I'm sure the Koreans will just start working for Kia instead.
BTW- An employee of Toyota told me this several years ago (don't know if it is still true):
The #1 importer of cars into the US: General Motors.
The #1 exporter of cars out of the US: Toyota.
Apparantly Toyota makes more of their cars in America than GM and the American companies do....... off topic- but hopefull I won't get modded down for that aside.... I think it is interesting (and no not bashing the big 3).
CFLs do contain trace amounts of mercury- but the extra power needed to be generated to power an incandescent bulb results in multiple times more mercury emissions from power generation than exists inside a CFL.
So less mercury is put into the atmosphere by using CFLs than Incandescents (at least if you get any of your power from fossil fuels).
No it doesn't. Scientific study after scientific study has proven it doesn't.
Even the first doctor who said there was a link has admitted he faked his data for monetary gain from a lawsuit.
Unfortunately some people still hold onto this old belief- just like people still believe sugar makes kids get hyper... which has been proven not to be true (blood sugar is regulated unless you have diabetes or other such disease).
It's an old wives tale nothing more. Vaccines do not cause autism.
The problem is climate change. The problem is that economies need to adapt. The haves and havenots of water will change.
Water is a necessity- so if you're somewhere that is going to get less- you need to build pipes NOW- rather than when the area is in drought.
If you're used to growing barley- but now you're getting less rain and too much heat- your local farmers are going to go broke unless they adapt- buy the equipment needed to harvest maize (before they run out of money trying to grow barley and they can't anymore).
If you're a coastal city- you need to prepare for flooding- before you flood- as the risks are higher now.
If you're an inland city with extra rain coming from storms now- you need to improve sewage removal BEFORE you flood.
Climate change can bring in lots of problems... as long as people deny the problems instead of adapt for them it's going to bite them in the butt.
Adapt before the problem gets out of hand- not afterwards.
That is the problem- for political reasons some people are pretending it isn't happening.
Whereas I would agree with your statements if there were any proof of aliens. Currently we only have coincidental evidence and Richard Simmons.
Proof of global warming is much more prolific. We know that climate is changing- we don't know if there is a scientific explanation for Richard Simmons.
Warming HAS been proven many times over by many groups- private and public. The difference this time is that it was paid for by deniers who wanted to prove that it wasn't happening.
You're right though- day by day weather temperatures are unimportant. The problem is that the temperature on the planet as an average has gone up 1C. (some places like the poles have gone up by more than that- whereas at the equator temperature hasn't increased by as much).
Regardless of WHO or WHAT caused the raise in temperature- it is important that people understand that it does make a significant difference. Weather patterns will change. Economies will change because water availability will alter- as will what plants will grow where.
Some cities will be prone to flooding (not just coastal, but from rain).
If people deny the change is happening- cities won't prepare themselves adequately. Regardless of whether man causes the problem- man has to prepare to deal with the problem.
Regardless of who causes global warming, humans, spagetti monsters, natural fluctuation- it is important to acknoweldge that it is real.
Why? Because- if it continues we are in for some problems.
Sea-levels rising, weather patterns changing, extinctions, crop growing suitability changing, disease from mosquitos species spreading north.
Stopping global warming (if caused by man) is only one side of the coin- the other side is WE NEED TO PREPARE because there is no reason for anyone to believe it is going to stop anytime soon.
So, we need to start thinking about- how to we stop coastal cities from flooding costing us billions every year. We need to think about how changing economies in local regions will change. If Nebraska is no longer capable of growing maize- how will that affect the economy there?
Lots of cities are already seeing increased flooding because they can't handle the increased rainfall they get as weather patterns change.
Chicago is smart- they're upgrading their sewers with an increase in heavy storms expected so they won't retroactively be dealing with floods.
I don't care if you think man is not responsible- if you're republican or democrat- spreading denial of climate change is dangerous. We need our elected officials to take the threat seriously and prepare for the changes BEFORE they happen.
I don't want to sensationalise or be a scare-monger... we don't need to run into the streets screaming- but we do need to calmly, on a local by local basis sit down and analyse- what will climate change mean for my community and what needs to be done about it. Do we need to build flood walls, prepare the economy for a new agriculture (or loss of it)?
We can adapt to a changing climate- but we need to take it seriously and act now- rather than wait until it is too late.
A real important thing to note was that this was paid for privately- with a large chunk of that capital coming from Climate-change-deniers who wanted to prove that climate change wasn't happening.
Climate-change-deniers often say that government paid studies are fake because governments are encouraging the scientists to come back with fake positives to promote various policies...... they can't say that anymore.
The debate of man's involvement will still go on- but STOP DENYING THE PROBLEM! Let's put that to bed now.
Well NASA's goals for the rovers were to pave the way for manned voyages.
We're not ready to send a man to mars yet- so until then robots all the way.
Just like the original space program developed all sorts of new technologies- I have absolutely no doubt that sending a man to Mars will do the same thing.
From insulation, to medicine, to power supplies, to nutrition- there are no end of fields that could benefit from sending a man to mars because we will have to solve various problems.
There will be pay-offs we can't predict now, just like there was from the moon landing.
That said- I fully back the martian rovers they were a brilliant success.
Until I got my kindle- I used the library all the time!
I use my kindle and download free books all the time (I use gutenburg instead of amazon- even if amazon has it for free).
The main problem with the library is that I don't always have time to read books- and frequently ran out of time to read a book- and renewing is such a hassle.
Whereas, reading the free books means I'm limited to older books- there are tonnes of older books I've always wanted to read that I never got around to... so I'm still reading books I always wanted to.
I want to award a +1 funny to whoever moderated it as a +1 informative.
As to the original poster of the "first post" comment- completely useless- I'm glad a moderator had a sense of humour about it though- made me chuckle.
Apart from absurdly outliving all lifetime expectations, I haven't heard of any revolutionary news from the rovers.
Plenty of good things came out of the rover missions that can be used for the future.
1) Prooved that the air-breaking into the Martian atmosphere (considered risky due to the low atmosphere there) works- and can be used for future missions.
2) Increased evidence for a liquid presence beneath the surface. (yes, we suspected- but these things are incremental- now we're almost certain).
3) Great concept proven that we can send these rovers over space and it works. Again, to be built upon in future missions.
4) Photographs from the surface of Mars! From the surface from moveable buggies... how can you not consider that absolutely cool!
5) Increased evidence that there may have been, and may still be life on mars from chemical signatures sniffed. We keep getting more and more coincidental evidence from various sources- rovers added to this.
The rover missions have been an overwhelming success. Not just for now- but as concepts for future missions.
Oooooh... or the Bachelorette- where she has to pick from dictators.
Well... I....errrrm, like, ummm... thing Fidel is kinda hot, like, ummm, yeah, he's kind of old, right... but... ummm that beard tickles me a lot...and like you know... in a good way...
But Gaddafi, like, he soooo dreamy, ummm... like err, that moustache... yeah... um... like I love them both... they so nice to me... they only kill people that like deserve it... give them a break people........ I ummmm... like, so not going to give Robert Mugabe a rose, he ummm won't even let me keep my farm.
Damn, and I was hoping for a Gaddafi reality TV show.
How cool would that have been to see him and some courtesan bad mouthing each other in front of hidden cameras and then acting all smoochy with each other afterwards.
Guess no chance of having an "I'm a dictator, get me out of here" reality show. Can you imagine Gaddafi, Saddam, Kim Jong Il and Amadinejad on a desert island together? Which one would be voted off first.......ooops silly me, voting is for democracy.
Interesting- thank you for the correction. I guess I wasn't aware of the true meaning of "sentient" , in its common usage it is [incorrectly] used as "sapient" is defined.
Technically though, I'm not sure that I'd agree that most life is sentient. Most "animal" life perhaps. Plants, bacteria, archaea, and fungi could not be considered sentient and they outnumber animals.
Perhaps this is where SETI should be looking for life.
Not on the planet- but observing the planet.
Planet formation is bound to attract the interest of sentient life. Wouldn't be too unexpected if nearby there is sentient life that they have seen it too and have sent a probe.
If we had the technology- I bet we would send a probe there... so other sentient life might too.
Of course- if that probe is communicating back to the home-world, chances are any signal it sends back won't be pointing in our direction so we may not be able to intercept the communication anyway.
Imagine being able to legally work on producing the software to do this. Not just legally- but with the backing of the government.... no, I do not condone it...... but it would be fascinating to work on.:)
Interesting article- it certainly suggests to me that Nokia, Kodak and Apple are the most letigious and therefore the ones to avoid the most (at least as of a year ago- if decision was to punnish the letigious companies).
I will have to look for the more up-to-date version myself.
I'm sure the Koreans will just start working for Kia instead.

