttons to click. Too user-friendly.
GOOD
1. I like it.
2. It has many nice features that makes general use more logical.
3. It's very good to remote control (terminal services included even in winxp pro).
4. All my games work.
I cannot understand why people talk about WinVNC, Proxy, PcAnywhere etc. Just use the included NetMeeting and enable Remote Desktop. I have it on all my servers and it's fast enough for me. Everywhere I go computers have NetMeeting installed (included in Windows) so you can call the servers. NetMeeting have encryption and uses normal NT accounts for users/password (or Active Directory/domain admins).
Believe me! I've tried them all! (winvnc, tightvnc...)
BTW: Don't forget to lower your colors (256color desktop. it's faster).
It's not time for backwards compatibility yet! I prefer looking at the computer innovations since 1980 and drawing parallells to the innovations of the car. Everything is similar whitin engine sizes and stuff, however the computer engine has improved like 100% every 3 years. Thats why it's no time for backwards compatibility yet!
It's like we should still support the first T-Ford, allowing cars who run at 10mps on our highways.
I laugh when Linux people try sending fancy mail with just text-characters (no html fonts and no including of images within text to explain figures etc). Ok ok ok I like outlook:) (and i DO NOT care about viruses, they have never destroyed anything in my life)
Wait another 5 years before talking about backwards compatibility!
There has been similar problems almost at every place where SEARCH INFORMATION IS NOT LOGGED. There has to be some system detecting who's making a search request, and there has to be an agency of some kind monitoring these requests.
I cannot see a single reason why not a x-box emulator might pop up within one year after release. The hardware is almost identical. in general, this might boost the complexity in games on Windows platforms, and I am sure that people will crack down whatever x-box security Micros~1 have installed on their CD_ROMs.
In a Galaxy Far Far Away...
Princess Leia used a Mini Disc drive and had her hair dried while she copied a dozen files onto her Mini Disc. She was quite happy witht the computer developers agreeing to use the Mini Disc standard.
;) Ofcoz this is not the reality. Making new standards is so hard nowadays, I guess only Microsoft is up to the job. Of corse, Sony thought it was suicidal to invest in an unsecure market that allready went for zipdrives and CD-R's.
I might say EFnet is the biggest network around, where it's normal to use netsplits and similar. If you want to keep a channel, you have to add bots (robots just idling to keep channels and which have userbases of channel users). Some might say this suck, but I say it's really making EFnet dynamic, and more like places in the real world. You need power to keep places, and it's hard to keep your name.
However, if somebody get to your UIN (your idea) they might harass you and you might get to a point where you have to grab a new UIN to have peace. This is not what the IRC should be about, and some users really needs the privacy and relaxement of chatting on IRC.
Making a UIN "layer" makes it hard to chat in channels, if several users have similar nicks. You better try making IRC even more dynamic, introducing random earthquakes (netsplits), and hazardous storms like in the real world.
If you read slashdot every day like I do, I guess you could say we sit by our PC every day. However, it would be nice, once a while, to check if my chair has moved some degrees north or west...
It's easy to say if a specific programmer is an artist or not. If the program behaves intuitive, he is an artist. At the same time, the material must be original, or else it would not be called artistic.
I believe that because of AMD and Intel's increased frequency of releases, the companies loose a lot of money because of they sometimes have to cancel public releases like this. In the end, the end-user must pay for this, thus increasing CPU prices.
This is not healthy. Another view is that this race might lower the quality of chips, just like Intel's drawback recently.
So listen to my words, Intel and AMD! Sit back in your chairs and relax. Have a cup of coffee..:-)

It also depends on filesystem and partition size
e.g. an 4GB FAT32 partition will outperform a 20GB NTFS partition on the same type of disk.
It can be emulated very easily, but no emulater (atleast as I've heard of) are out yet. Be sure to buy that 2.2 ghz :p

It's not about security.
It's about functionality.
The people chose functionality,
so Microsoft gave them that.

Would be cool if it could have physical switches who moved on/off. :-)

I run Micros~1 programs
I'm very happy
I'm very happy
'Coz I know when there is a patch out
even in my Local Newspaper
You know announcing all this Microsoft patches news is actually making people trust Microsoft. Coz you will be noted when to upgrade.
I bet you wouldn't post some news every time they find a security hole in MySQL.
Nowadays we use glFTPd (www.glftpd.com) (freeware). It has message and oneliner etc support. Also, it has an excellent way of requesting files etc.

Use HTML or something you ppl!
Slogan: Stop nVidia from blocking 3dfx completely!
This information is just too powerful.
How come newspapers can legally earn money, publishing news that IS originally ment to be free?
As you see of this text, I want PS2 to play DivX.
This is a subliminal line. When you read this you feel like playing DivX on PS2.
All i say: Do not underestimate the power of a 10mbit hub It's the best way of handling traffic load, and it's REALLY cheap nowadays.

Im impressed with hemos running windows.

This is only a media hype. I guess everybody wanna buy a paper with this headline ;)
This is not an image format, but a new PDF format.