Would be counter-productive if so.

You haven't met my Rush Limbaugh disciple in-laws!
He is frequently commanding them not to believe in climate change that it isn't really happening.
A real important thing to note was that this was paid for privately- with a large chunk of that capital coming from Climate-change-deniers who wanted to prove that climate change wasn't happening.

It is "PURSUIT of happiness"; not "HAPPINESS".
There is a difference. You have a right to pursue being happy. Government is not going to protect your right to be happy.
The two are more different than they appear at first glance.
Got you beat.
33 and never seen it. :P

I, for one, am happy for Mr. Hammer's entrepreneurial pursuit.
I wish other rappers could follow suit.
Eminiem, for example, could build a search engine based on white-listed entries.
Tupac could group similar sites into gangs- perhaps have a specialised search engine that shoots results out for law enforcement officials.

I think Hollywood will be more concerned about her being a litigious Bee-Itch than her age.
If she is talented enough age doesn't matter. There are plenty of roles for older actressess.
We have the ability to send craft out of the solar system now.
We could probably send a manned craft out of the solar system too... ... getting them back [and alive] may be a little bit more of a challenge however.
There was an article last week about some anime "love-girl" robot that was being created.
How long until Siri is implemented on that? Y'know, so you can give it commands... just like a real girl.
Imagine being able to legally work on producing the software to do this. Not just legally- but with the backing of the government. ... no, I do not condone it... ... but it would be fascinating to work on. :)
